For years I’ve wondered why men and women chose to use the toxic version of ceruse long after they knew that it was dangerous; In my documentary I finally managed to figure out the answer to this question...

Lisa Eldridge: An artist who has studied the history of her craft so carefully that she can use all of that knowledge to hone her craft today. Is that why her looks can look gorgeously modern and yet timeless at the same time?? What a rare gem she is!! Just spendid.

Makeup history is a subject that has for far too long been overlooked as “unimportant” or “superficial” simply because it was associated with women, but Lisa’s series really proves what a significant role it played in the social, cultural and even political history of the last 1000+ years. Bravo Lisa! Looking forward to more!

Wayne Goss has a white foundation. I used it as Halloween makeup last year and wore it all over my face. It was wonderful! No lead poisoning and it made my skin so conditioned by the end of the day. As a chemist & historical costumer, specifically georgian times, I have replicated many recipe's on make up I have found. One on make up particularly states to focus on the undertone & mix a hint of pigment in, so look lively. & the reproduction of that recipe was the most breath taking foundation formula, color & look I have ever seen. I could not believe my eyes. It was naturally silky, slightly peachy/rose & reflected light as if you wore a lovely, LOVELY natural highlighter. The texture was comfortable & light, it was not very expensive to make. Was a bit drying though. And awfully deadly. But LORD that make up was astonishing. A university in the US has recreated the same recipe & when I did, I nearly cried, it was so beautiful.

Besides the incomparable Lisa, you might like Erin Parsons Makeup. She’s equally obsessed with makeup history and collecting historical and vintage bits and bobs, and she does some fun videos where she makes ancient makeup out of original ingredients. I think she’s done videos about the Egyptians, the Babylonians and Neanderthals? Lisa is the GOAT, of course, but Erin is a master as well. The two are my favorite historical beauty personalities.

Fascinating! I appreciate your curiosity, Lisa. I’ve always wondered what made so many continue wearing this. I don’t think it would be worth it at all but there is no doubt that it was popular. I love the end of Dangerous Liaisons when Glen Close is wiping off her makeup and you see her suffering skin. Not the only thing about that character that was sufferable but it illustrated the catch 22 perfectly. Once you started wearing it frequently you couldn’t stop.
