I think what really got me upset about Sindel was that iconic imagery of her hugging Kitana in the old games when she got to redeem herself seems nearly completely replicated in Mk11 Aftermath when they hug again. Even Jade is there for that moment. It felt so good as a fan of the older titles seeing Sindel hold Kitana again. Only for it to be a "Haaa gotcha moment"

I think you forgot one of the funniest things in MK11: They retconned their own retcon. Originally, Shao Kahn killed Jerrod, but then it was revealed D’Vorah killed him for Shao Kahn, then Sindel told Kitana she killed Jerrod. So did all three of them decided to bang Jerrod to death?

She went from a Kind and Heroic Queen to her people and loving mother to her only child to a sadistic and demented narcisist with no love for her daughter and willing to murder her , enamoured with the man who invaded her realm , killed her husband and forced her to marry him , sexually harassing and enslaving people and just overall murdering innocents . What I think pissed people off more about the Sindel change, at least those that know, is that when they were showing off her gameplay way back when, Netherealm stated in the stream that they thought the Evil witch look she had, didn't mesh well with the good natured mother at heart that Sindel was. So, they wanted to change that, and they stuck with her looks because of course it made sense that she should be evil. For me, and I think many others, OG Sindel showed the true power of a mothers love. She fought as hard as she could to help her daughter. We could've had that here. Hell, she could've even adopted Mileena, telling her that while she's not Kitana's twin, she can at least guide the woman to find herself.

I remember a particular developer talking in the Sindel reveal stream about how she did all these nice things and physically looked evil the whole time and it didn't make sense to them why she was not evil. Hence the retcon was one of their proudest developments for the character in this game. So I just may single handedly blame that developer for the retcon 🤔

Sindel has always been my fav MK char, and man, I can tell you I was really disappointed with what they did to her, and I was initially so excited that she'd finally return. When the whole Sindel retcon thing got leaked, nobody was happy about it. And it made no sense either. What was it supposed to change? She was already an incredibly strong and well written character, much better done than a ton of females in gaming. And then someone goes "OK what if she was secretly super evil the whole time?" like they wanted to do it purely for shock value. Or maybe they went "what if she's evil like in the movie?" but no one even likes Annihilation enough to want it that way. So why?

One of the things that bugs me about Sindel's retcon is that I've had people argue with me that because Sindel has always been evil in the games, that it just makes more sense to retcon her as evil because she's never been shown as a good guy except for her endings. Which is bullshit because Scorpion's very rarely been shown to be Hanzo Hasashi, yet MK9 successfully brought him to life and inspired a brand new path for the character to take. There's no way they couldn't have finally given us non-brainwashed Sindel.

Kotal and Jade being in love with each other is the one good thing that happens to Kotal in the whole story mode of either game.

I was a casual fan of MK, Sindel was one of my favorites female characters. What NRS did to her in MK11... Now Sindel is one of the few waifus I actually HATE Before, she was a good example of never judge a book by its cover. Despite her sexy dark queen appearance , she was actually a heroine. That made her unique and I wish more female characters were like that. The fact that they made her evil becuase of her appearance was nothing but awful 🤕

Yeah, the Sindel retcon is pretty bad, especially since Shao Kahn was apparently so awful she killed herself and now they're just a power couple. I mainly play as Kabal, and his retcon kinda makes no sense. It implies he was Black Dragon during MK3's events rather than a cop. If that was the case, how did he die? Geras even says Kabal is "one of Raiden's victims", which implies he still does work with the heroes against Shao Kahn's invasion. Also pre-burned Kabal had super speed somehow.

