@@johnnynyr1981 We used full spectrum lights, heat mat until plant germinated and a small fan when we started seeds for this years garden. The cherry tomato got some fruit. We pruned it but now wish we hadn't. It did great in a 5 gallon bucket when weather allowed it.

Boy this brings back memories. In the 1950's use to send persimmons cookies to my husband during Korean War. He said his commards in arm's use to gobble them up. So had to double up on the quantity. He said my cookies saved his unit. 😂

A neighbor of mine (Zone 10b) has a large, mature Hachiya persimmon tree. It’s a Japanese variety that produces large, astringent fruit. When the fruit softens, if harvest is late, the sidewalk gets covered in ample orange goo. They are delicious and soft like pudding if picked at the right time.

We collected from 2-3 wild American persimmon trees on our property this year. They've received no pruning or care so far. We got 17lbs of fruit off of them this year. 6lbs or so were seeds. The heaviest production was the last week of September and first week of October. (Southern Indiana)

just learned this week that you can take astringency away by dehydrating astringent permissions. Been doing this to my slightly underlip persimmons and they are amazing! great vid!

Dang, never knew that. Great info, that will allow me to start dehydrating earlier rather than waiting for everything to get super soft and for the astringency to dissipate.

@@Username-cq2moAre you in the USA? Most people watching this channel are, but you should be able to find sources by Google/etc searches for "persimmon tree for sale" fairly easily. Asian persimmons are readily available at fruit nurseries located where hardy (West Coast, west of the mountains, usually on Diospyros lotus rootstock; southern USA from Zone 7 or perhaps 6 south, on native Diospyros virginiana rootstock). Improved American (D. virginiana) and hybrids are more difficult but hardier. Which are you after?

The American Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) is found growing all the way down to south Florida such as Collier County and Miami-Dade County which are in zone 10. The trees found in that area in the late 1800's and early 1900's by the a well known botanist of the day named John Kunkel Small (1869-1938) were named Diospyros mosieri due to it's often noticeably smaller but more upright sized tree and smaller leaves and fruit. However later botanist lumped it in with Diospyros virginiana. One thing to note here is the fact that the American Persimmons in the north and west have a chromosome count of 90 (hexaploid) and the trees further to the south, particularly in Florida have a lower chromosome count of 60 (tetraploid). So the Persimmons growing wild here in Florida do have a different look to them, especially the ones in south Florida.

There are many astringent varieties of Asian persimmons, so astringent doesn’t necessarily indicate an American persimmon.

My wife is Korean and grew up eating persimmons, maybe I'll plant the American variety for here in CO! Love everything about the tree - beautiful, not huge, autumn color, fruit, which also has gorgeous color. Awesome. Go Tuck!!

Tuck is so cute my dog is a Chihuahua 10 pound Chihuahua. I have certain areas where I have to keep it locked so she isn’t always out with me where I go but I’ve tried to give her all kinds of fruits and vegetables. Sometimes she likes stuff, but nothing like Tuck! He’s so cute and he’s such a sport. He just such a good guy thats just always chomping on something out there. He’s the cutest little thing.❤️🌞 🐕🧚‍♂️

James, here in south central Kentucky, this summer, I did experience Japanese beetles eating some of my persimmon leaves, and I did have some persimmon wilt. Not to steal your thunder, but I thought I would share this info. with others. Bowling Green, KY did have another round of tornadoes today, like we did almost exactly 2 years ago to the day. I'm safe and no home damage. There is damage west and east of me. Near Hopkinsville, KY and Russellville, KY, there was damage.

After seeing more of the local videos from yesterday, I did have a funnel cloud go by my house, about a half mile away. However, damage here is very limited compared to the massive tornado of Dec. 10th, 2021.

here Indonesia, zone 12, persimmon grow well here in some place. We use lime on skin to remove astringent sap. when you want to eat, just wash lime until clean

We have two Asian persimmons in zone 7a and they gave us a bumper crop this year( about 15 gallons). We pick them early, before the raccoons get them, and ripen them indoors. We put a lot of them in the refrigerator which delays ripening.

Yes!!! Finally seeing persimmons get some love. Here in the Midwest I have eaten persimmons most of my life and it's one of the few things to make the colder weather something to look forward to. Great channel. I have learned a lot of gardening tips and will definitely continue watching.

My mom used to get persimmons way back when and I don't even know what variety but my Mom would make jelly out of them, make juice by straining it through a metal cone shaped colander and lastly she would make a few pies too.

I had only tried the non-astringent persimmon up until this year when I came across an astringent one. I don't know when I have ever been so shocked in my life, I was NOT prepared for that sensation of dry mouth. I must have looked so shocked, its no wonder everyone I was with laughed at me! 😂🤣

I haven’t had an American persimmon for a long time. I used to eat them at my grandma’s house when I was a kid. I loved that jelly like texture and the more chewy sections in the center.

