A very interesting video came out. The video involves a close quarters tank battle between Russian and Ukrainian tanks. The video appears to be something straight out of a movie or a videogame.

There was at least one tank on tank ambush by Ukrainians on a Russian tank + IFV convoy with everything visible in the early days of the war. But it's indeed something that has only very rarely been recorded and is therefore quite interesting.

It never was. At the Battle of 73 Easting, one of the largest tank battles in modern history, the engagement range was roughly what you see here. As a general rule, the engagement range of any tank battle is subject to terrain, weather, sensors and all matter of other conditions. It could be measured in tens of meters or thousands of meters. A smart adversary that isn't equipped with the best sensors will seek to engage at the closest range possible so as to nullify the enemy sensor advantage. But, if the traverse speed, projectile tech and crew skill aren't there, they will likely still lose...

Yes it feels surreal. Just like that all the men of the tank crew are dead. For what? These conflicts are complicated and we as humans are faulty to let a escalation like this happen, where innocent suffer. Of course some are to blame more for than others, the ones which act as aggressors and escalate things unnecessarily instead of searching a more peaceful and diplomatic option. One thing you can say for certain is that the unnecessary loss of human lives and wars in general are just terrible and it needs to be prevented at all costs. (Edit: Changed some of the text, because I originally wrote it so that it seemed like it's unclear who the main aggressors of this conflict are.)

Tanks drove so close to each other not because they couldn't see each other, but because the trees prevented them from making an accurate shot at the target. Ukrainian T-64BVs have been modernized, they have thermal imagers, it's not bad tanks. T-64BV tanks have no problem in visibility, this is not about that at all. It's not WWII, not Vietnam, not Afghanistan, not Iraq, not Yemen. Which tank you're sitting on almost doesn't matter in this war, because era of tank battles ended with WWII. Most of the tanks in this war were destroyed by artillery fire, atgms and kamikaze drones(especially ukrainian tanks). For a drone and artillery, any tank is food. Tank battles account for less than 1% of all destroyed tanks. Even helicopters destroyed 10 times more tanks and other vehicles in this war.

Indeed! It's the reason Sweden decided to buy the Leopard 2. The indigenous Swedish tank concept was similar to the T14 Armata with all the crew in a box using cameras to look around. They realised that firstly, Sweden didn't have the technology or expertise to make the tank and secondly that it was impossible for tank crews to have good awareness without being able to look around themselves. Apparently it messes with the human brain to just use screens.
@michaelbruce6190

Excellent situational awareness by the Russian crew knowing what they were up against and getting a good line of sight shot on the T-64, which probably had no idea the T-80 was even there because it lacks a thermal sight, the crazy close range shows that.

@@GuardDog42 and you say this why? It's very obvious the Ukrainian vehicles were probing way before the engagement took place, so the T-80 knew who and what they were up against because they didn't sweat the T-64 at all and moved up slowly to get line of sight on the Ukrainian tank.
@GuardDog42
@GuardDog42 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelbruce6190 it's not obvious at all, in fact it's SOP for russian federation mechanized infantry units and armor to screen with artillery fire after contact with basically anything. From the looks of things I imagine the Ukrainians were basically watching the road at that moment while moving about hoping they didn't end up on the receiving end of indirect fire. if the russians knew what they were up against why would they push the point in close quarters when they have the advantage at range in both vision and firepower. If the other vehicle was quick on the draw even without thermal they could have so easily landed a shot almost instantaneously. If the treeline was easy to see through why wouldn't the russians just shoot while their flir could see and the enemy's antiquated optics couldn't? Because they just didn't know, this was very clearly an oh shit moment, I think they knew the enemy was there sure, they just didn't think they were anywhere near that close. I think the russians pushed because they thought they were peeling and wanted to push the point. If the russian vehicles knew exactly what they were up against there would be no reason not to stagger your approach away from directly where the enemy vehicle was looking. Armored war just isn't conducted at these ranges like that. What we're looking at is fear, panic, and confusion. With fire superiority you just don't park a tank a hundred feet from another tank to capitalize, that's not a tactic that's an accident.

This video highlights the value of modern thermal sights and the value of drone ISR assets, the russians knew there was a single enemy tank and what type it probably was, and knew they had a sensor advantage and were likely to get the first shot, which is why the crews were willing to maneuver as confidently and aggressively as they did. For example they only pushed the Uke tank with a single tank despite having a numerical advantage they were confident they would be able to get the first shot on target.