Sindel was a martyr, she sacrificed herself to protect the realms, but always regretful she left her daughter behind. Yet, she understood what she had to do to protect everyone. She knew Shao Kahn would become too powerful to stop from conquering the other realms once he took Earthrealm. If anything, I would have loved to see the writers explore the original Sindel, the queen of Edenia being debriefed of the current events. Seeing her reaction at how everything turned out. Having to ally with Shang Tsung who she has history with of many years (even having Sindel say she witnessed Goro killing the Great Kung Lao and that event was the turning point for her decision, man a wasted opportunity). If she is angry, let her be angry towards Raiden, and she would be right: her sacrifice stopped Shao Kahn for thousands of years, instead the "He must win" thing did not work for him. Her sacrifice was for nothing in MK9. Something that was not mention in MK9, but it was clear in MK3 in 1995: for Shao Kahn to be "allowed" to invade Earth, he needed Sindel to be resurrected in Earthrealm (Hence Shang Tsung, of Earthrealm Origin was the one who resurrected her, not Quan Chi), then Shao Kahn would be allowed to open the portals to claim her queen in Earth. Now, this could have been under the context that his queen's body was stolen by Earthrealmers or by the Black Dragon, I dont know, but something like that could have been used still during MK11 story mode. I mention this since it is MK2 Shao Kahn the one we see in the time merger and onwards. Let Shao Kahn try that again with Shang Tsung instead of Quan Chi. Thus we come full circle, having Sindel gain the knowledge of the events in MK3, she could have pretended to serve Shao Kahn, but then in the end absorb Shang Tsung like in MK9 but this time instead of killing the full cast, she could have gone against Shao Kahn and Kronica herself. That could have been her own ending honestly.

Out of all that was mentioned Sindel's changed is what pissed me off the most. Kabal on the other hand didn't really piss me off that much because in the original timeline he was in the Black Dragon but around MK3 he left but then in Deception rejoined the Black Dragon along with Kira and Kobra and fought with the evil side during Armageddon.

And her actual loyalty to Shao Kahn isn't out of fear it's because he actually gave her a chance at life. They could have saved Sindel in this. All they had to do was give her and Kitana one final dialogue before their fight, after Sindel spoke of how Kitana's father died. Sindel admits to lying about Jared's death and using Shao Kahn to get to the Hourglass, just to kill Kahn in the end and use the Hourglass to restore Edenia once again. Thus, they needed to continue their deception and Kitana needed to give her mother the win for the plan to work. THAT'S IT! Sindel saved and fans kept

As a Sindel main since mk3 I was always invested in the lore surrounding the character. And I'm pretty fanatic to mk since I was a child, so to think that a character that is argueably my favorite character in any media was denied of her rich story only to fit mk11's narrative is extremely dissapointing to me. If someone asks me, that is a case of taking away what was already well defined instead of improving upon what we already had.

Also the disgusting choice to make Skarlet desire her own father. She even calls herself a daughter of Shao Khan; makes me sick.

What I hate the most about Sindel's retcon is what it does to Kitana. She's my top favorite character in the series and what they did to her because of her mother's retcon was so fucking dirty. Correct me if I'm wrong: I think Aftermath was the first ever instance we've gotten insight into how she feels about her mother abandoning her and, very surprisingly, it has great depth and nuance in her reaction. She shows considerable vulnerability and numerous emotions to her mother from shock, apprehension, hurt, a sense of betrayal, relief/acceptance and joy just to have her mother back in her life. Very realistic portrayal that practically anyone who has ever felt/actually been abandoned by their parents can relate to. It could have also expanded Sindel's arc and fleshed out her character more if they kept her suicide purely as a selfish means to escape Shao Kahn instead of the noble sacrifice used to protect Earthrealm since she'll have to work even harder for her redemption should Kitana remain wary of fully letting her back into her life (but, the noble sacrifice could still work as a redemption arc since she *did* still abandon her child to the ruthless Emperor). Honestly, I don't think I can sufficiently put into words just how great that writing is...... But, it's not bogged down by everything that happened afterwards but in the very scene itself since you can just tell Sindel is obviously feigning affection for her daughter with how forced it all is. Then they proceed to have Sindel shack up with abd work with the man who *led her to suicide in the first place* (retconned to having been assassinated by Quan Chi) to depose her daughter (who completed her arc by blinding the man who made her family suffer so much and becoming Queen of Outworld to reform it) and beat her within an inch of her life. I think this whole mess of Sindel and Kitana is truly emblamatic of NRS' writing: when it's good, it's surprisingly really good but not only is it few and far between, it's bogged down by everything else NRS decided.