I purchased two persimmon trees which were delivered and planted on Saturday; one of them is astringent, and one of them is non-astringent. I cannot wait until they fruit! 😀 I’m in zone 10.

I have a self-fertile hybrid tree in my yard, the fruits are 4 inches in diameter. But it gets leaf rust, and needs to be sprayed with fungicide once a year.

James please try Hoshigaki persimmons look it up! It is the traditional way Japanese have used astringes persimmons! Although you can use sweet Japanese persimmon like Fuyu persimmons if you dry them quickly, you'll find that they tend to attract bugs and are quicker to develop mold during the drying process. Plus, the point of hoshigaki is to enhance persimmons that are somewhat less alluring when fresh.Sep 24, 2018 💡💡💡💡💡💡💡

I have a yard full of bird-sown Texas persimmons (Diospyros texana) that I’m letting grow until they bloom so I can sort out which are male and which are female. I can’t wait until they start making little fruits. I’ll probably add an Asian variety to the mini orchard in the kitchen garden, too. I agree these wonderful little fruits are badly underrated.

Where I live in Missouri persimmons are native. I have a Yates American Persimmon in the back yard. I harvest the fruit mash it through a strainer. The skin and seeds are left behind. I keep the pulp in the freezer and use it any where I would use jam.

When iI was a teen we lived on a property that had a native persimmon tree. We all thought it was totally useless because of the taste. We never realized that they lost that taste when they were soft. we always thought they were just rotting. Oh what we missed!

And here I bought a blueberry tree today but after watching your video persimmons sound like a better idea. As always great content and encouragement to keep working on my own garden. Oh yes, Tuck may be a guard dog and on patrol but I'm always smiling as he collects a big salary in veggies. Haha

Make sure you get two blueberry bushes as most varieties need each other to pollinate and produce fruit! Best of luck🙏🏼

I have 20 1 year old trees in northern Michigan . Bought American seeds off Amazon and really struggle to get 50% germination and also get past 2 inch mark . I cold stratified 60 seeds started indorse in Michigan . Planted in January and by October they got to almost 2 feet tall . Let's hope they make it thru winter !!

Fun fact, even the yellow crunchy one if you keep it in normal room temperature for 2-3weeks will turn into red and become very soft.

The astringent are loved by wild birds in the winter and our chickens eat the ones that fall on the ground. Not a scrap is left by February. It is the most underrated fruit tree.

That is not a "sad" looking garden. That is a 'job well done' looking garden. We've seen the walloping punch it packs. Thanks for all the info. on the persimmon trees. For some reason I just wrote off that I could *ever* entertain the thought of *ever* planting a persimmon tree. I'm still nervous about it. But at least I now know that it is possible. (Also, come to think of it...I don't recall ever having seen persimmon trees for sale around these parts. I thought that that might be an indication that they wouldn't grow where I am🤔🤔🤔) Otherwise I'm going to need you to email me some of those perfectly beautiful ones that you have there🤩😍😋

Hey 👋🏾 James! Quick question, I have a Fuyu Persimmon and I’m in Zone 8B in Texas and I had a problem with the leaf-footed bugs on mine. Fuju are my fav fruit. I can remember growing up in the central valley of California. It was common to find boxes of fruit at the end of driveways, meant to be gifts to those walking by. Free fuju was the best?!

I got mine planted back in 2019 and I already got so much fruits this year. I got both astringent kind and the none astringent. Actually I got totally of 14 persimmon trees planted 😊

Thanks for the info.. on persimmons. My mom used to get persimmons from a lady with an older house in S. California. The tree was quite large. My mom used the ripe pulp to make persimmon cookies with raisins. They are delicious, and have a banana bread-like consistency. Love you Tuck!❤❤❤

Mine have been in the ground for three years now. I am so eager to have some fruit! I live in zone 5a, and from what I've read, that's too cold for Nikita's Gift, so I have Prok and a few others, which are straight American varieties. Love your enthusiasm and that of your sidekick, Tuck!

I live in Missouri and have eaten persimmons all my life, mostly just growing along the road. I like the mushy naive ones. Since I retired I wanted persimmon trees. Unfortunately for me, the darn deer ate them to the ground.

I once seen one of these trees in Louisiana. I asked my neighbor about the tree because he is a native of the area. He told me the tree i found is a persimmon tree. He cautioned me about trying the fruit before it ripened as it would "Tie my tongue." A little research into them led me to a California University that sends out tree cuttings for cultivation. I never got around to it, but it does look like a nice tree to plant.
