How good was Socrates actually? #GOAT
New video about one of the most controversial and naturally talented players we've seen over the 1980's in football. In this episode we take on Socrates who played for Santos, Flamengo, Brazil, Corinthians for most of his career.

@@jerryoshea3116 very true but Brazil’s goalie, Valdir Peres, did not help them at all. He and Serginho ( their Center forward) were the weakest link on that great team. Brazil ‘82 and Netherlands ‘74 were two of the best teams I have ever seen.

That is 22 generations you are talking about as "only", without videos like these they would continue to have never heard of him. Videos like these are well needed as to not let these legends be invisible to newer generations, now, and in the future.

@kevinbadalkar9740
@kevinbadalkar9740 Жыл бұрын
@@larsonfrederick7885 Well if a player succeeds in Europe, it does mean he is exceptional enough to deal with 1) more physically fitter players (this was true in the 80s, not since the 90s onwards) 2) An environment with better tactical knowhow in order to stop gifted players (again, this is not applicable now as there are lots of excellent South American coaches who have succeeded in Europe). So, the time when Socrates played was a less globalized era. Socrates failing in Europe in Italy does not make him a bad player as that is just one bad season but it does imply that he was not as gifted as people like Maradona and Zico who both succeeded in Italy. So, this is not just a question of Europe vs south America. I agree Europe hogs the limelight more than South America or elsewhere but that is just because the best superstars are concentrated over there due to the money to be earned.

For those who are not from Brazil, know that Sócrates did not graduate from any medical school. He graduated from the best university in Brazil, USP (It's like being a Harvard graduate and playing for the NBA, by analogy). That's incredible how Dr Soccer had wished his death to be on a specified day with a certain criteria and it coming to pass. Another master piece brother and what stands you out from the rest of the you tube artists in the beautiful game is your soothing commentary with emotional passion! Like Socrates you are one of the greats of their chosen arts and craft.

I was lucky enough to watch Socrates play football in Spain 82 with the great Brazilian team of the time. Socrates was a giant at midfield. Fantastic with the ball, dribbling, passing, shooting and heading. U name it, he done it all. Every time I talk about that team, Brazil 82, Socrates name always comes in second behind me one of the best Brazilian N. 10s ever, Zico. Glad I watched this video cos I didn’t know or ever bother to find out what happened to Socrates after he left Italy. Thanks and keep up the good work

Such a sad end, that 82 Brazil side wow just wow, watched them lose to Italy in a crowded pub in Edinburgh, everyone upset at the final whistle, we will never see their like again, so much talent and above them all loomed Socrates, RIP Doutor.

It is good and fair to talk more about him. When I was a child he was very known in my country , Cameroon, between the 80's and the 90's; between 1986 Mexico world cup and Italy world cup.

My dad would sometimes talk about Socrates. I never knew his greatness until this video. Yes, I know I have made the same comment in your Baggio video but that's true, my dad keeps talking about these old legends who I had no idea of until you drop a video on them. 😂 Lastly, great video as always! Very insightful.

Socrates ... "anyone who runs doesn't think". I daresay he might have struggled with managers of the modern game. Yet in a far more physical era he seemed able to create magic while never leaving cruise control.