In this day and age, I don’t get why all tanks/armored units don’t have a dedicated drone scout the area, especially when operating hatch closed. I know it’s an extra person or an extra role that someone has to fill, but it seems like an overwhelming advantage that they are not utilizing as often as they should. Awareness in a tank is a hell of a lot more important than armor/firepower in my opinion. Knowing where they are, where they shouldn’t be, where they should go, positioning and being able to pick and choose when and where to engage or retreat, etc. is exponentially more decisive than having a better tank. Had the Ukrainian tank had the same drone scouting the area they would have seen that this was a losing fight (2 superior tanks vs 1) and could have easily maneuvered themselves behind the cover of trees/foliage and retreated to fight another day.

As far as I know Recon drones are used for commander's to get operational awareness or small ordinance drops. ideally it would be useful for every squad to have a drone but they would need to have a full production line for drones. A majority of drones Ukraine has are predominantly donated by civilians. So my best assumption is they don't have enough.

I don't think it will be a blind hit because, as you said yourself, the t80 has a thermo-vision, which is a serious advantage in low visibility and not the hottest weather. The Russians had the drone operational and had info on the enemy, the operator could have been someone in the bmps. Imagine the leading tank having a video feed of the drone, info via radio communication can't match that. The Ukrainians probably had a drone of their own nearby because they seemed like they had info on the Russian tank movement and actions, just no line of sight due to the inferior sensors to engage.

Both Russians and Ukrainians are known to use jamming extensively. This could have been a situation where Russians had the situational awareness and Ukrainians did not, otherwise it's baffling to see a solitary Ukrainian tank prancing around and not backing the fuck out of there while two Russian tanks followed by the two BMPs racing towards it in broad day light.

@@f1aziz the Ukrainian tank although much older had a gun that could kill the more modern tanks. The Russian t80s would probably outperform the Ukrainian tank at medium or long range. The decision to try and kill the tanks at close range might have been made. Ukraine has done other such close range attacks, killing the leading mbt and stop the apcs it was escorting. In this case there were 2 russian mbts making it more dangerous.

German Panzer Abt during WWII quickly realized that the Cmdr was best having his hatch open and just popping his out for a better all round view of the situation. It caused some casualties from shrapnel from shells hitting near the tank , that's actually how Otto Carius got injured a few times. When going into battle the Germans always kept at least Cmdr hatch & sometimes loaders open but rest closed, Russian doctrine was to always be fully shut up in battle which meant they had very limited views and I mean extremely limited, some didn't have radio commands with each other so the Russians had no idea what was going on only what they saw through small vision slits. They started installing them in Russian tanks nearer the end of the war but suffered greatly and the Germans took the opportunity to have a better view of the battle to make better tactical decisions for the small percentage of danger,which as was shown was the best decision to no button up during an engagement .

Israeli tank commanders used to do the same thing, ride shoulders-out or even stand on the seat and go waist-out. It gave them superior visibility but they took horrendous casualties from artillery. One unexpected benefit of standing on the seat is that if your tank gets blown up underneath you, you're often blown out of the hatch like a cork - while surprisingly survivable, this is not a comfortable or safe procedure, and some men didn't survive the ride, but in several notable cases during the Yom Kippur War, Israeli TCs survived MULTIPLE ejections from different Centurions over the course of several days of fighting. Shmuel Askarov, Avigdor Khalani and Yossi ben-Hanan all had this happen.

Sovjet doctrine didn’t include multiple reverse gear. They’d punch a hole into enemy lines and just rush into it with whatever tank they have. Eventually overwhelming the enemy.
@wordofswords5386

Yeah on a operational level. But on a tactical level, its ridiculous to think a Tank would never have to reverse to get into a better position. Its a stupid design even with the doctrine accounted for.

@@wordofswords5386 I agree, it's stupid and ignorant. Even in the past rushing tanks in like that will just get yourself killed and provide additional roadblock for your enemies. Imagine a tank convoy getting ambush and the front tank is taken out. Good luck reversing or manuvering out of the line, might as well jump out and run.

A correction the rounds you showed are 3BM42M sometimes called 3VBM-44 (which can be seen printed on the round) or 3BM44. the main difference is instead of being a segmented penetrator with a steel jacket like on the older 3BM42 its has a monobloc tungsten penetrator.

It is likely that this was a fuel tank hit because when a tank is fully exploded it takes a few seconds for the ammunition to explode and the spontaneous combustion of the side is another sign of a fuel tank hit
