I realize if you do a finger stroke, down-bow will be done by straightening the fingers; up-bow will be done by curling the fingers. However, if you do a wrist and elbow stroke incorporating finger movements, you'll have to keep the fingers curled in the down-bow but keep the fingers straightened in the up-bow; which is the exact opposite to finger stroke.
@minkymandy6065

Yes this is what confuses me right now. I am a beginner. For 'smooth bowing' at the tip, the fingers are curled to bring the bow downwards. And yet the opposite is true of the finger strokes here. What confused me all the more was that I watched another tutor's video on finger strokes (not colle) where she she curled her fingers for the down-stroke but then did the exact opposite in her next demonstration.

Great lesson, Joy! Finger control is very tough on my old hands, but at least now I know why I can't get the beautiful bow sounds that I long for. Thanks for sharing this technique!

Hi Joy, I have learned so much from watching your KZfaq videos. I am a teacher and in light of the situation I have recently been teaching music on Skype. I see that teaching this way I can get to teach more students in a smarter way instead of always traveling to students. I was hoping that you could give me some instructions on how to create a teaching presence on line.

I am so frustrated with Collé Bowing. I have the strength and flexibility to bend my finger joints with the bow in my hand, even without a Violin that takes off weight. My biggest probleme ist simply the application. I am trying to integrate this movement into every Bow stroke change but no matter what I am doing, the sound sounds the same like I would do it without bending my joints. Do you have any advices for me? I'd be so grateful
@JoyLeeViolin

Dear LH, you are not alone with this challenge. Our muscles need time to adopt and master the motion. I hope you can continue training your left hand. Because little by little it will get better. Happy violin practising!

Hi The basic bow hold is to have the thumb in the little space between the poucette.. But many violonist hold the bow upper.. So where is the place of the thumb?
@kim-dandoan1058
@kim-dandoan1058 4 жыл бұрын
I believe that is the Russian bow hold. Your grip depends on how you've been trained but the thumb should be above the ferrule.

Hi Joel, the right thumb should be placed in a relaxed way and curved near the middle and ring finger. If the thumb is sitting in between the frog and the leather, it's good. Happy violin playing!
@lh3556
@lh3556 4 жыл бұрын
At the beginning of playing the violin I also had my thumb between the frog and the thumb leather like in that corner. Nowadays I moved my thumb on the thumb leather because it gives me a more relaxed and smooth bow grip. I guess it depends on your own comfort and bow control

When we are new to any new techniques including tilted bow, it's normal to feel a bit tense. However try to take many small breaks and see if you could do it with a gentler grip of RH. Happy practising Jake!