Nothing goes with this Sindel, her eyes, her story nothing too denaturalized the character, also with Skarlet Story Certainly the character was getting closer to Mileena but hey we had integrated this image of her but in the 11 they changed everything from her origins to her style of Kombat. She went from dreadful assassin to frightened mage... Also with Jade Cloothes I didn't understand his main colors, and his bo one, I think they did that just for one scene,the one where she raises the dead, a bit like Mileena's mouth I think of the fact that she had lips in X just for one scene: her kiss with D'vorah. I just hope that we will return to another continuum for the 12

What makes it the worst of all the retcons in my eyes is how much NRS having been trying to hard lean into to the women empowerment thing. *_To be clear, the empowerment isn't the issue,_* it's just that the one person with an established tragic backstory of being an abuse victim that gave her life for the good of others, eventually being able to rise above her hardship being turned into a power-hungry witch stereotype in the same game that Jade gets this massive upgrade in her independence just feels like the whole effort was disingenuous for the sake of headlines while butchering what could have been. It just sucks

As far as I can tell, sindel dying to put protective speel around earth was a mk9 addition. In mk3 Shao Kahn had her specifically brought back on earth so that he could travel there and reclaim his bride. Which would technically fall within line of old mk's rules about realm invasion.

I wanted to add something to your Sindel part. How OG Sindel was actually freed from the brainwashed state. While the others were fighting Shao Kahn's extermination squads, Kitana eventually meets up with her. Kitana tries to convice her mother about the truth, but they end up fighting and Kitana gets knocked out by Sindel. Jade eventually shows up and sees Kitana. As she assumes that her friend is dead, Jade accuses Sindel for murdering her own daughter. Jade's words eventually found it's way into Sindel's heart and she started to remember everything about her past. After that, Kitana regains consciousness and after their reunion, Kitana explains everything that happened after her suicide. And then, Sindel decides that she joins the heroes. I hope this will ease up some confusion. 😄 And for the record, her retcon is straight BS. She did NOT deserved this... 😭

Mortal Kombat's lore is all over the place. They're always contradicting the plots and storyline. Skarlet in MK9 was actually a former assassin for Quan Chi. They can never make up their minds with how they want to keep Sindel good or evil. Sindel's story is full of contradictory themes. I think NRS should have kept her the heroic Queen she was redeemed as back in MK Deception.

My view over the retcons and changes in development in the reboot of MK: Kotal Kahn and Jade: Pretty unneccesary, though it could work if there relationship was mention in MK9 Nightwolf: It was ok Fujin: One of the few characters to have good development Sheeva: Ok but it felt forced. Rain: it could have good potential Kung Lao: Wasted Potential and literally a punching bag Skarlet: unnecessary backstory change due to confusion Erron Black: He was better in MKX Baraka: Surprisingly good Sindel: No comment, just easily the worst retcon of all time

NRS deserve every bit of hate they get for the sindel change as it actually takes away from the character and adds absolutely nothing. Then the out of game reason for the change was beyond stupid as they basically said just because she looked evil that mean she is evil. So remember people judge everyone person you meet just by looks. I also hate the jade and kotal kahn romance as it feels so random, theres zero chemistry and it goes nowhere.

I like to imagine that because she died with Quan Chi's charm still on her, and was subsequently made into a revenant for less than 30 years, then it twisted and altered her memories and personality to what they are when she's resurrected by the Trio in Aftermath. Shao Kahn is simply playing along with it ('cause he's a manipulative S.O.B.), and perhaps Shang Tsung had some knowledge of such charms already, and had already suspected that the years of being a revenant may have augmented the charm's impact on her psyche.

I think you can give Sindel resentment against Jerrod for letting this happen and a have her develop a hunger for power in response to her trauma without... all this.

The Skarlet retcon is okay with me, just wished there were more moments with her and Shao Kahn or explained a few more things like "she was an orphan but after being bound to the blood code she became someone new, her sustainability requires her to consume blood or else she goes on a violent hunger pang attack". Jade and Kotal, I don't mind either way but I like the relationship blooming naturally overtime. As for Sindel, technically she was resurrected by Quan Chi and he did say she would be more cooperative so there are shenanigans based on the wording. It's still a really bad decision no matter how you look at it; the more complex approach would be if Shang Tsung deliberately revived her revenant with her evil mindset intact/his past soul still infused with her, corrupting her psyche permanently and denying the retribution she had from Deception.

