Martin Scorsese's "Kundun" -- a film detailing the early life of the 14th Dalai Lama, China's invasion of Tibet under Mao, and the Dalai Lama's exile -- changed the course of global entertainment. In 1996, China was just beginning to flex its international muscle with control of foreign art and information. Disney had ambitions to tap the emerging Chinese market for cheap labor, theme parks, and even English language learning schools. And when the two collided, the result was Disney's total capitulation to Communist China's demands for the promise of access... and the beginning of decades of censorship in film and entertainment.
There are two stories in Kundun: one is the of the film itself, a sweeping, beautiful epic that tells the story of Tibet in the 1950's faithfully, including honesty about China's invasion and Mao's heavy-handed treatment of the Tibetan people. The other is of the business and politics that defined how Disney, one of the most powerful companies in the world, would enter the 21st century, and how China would exercise perpetual control over the global entertainment industry.
And the first step in fighting back is to watch the movie that Disney and China don't want you to see.

My friend in New York told me his uncle worked for the local Chinese government in Lhasa (Tibet). He is a Tibetan, somehow managed to get a hold of a old VSH tape of the film KUNDUN and watched it quietly. The Chinese government found out. They demoted him, took his family's ration card, and sentenced him to 3 years in prison plus 2 years of re-education. He even told me that having a picture of Dalai Lama could get you 5 years prison sentence. WOW!

"Sometimes the most revolutionary thing you can do is simply watch a movie they don't want you to see", reminds me of The Man in The High Castle book which was published in 1962 and a recurring theme is the Nazi regime's fear of people seeing alleged films that showcase a world where the Nazi lost to the allies. Now in real life we have China hell bent on preventing people from seeing a historical film of their involvement in atrocities against Tibet.

Kundun deeply impacted my life during high school. I thank our professor at the time for exposing us to it. The class was titled Comparing Religions. It was a difficult time in my life, my interest in spirituality was on the rise, and my best friend had taken his life during. The noble nature of the new Dalai Lama as he gained knowledge and the visions of war an peril impacting his spirit were revealing. The movie helped me reconnect to mourn my best friend when I watched it for a second time, two years later.

China's influence and control in our culture today is inescapable. Thanks to figures like Kissinger and Eisner. Mao, the consummate practicioner of identity politics, only referred to other communists as "the people". As he had divided Chinese society into multiple identity groups. Some Chinese were referred to simply as "the enemy".

After reinstating old policies and what could be true of forcing death to give back the souls of genuine evil warlords, we have to face the facts that this will now become a war for survival of the human species. We COULD all unite and get exactly the kind of world governments we deserve as the plebian class. Instead we will stay fractured, ignorant and lazy. A small hard choice now, or an impossible reality later? Humans seem to excessively choose impossible reality instead... the Iberians during the jihad into Spain, the people of China for CENTURIES. Arabic kingdoms then caliphates, england, Russia, Africa. It's madness everywhere and no plebs are banding together to peacefully demand propriety. The actual amount of internal rebellions against errant governments are few and far between, and most of the time it required widespread deprivation and madness. It HAS to be utter madness before anyone will react. Add onto that the modern comforts we would have to surrender? Also to contain the Soviet Union. Shifting the frontline from Taiwan Strait to "Sino"-Soviet border means the US did not need to get directly involved. Every time an American tells me (a Taiwanese) that they're willing to fight for Taiwan, my response is that "it's _your_ decision and subject to _your_ mood-swing". In fact in 1946 the Americans really thought Mao is a good man because the Japanese largely ignored his army during WWII.

Well done. Work like this is every bit as good as Out of Frame. I'm by no means a Scorsese super-fan, but I do really enjoy his movies - his earlier work especially. And you're right: I had no idea that he directed Kundan. I didn't even know it existed - a testament to how well Disney buried this movie. What a powerfully simple sentiment to end on: that merely looking at what tyrants don't want you to see is an act of rebellion.

Tibet before 1951 was like a combination of slave-era America and medieval Europe.Tibetans are like black slaves, even more miserable than black slaves. They were killed at will, and their bones and skins were made into playthings for monks and nobles.Tibetan Buddhism is cruel and bloody, using human organs, bones and blood for sacrifices. This is completely different from other Buddhisms that are peaceful and peaceful in the world.Monks even had sex with girls and fed their semen to their disciples as a form of spiritual practice.
