I'm so excited I just picked up one of these today at a yard sale for just a couple of dollars. It has a solid bottom not corrugated but it was in really decent shape. It was sitting on a concrete garage floor so there is some rust on the bottom I need to clean off but excited to add that to my ones to use.

That was quite a gift from Ben. It looks like a Type 15 from 1931 - 1932. This is my favorite model year: the last with the full-face machined frog, and the first with the larger depth adjustment wheel. That thingy down in front of the tote (rear handle) is the frog adjustment screw. Remove the blade/chipbreaker and loosen the two screws on the front of the frog, and then you can use the adjustment screw move the frog forward or backward to give a narrower or wider throat for finer or coarser shavings, respectively. Read up on the Type 15 and you'll appreciate this beauty even more.

Nice trying plane (or jointer), the grooves on sole is to capture resin during planing and also reduces friction. They are usually the most expensive size for planes costing around $200 - $300+.

Bailey refers to Leonard Bailey, a designer and plane maker who patented several designs for hand planes in the mid 1800s. In 1869, Stanley Rule & Level bought seven patent rights to his designs. While their relationship with Mr. Bailey only lasted until 1875, Stanley retained the patent rights and eventually the use of the Bailey name. Stanley’s standard line of bench planes are commonly referred to as Bailey planes, and throughout the years many were cast with the Bailey name at the toe. virginiatoolworks.com/reference/dictionary-of-bench-plane-parts/ BTW: It was a demerit in my school to rest a bench plane on its sole; planes should rest on their cheeks.

Cody, you can also undo the 'blade screw' using the lever cap. There is way less chance of tearing up the screw head compared to using the screw head. Second: you don't need to have another tool laying around, searching that for half an hour and then realizing that it was in your left pocket.

Nice jointer! I've had better luck sharpening the bevel when I keep a finger on the back side of the bevel as I work the iron back and forth. Keeping presure on the back side of the bevel helps to keep the bevel flat on the sandpaper or stone and helps prevent one from rocking the iron and therefore rolling over the edge.

Hi There, living your video posts. I have 6 planes that I have acquired from my Dad, and his Dad. Some of them are I think from the 1030's. Great tools. I make Greenland paddles from scratch,and my planes are the primary tool! I sharpen them on Japanese wet stones with a sharpening jig. I also find that pulling the plane towards me,rather than pushing away gives me more control,and no digging with the plane and my paddles. I primarily use Alaskan yellow cedar,with Philippine mahagony accents in my laminated paddles,and straight Alaskan Yellow Cedar in my solids. I love your videos, learning a huge amount. Thank you for all that you do!!

Run the back of the paper over a sharp angle on the edge of a table or such with a bit of pressure and it will straighten the curl. Put the paper backside down on the table and draw it down across the edge. Hopefully that makes sense.

hey cody, your're right the number 8 is the largest metal/ bailey style plane made and the corrugated bottom is pretty common especially with larger planes. The reason for it is that larger planes tend to be harder to flatten so stanley thought the less metal you have to remove the easier and quicker to flatten. Also as AJ stated the adjustment in the deep back is for advancing and retracting the frog. if you are planing highly figured wood you can advance it really close to prevent tear out and of course retract for a more agresssive cut. Beautiful plane BTW!!!

Cody, I would very highly recommend Norton's water stones for sharpening your irons. I use them for mine, as well as chisels, knives, etc. I have two dedicated to razors. Lie Nielson had the best deal on them the last I checked. They are a dream to work with. Furthermore, I believe it was on your channel that a gentleman recommended NOT using diamond plates on anything but ceramic. FWIW. Blessings, Jim

Love the videos, great job.... You mentioned diamond stones and I have to say I love them... I recommend starting with the Trend Diamond plate... its 8"x3" and its double sided 300/1000grit. I started with this stone thinking it would be all I needed after all do we really need to sharpen more than 1000 I thought I could just strop it with leather and honing compund, and that worked really well but alas after a while I bought the 4000 grit stone from DMT and that is plenty but I couldn't help it I bought the 8000 grit DMT after that and stropping after that leaves a surface that is a mirror. Is it necessary not really.... LOL! But like I always say if your are going to build something, might as well overbuild it!
@pmcKANE
@pmcKANE 9 жыл бұрын
HANDCRAFTED CREATIVE This is good advice. There's a wide range of stones but these are a great choice in decent grits. When you're putting in the effort to hand sharpen yourself then you might as well hit the high numbers, the difference is significant especially on precision tools.
@JorgeAraujo
@JorgeAraujo 9 жыл бұрын
jrmym2 Yeah its pricey but well worth it... 1) It should last forever if you take good care of it. 2) It stays flat don't have to flatten it. 3) I also use them to sharpen Knives, Router bits, Chisels and Plane blades... But all of this is just my opinion, $124 is worth it to me... not to everybody.
