I think it's also important to note that Chris' move was less "I need a flashy move to impress the jury" and more "I can NOT sit next to Rick Devens". The one thing that Chris had that Dom didn't when he was in a similar position was information. He lived with the jury so he knew their perceptions of the remaining players. I'm guessing he probably had a good idea that Julie couldn't win because she was seen as a follower, Gavin likely could get some votes but not enough to win because he was likable yet a bit cowardly, and Rick would win hands down if he was in the final. That's deadly information because it's basically a sure thing without much guesswork on Chris' part. I give him a ton of credit for playing the cards he was dealt and going all in. Although I'd be even more impressed if I saw the same sort of move play out on a more traditional season where the person pulling it off isn't 100% sure that they're in a fire or bust position.

Well put. I hadn’t thought of that before. I still think it’s one of the worst seasons ever, because he got voted out so early (3rd was it...?) and then comes back to win it.

I love the season, but that move is overrated. It was obvious, otherwise you throw out your whole game.

I mean the idea actually came from Wardog while they were on the edge. The jury had come to an agreement that whoever was put back into the game would have to 1. Make an impressive idol play (I think?) and 2. Be directly responsible for Devins' elimination. So even if he wasn't sitting next to Devins, if he hadnt been directly responsible for his boot Chris wouldn't have won. I do think this kinda cheapens the move tho as it wasn't even really Chris' idea

I'm one of the few who think of Jenna's move as a savvy defensive move. As long as she knew Rob was being honest about wanting to face her in the final 2, ensuring Heidi was safe kept some of her options open once Christy was voted out. Rob was playing real well but you could kind of see in his eyes that this move caught him off guard. This was long before the "live tribal council" era, so really sticking with the plan was his only choice. Anyways, great content as always.
@Micelanius12
@Micelanius12 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, ensuring Heidi's safety for a round more ended up being what she needed to turn the game around later on. And ensuring that it was Christie out gives her an extra ally at final 5 anyway. Not that it ended up being useful, granted, but is still a better potential position. The only way it could have backfired (besides being wrong about Rob's intentions) would have been if Heidi won final 5 immunity.

@craigresendes2403
@craigresendes2403 4 жыл бұрын
Easy_Nator_Gamer I absolutely agree that Vecepia’s gameplay wouldn’t win in a modern season; however, her last two episodes were absolutely ingenious. I think it’s the first time a winner truly set themselves up so perfectly to win. Vee could never beat Kathy or Paschal, but she also knew that Neleh was dead in the water against any of them. She made an alliance with Kathy to counter Neleh and Paschal, which worked out in her favor (there was a 2/3 chance one of Neleh or Paschal goes in the rock draw, which ended up happening). She then only needed to outlast Kathy in the next challenge, because Neleh would never take Kathy to the Final 2 either. Very similar to Richard Hatch but a second layer because Vee convinced Neleh AT THE CHALLENGE to vote Kathy off. With the fire making Final 4 this strategy wouldn’t work in the same way, but at the time it was genius.

I know it’s not survivor season but when it is I really want to see a video on players who have had a major impact on the way the game is played. The first two that come to mind are Richard Hatch who showed us how to play the game in the first place and second Russell Hantz who I believe started the trend of looking for and finding idols without clues. If you pick neither that would be fine but something along those lines.

Another ingenious move was in Survivor Africa, when Ethan Zohn did what Richard Hatch did in season 1 in the final 3. Ethan dropped out knowing that Lex was the biggest threat to win and couldn't cut him because he would lose Lex's jury vote and potentially losing Tom's jury vote as well. Basically the same logic as Rich in season 1 were Lex was like Rudy and Kim Johnson was like Kelly

It’s clear from watching post game interviews that Chris had an advantage no one ever has had before in the game. He was allowed to literally plan out an ideal path to the finals WITH the jury, Chris knew exactly what the jury wanted him to do in order to win the vote, and knew anything less would result in a loss. While I can understand respecting the fact he actually pulled it out, I really don’t give him any strategical props for anything he did. His strategy was not his own, it was the collective strategy of EoE who would ultimately be the jury. Which makes the whole thing very underwhelming in my opinion
@FiveN9ne
@FiveN9ne 4 жыл бұрын
I'm also not sure why he was allowed to basically decide he would be making fire with Devens. He gave up the necklace. He was at that moment no longer immune, which means they could just vote him out. Why did he have the power to make that decision? Makes no sense.

