The bench clearing brawls of the 80's and 90's are still something to see today. Those were usually how the penalties built up to record numbers. You won't ever see them in today's NHL without MUCH backlash. Still, there have been real zingers past then, such as Flyers-Senators brawl on March 5, 2004.

Hockey was still pretty brutal in 2004. Started to shift after the lockout. Today guys stand with their backs turned facing the glass not thinking anyone is going to hit them.

You nailed it. I'm not exactly old but we were taught right before peewee how to give and take a hit and to never stand 4 feet from the boards with your back turned. I see these hits now and I don't understand why the players do it. Were they not taught not to do that? Even if they weren't taught, it's common sense lol

Yeah, because the refs probably won't give you more than about 20 before you get tossed. You might get a 5 and 10 and stay in the game -- and that's a MAYBE in today's NHL.

I remember being at a Canucks game (against the Flyers, I think) in the early ‘90s in the old Pacific Coliseum where Gino Odjick (who was evidently using an Easton Aluminum at the time) crosschecked someone so hard it just bent the stick around him. Needless to say, a brawl ensued and Gino ended up shirtless with no pads left from the waist up challenging anyone who was willing to go. Man, he was a tough SOB!

@@Amandazg8no, the only Flyers game I ever saw at the Pacific Colosseum was when I was small enough that I got to play during the intermission and I believe it ended 2-1 for Vancouver in overtime. This kind of behavior is despicable. There's no room in hockey for this nonsense, and it needs to be STOPPED ASAP! Suspensions and fines need to be stiffened. Hitting(aka: "checking") is antiquated and has no place in the sport of hockey today. **Haha, nahhh, I'm just f#cking with you, I LOVE this kind of shit! The NFL is slowly turning into a pansy fest, and we can't let them neuter our game of hockey like they did to football!! Checking is a skill. Players are taught how to give and receive checks, so as to minimize risks of injury to both players. There is a risk of injury in every single sport. You will never have a risk-free physical sport. But that doesn't mean you eliminate all aspects of it. I love hockey. Please don't f#ck with it.

@SylasNigel who keeps their ticket stubs from 19 years ago? I definitely don't need to prove anything to you, believe me or don't. Even if I provided a stub how could you prove I wasn't there? Section 121, row 23..can't remember the seat number but it was my exes father's season tickets. I also went to at least 20 games that season, also including game 6 against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference finals. Simon Gagne from the left side of Khabibulin to win it. Hitchcock was the coach that year, before the lockout. Before Crosby and Ovechkin. We played the Devils in the first round and won in five games, played the Leafs in the second round and won in 6. Game 6 was away in Toronto, in OT Darcy Tucker laid out Sami Kapanen on the boards, Roenick shot the game winner against Cujo.

I wish refs would let goalies go at it more nowadays!? It's so rare when it gets that crazy, that the goalies even think about fighting each other and if it gets that far and both goalies seem wiling then let em go at it!!? It's 2 goalies in full pads...the chances of either of them really hurting the other with punches is pretty slim!? Most goalie fights r just awkward fights with punches thrown but not many landed and they usually end up in a heap fairly quickly falling over each other's equipment!? I say if it gets to that point and 1 goalie looks down ice and challenges the other or if one of goalies comes to red line to challenge other goalie and they're both willing then let em go at it!!? I remember a Bruins game not to far back where Ullmark I think was in on scrum around bet a lil and other goalie came to red line and when Ullmark saw him he went towards him and it looked like both goalies were willing to fight but the refs stopped it and wouldn't let Ullmark close enough and other goalie just waited on his side of red line!? Refs should've just asked em both if they were willing to fight and if both said yes then they should've let em go!? When goalies fight it's a pretty slim chance of either of em getting really hurt cuz if they get chance to fight it usually doesn't last very long cuz they tire out quickly with all those pads on, and they rarely land any punches let alone any really good ones!? It's more just an awkward grabbing, pushing, and shoving sort of wrestling match with a few wild punches here and there!? And they usually end up grabbing each other and spinning around while wrestling with each other and trying to get off a half decent punch!? If goalies r willing to fight I say LET EM GO AT IT!!!?

It wasn't as bad as it looked. If you wanted to tangle with Rob Ray you better be ready. Brasheer was a big tough guy and I'm not sure he was up to the task. Also I think Clarke had a valid (slightly) beef about the wrong guys fighting. Although if you have made it to the NHL you know how to fight. You think Crosby hasn't danced? Or even the Great One? Think about when Gretzky started playing. During the Broad Street Bully era. You know some coaches tried to stop him through murder on the ice.

The lockout partially ruined the NHL. It really killed the iconic rivalries we saw in the 80s and 90s, and really watered down the intensity in the sport. I think salary caps have also diluted the talent pool of some teams despite the NHL's mantra that hockey players are the most talented they've ever been in general. Wings and Avs of the 90s, or the 80s Oilers would absolutely destroy any modern NHL team.

All of this stemmed from Martin Havlat and his antics in previous games. He was very dirty player, slashing players just all around dirty plays. He was a coward, in hockey you will have to pay the piper and Havlat always let his teammates fight his battles. The Flyers (and for that matter most of teams) had enough and took makers into their own hands!

you need to work on your scripts: the next game in line is not the "recent" one you chose between pens and isles, but the bruins vs north stars with 13 minutes less. Obviously if you go down the list until you get to that pens/isles game, of course it doesn't come "remotely close", since you skipped 4 games in between the two in the all time list. What's kinda sad about this is that I watched many of your videos, and this is always the same: you come up with a great idea, but the result is, at best, "fine". I would compare you to a high draft pick that just never makes an impact on the game: lots of potential, but basic skills and no improvement from one game/video to the other
