Finally got my hands on an Apecs AP cylinder - I’ve been curious about them ever since I heard about them; even more so after reading the claims on their website...💪🤔🔐

I also have one of these and it’s so easy to pick, I’m sure I’ve heard somewhere the pins are alternately set at 45 degrees so I rake at 45 degrees from the left and right to get the false set and then do the slider’s like you 👍,they really do look like quality locks but so easy to open .

APECS is a company based in Moscow. They established their door lock business in the early 90's. Initially they were called APEX but in the late 90s they changed it to APECS. When I came across APEX for the first time like 25 years ago they tried to bullshit me that their locks kind of aren't made in China but they looked 99% identically to the Chinese locks I sold in bulk. They kept me bullshit till all over a sudden I found one lock with set of keys which had Chinese letters stamped on the same as on my ones. Eventually they surrendered and confirm that their door locks are Chinese but APEX branded on demand. Then set a deal with APEX and smuggled their locks to Ukraine.

In a sense, it is the most secure lock available in UK because it is 'BSI 3* Diamond Secure'. The highest rating. But then there are other locks with the same rating. (I suspect anti-snapping and anti-bumping figure highly in the BSI accreditation, maybe 'picking' less so ?)

Make it even more secure - first thing to do is file off the company name badge from the front of the lock; making it more difficult to determine the internal configuration.

Since it's easy for a burglar to snap a handle and gain access to a cylinder, do you think it would be a good idea to weld the outside handle to the door instead of letting it be fixed by screws? Provided that you can still change the cylinder when needed by removing the plate that's on the inside of the door and then removing the cylinder from the inside.

I had no idea they have different levels of security pins on the exterior vs. interior. Makes complete sense when you say it, but I was baffled why some retailers detail the exterior vs. interior sides without stating why - that must be it!

Well , technically it is true , it is BSI verified , with probably TS007 and the rest is simple marketing bs. It's kind of Yale Platinum / Superior , tho , I've noticed that both don't have trap pins or sidebar isn't flush , so it may jam the lock. Companies have usually such wording , that if something isn't like someone thought it is going to be , they have covered themselves from further responsibility / lawsuits.

Any chance of a link to the tools to buy please or the brand and names please. I'm going on callout and these are the locks used now. Asked for training and when shown it was they break the handle off snap the first part then basically destroy the lock smash it out which breaks the whole locking mechanism then once in replace the whole locking mechanism new lock new handles. Which to me is stupid instead of actually training the team how to do it properly with no damage. The cost of training would eventually outway the cost of replacing the new parts. I'd just like to do it properly instead of hammering away at 2 in the morning in say a block of flats waking everyone up. Because I wouldn't be to happy

What is the best euro profile lock cylinder on the market?
@matt79de
@matt79de 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Ash. Loved the comments on their claim. This video leaves me with two questions: What's that pick again? What, based on what You picked so far, do you think is actually the most pick resistant Euro Cylinder lock? As an aside and for those unaware, i may add here that security isn't exclusively about pick resistance, but also has to incorparate drill protection, snap protection and whatnot (which the video also hints at). So to Apecs' credit: They didn't claim that it is 'the most pick-resistant lock'. And it's probably a somewhat sane assumption, that most locks in use that do get attacked don't get attacked by experienced lock pickers with pick and tension tool. (I myself tend to forget about that everytime i watch my favorite lock picking channels. 😉) Sadly, testing the remaining security features would be destructive obviously, although it would be interesting too (esp. given that claim).
@vryko8567
@vryko8567 2 жыл бұрын
As a locksmith myself I would say that pick resistance is the least worrying as, as you correctly guessed, there's basically a 0% chance of someone picking their way into your house. I've not heard of it. It's way more likely to be a lock snapped, door jimmied open, or a smashed window, etc. They want to do the quietest, if not quickest way of getting in unnoticed (so drilling is very unlikely) and picking takes too much practice and potentially time exposed at the door (picking in the comfort of your house is one thing, outside in a live locksmith situation is another - then factor in added stress if you're doing it illegally). As for drill protection, it's basically useless against something like a die grinder with the correct burr. (many videos of people destroying 'high security' cylinders such as the Ultion) with them. Or the new kid on the block is the magi burr which fits in a Dremel tool (again, lots of videos on this). I've used the die grinder on a 3* ATK and it was like cutting butter.
@randommadness1021
@randommadness1021 3 жыл бұрын
You really like those dimple lock don't you lol. I think they can get away with saying that because it has security pins, sliders and anti-drill measures. Just a guess, but I reckon that's how they got the ability to say that sort of comment.

I think the UK rating assumes hook + bottom of the keyway tensioner. If a "pro" cannot get the lock open with those tools, it will get high marks for being pick-proof.

Depends on your budget. If you want spend over £140 there are things like the Abloy Protec2 and Urban Alps Stealth key. There are more expensive and higher security ones out there too. But since no one picks locks for crime, a solid British standard 3 star lock suits most people