I get the whole “Nash equilibrium” concept, and I think keeping in mind what everyone’s best move at any given point is has its merits, but Survivor is so much more complex than that. Human beings are not computers, playing the game with this “Nash equilibrium” as a primary focus results in the worst kind of player. One who leaves the game convinced they made the right moves and it’s because of the mistakes of others that they lost.

In addition to being unprecedented, the Jenna move ended up utterly destroying all the spoilers at the time, if I recall correctly. Survivor Amazon was a HEAVILY spoiled season on the internet and had gotten a lot of the boots correct post-merge. And Heidi was up next, slated to go out at Final 6. When Jenna handed over that necklace, it was an even bigger shock to the people "in the know" that season. It didn't make a huge difference in the end, the spoiler was still right about the endgame, it's just a memorable meta moment for that move.

It should never be understated how good Richard Hatch was, you have to remember the players in Boreno were inventing the game of Survivor, they couldn't rely on previous seasons to help them come up with game play moves plus since everybody is a wild card in that season, it took a serious level of skill to be able to even make it that far. To come up with the idea of throwing the final immunity because he knew that Kelly wouldn't take Rudy and that Rudy would take him because of Rudy's loyalty was genius. Rich couldn't risk winning final immunity because he would then vote out Rudy and there was a major chance Rudy wouldn't vote for him due to breaking his word.
@GeauxWyatt
@GeauxWyatt 5 жыл бұрын
Hopefully this is the last time I’ll comment on EoE. But just wanted to propose something. Maybe Chris giving up immunity will be the beginning of the end of the final four fire making. In this “Big Moves” era the F4 immunity winner will almost always give up immunity if a bigger threat exists, and maybe that makes a hot potato of everyone not wanting immunity. Maybe this happening enough times will piss off Jeff enough to make him get rid of the challenge altogether

i always wondered, what if julie sniffed out what chris was doing, and took chris instead, making gavin/rick go to firemaking. i guess she saw rick as a bigger problem than chris, so thought it would be optimal if the both of them went to firemaking since both could win and there would be 0 chance to win if they were both there, rather than a slightly larger chance if one of them + gaving

I think what makes Hatch's move better is that #1 he did it season 1 and #2 if he won that challenge he would have lost the game (he would have had to vote off Rudy which would have cost him Rudy's vote, because his vote was based entirely on loyalty and Rich backstabbing him would have broke their loyalty). Whereas Parvati throwing the challenge didn't really benefit her (it didn't hurt her either, but it just didn't really have any impact).

Peridiam, I would still like to know why Chris got to decide who went in the fire making challenge. When Chris offers up his immunity to Julie, Julie has immunity. This whole twist is that the immunity holder chooses someone to sit with them forcing the other two to make fire. At this time, Julie has the immunity, she should decide not Chris. If i was her i would take chris with me and make Gavin and Rick make fire. This makes no sense to me the way it played out.
@Peridiam
@Peridiam 5 жыл бұрын
No, the person who wins the challenge gets to decide. Simple as that. Otherwise you can get into an infinite loop where nobody wants the necklace, and thus there's no way to break the cycle. Having the winner be the end-all is the right call.

@@Arman-jx7cx lol well theres obvious ones like woo and colby but I was thinking more along the lines of russell backstabbing danielle or spencer basically "threatening" jeremy to vote off wentworth over him or else he'll make sure the entire jury votes for her

In Marquesas, didn't Vecepia do almost the exact same thing as Richard did in S1? The only difference is that she waited until after Kathy (the "Rudy" in that situation, who would've won against either of the other two people) fell off, then hustled her by making a new deal with Neleh.

Christopher Madison I guess she “almost” did. Bear in mind Rich’s best move was to lose the challenge. Whether or not Neleh or V won wasn’t such a big deal for V. Kathy didn’t even vote for V anyway. V could’ve won that challenge all the same and the outcome is probably the same. Not so much for Rich.

Peridiam, Season 40 is an all winner season and Jeff Probst at the season 38 didn’t say go apply to be on survivor do you think season 41 is an all returnee season or is survivor ending at season 40?
@Peridiam
@Peridiam 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think 40 is the end. They'll definitely ask people to apply after S39.

i think aras also threw the final immunity at panama after terry falls into the water. he let danielle won so if danielle cuts terry and breaks her promise, she then loses his vote and the la mina's votes. If aras won that immunity and cut terry, maybe terry would be hurt and vote for danielle with the lamina. given that aras is arrogant that time, terry could be pissed and vote against him. 3 lamina plus bruce. Maybe danielle could have won? lol.