May NetherRealm Studios bring the MKD Sindel's persona (I'm talking about Good Sindel) back for Mortal Kombat 12 and future Mortal Kombat games. Her retconed persona is an insult and a spit to the entire Mortal Kombat and Sindel's fans (including me) and I will never ever forgive the writters for doing that. I wish them getting fired and disappeared from Mortal Kombat team and NRS forever

NRS made a big mistake by making Jade take back Kotal after she saw him try to slaughter innocent Tarkatan's including children in the war camp. Simply because they were a race that tried to overthrow him during the civil war. Kung Lao did many good things for her, especially go against Raiden to help her free Kitana from Shao Kahn's tower. And in MK11, Kung Lao was the one who helped Jade to walk out of the tent after Skarlet's attack to drain her of her blood. That's why I think Kung lao is much better than Kotal for Jade. And as a fan of Sindel I am very disappointed about this new villain version of her, she should have helped Kitana 100%

Bro I still remember finding out in the Aftermath about the betrayal. I was crying when the hug happened but I was heartbroken when I found out she was actually evil. Sindel as a good character would have been so dope since she is so strong

I don't mind orphan Skarlet personally, but there's a big disconnect between Skarlet's ending and her interactions with Shao Khan in-game. In her interactions, she seems incredibly grateful and loyal to him. She even sounds possessive of him so, making her hate him in her story doesn't make much sense.

I feel somewhat deprived by the fact that I never played any classic Mortal Kombat games beyond MK2... Sindel sounds a LOT more interesting in that original timeline and seeing her and Shao Kahn together in MK11 Aftermath was nauseating... even before I knew about how she was in the original timeline.

Thank you for addressing the elephant in the room. Sindel was my favorite hero. Her story was so full of suffering and her look always reminded me of Storm from the X-Men. The best Sindel story was in MK: Legacy. She was well presented in that story.

I don't think that the writers want to remove the nuances from the characters for the sake of not confusing the players. I believe that they might have just given up entirely since they knew everything was getting reckoned again and just dropped the ball, after all, it's not like anything that happened in any of the other games matters any more in the new timeline.

When they did the live showcases showing the new dlc characters the girl who is always there basically said sindel always looked evil to me so i dont know why shes mainly on the good side so since she looks bad we made her a full on bad guy in this game that was the reason behind the stupid change completely ruining the character in my opinion

I haven't played an mk since Armageddon, but have tried to keep up with future lore and Sindels changes will always leave me scratching my head.

Don't get me wrong i still love MK11 for the gameplay,how the characters look,the fatalities and in some context the story mode despite it being somewhat horendous its still enjoyable to watch. However the retcons is what brings this game down alot. I can "somewhat" forgive for some retcons: Skarlet being an orphan & Jade being romanticly involve with Kotal (I mean those 2 make a nice couple to be honest). But the 1 for Sindel is where i draw the line, bringing her back and having to believe she was actually a bad guy this whole time is by far the most stupiest retcon ever after watching the 2nd part of the story mode. And speaking of which something has brought up to my attention, as Underdawg stated Shang Tsung in MK3 was the one to revive Sindel and brainwash her , but whereas in the reboot of MK9 Quan Chi was the one to revive her and i noticed in the story mode that's all he did, he did'nt even try to mind controlled her. But you maybe saying 'well he did that by reviving her' and you could be right! However when revived Sindel wasnt a revenant and she immediatly knew she's Shao Khan's husband whereas later we see Quan Chi revived the good guys as revenants and was brainwashed. Honestly, I didn’t know anything about Sindel’s lore and even then, the way they handled her character in mk11 just made me feel so uneasy. It’s a shame that they ruined such an interesting character for the sake of aesthetics

About Erron's backstory being retconned, I don't think they removed the part about him not aging, I think they might have even added to it. In an intro dialogue between Errin and Skarlet, Skarlet asks Erron if Kotal knows "what he is" and Erron replies with "he knows I fight for the thrill of it" and the interaction ends with her saying "he should pray you don't get bored" so I think they might have been hinting to something more.
