It tends to happen naturally, but in the case of Soylent Green, a worldwide cohort of intelligentsia, business leaders, and politicians are working hard to force science fiction to become reality.
The debate over global population growth and the threats it may pose to the sustainability of the planet and the human race overwhelmingly skews to one side: more people, more problems. And that seems to be the case in Soylent Green, based on Harry Harrison’s excellent novel “Make Room! Make Room!” -- the horrible consequences of population growth are unavoidable. Dennis Meadows, The Club of Rome, Paul Ehrlich, Greta Thunberg, and even commentators like Bill Maher are convinced that a drastic reduction in population… and some are comfortable with mandating that grim future at all human costs.
Buried deep in Soylent Green -- in both its story and the life of one of its actors -- is a message of hope and belief in our capacity to solve the problems that we ourselves might create to improve the human condition.

@@RoninTF2011 : That is a good question! And I certainly don't have all the answers, especially considering how many scientists are on various payrolls these days. But I think cleaning up our own mess, that is tackling pollution, and planting many more trees is a good plan anyway. And then we'll see if and how much that helps. It's more the hypocrisy, and especially the constant downplaying, that bothers me. There's too much division you know.

Well, the problem is that they're coming for your little piece of paradise! Mine too. I don't live in a city. I live somewhere peaceful on a private road with 50 acres of privately owned beautiful trees behind me and my own little plot of land. However, it is quite obvious that the powers that be are coming for us all so their corporations can buy up our land! Laws are changing everywhere, inflation & job loss on the rise. These are the facts. Big Corp OWNS government and they're determined to own EVERYTHING. People are not "paranoid" - they SEE what's happening all around them. It may take longer for them to get to people like you & me, but indeed they WILL if people do nothing. Acknowledging the problem is only the first step.

I remember when I was a kid, the terrifying bad guy was always one guy who wanted to rule the world. Used to be the subject if cartoons. The wanna be world dictator was the ultimate evil monster. That faded out in the 1960s and everybody was up in arms over civil rights. Our monster has found us because we forgot about him.

When I was a kid, my parents (boomers) railed against the types who thought to assign blame rather than face a problem. And now all these years later, it hasn't changed.

@@K1ng1995 I think that there are two reasons why people don't want to work anymore. the first is that they have been taught that their ambition is destructive and that anything they would have wanted to do will just burn electricity that they believe is a more finite resource than it actually is. The second is that because fewer people are being ambitious leaders, those who tend to be followers don't have anyone to inspire them to work for them.

Back when we had 2 billion people, we worried about things like this... and there is some merit. However, now with over 8 billion, there are fewer starving than there was then. This is because people forget that first, new people come up with new ideas (including how to feed more with the same farms); and second, that if you have no needs, you might never try to improve - indeed, necessity is the mother of invention, and contentment breeds complacency.

Never trust computer models. More often they output what the creator wants it to model than what reality would result in. We can't predict the weather more than a few days ahead, so how can we predict the entire world decades in the future? There are too many interacting variables and too much inherent unpredictability to make models of these complex systems that are our world.

I had a friend like that once. The economy was always about to collapse COMPLETELY within the next few weeks. After many years of this insistence, and it never happening, what blew my mind was that it never dampened his certainty that he was right "this time" one iota, EVER. In fact his certainty only increased the more his predictions failed to materialize. Now that is what you call "self confidence".

Resources are created by people: the more people, the more resources and the more surplus. Go to a place where there are no people and try to find anything to eat. The reason we have so much luxury is because of how many people there are creating and refining resources. The fewer people there are, the more hours you have to work in order to earn food, housing and clothing, and the worse the quality of those commodities become.

There is cheap land out there for you to buy. There is a place an hour drive from a major Midwestern city with hundreds of wooded five acre parcels you can buy for thousands of dollars. I'm not telling you where.

You know why elephants aren't extinct in Africa already? It's because they allowed private ownership in some places. And those are the places where elephant population is actually rising. People protect things they own. And people neglect and abuse things that everyone owns collectively. The 1% isn't the problem. Government is the problem.

First, father of six children here, married to their mother, my amazing wife, for 33 years. Their lives are better than mine, growing up, thank God(!), and I would not give up a single one of them in trade for the resources expended to raise them. I would, in fact, say the world is a better place for their presence in it. Secondly, I had wondered at the recent Vsauce videos that had come out, and now I know why I enjoyed them so greatly. We were stationed together in Germany, I appreciated her blunt honesty, and she grew to realize I wasn't just the "class clown" but also caring, smart, and loyal. We also have our negatives, and positives that are taken too far (like my humor). I would love to say we met in church, but that didn't develop until later. I'll just say the Lord protected us from ourselves...frequently at first, less so as we grew closer to Him. I not much to look at, and six pregnancies have taken a toll on my wife, but we are content, even happy, to grow old together, and so thankful for children and grandchildren. Don't expect sunshine and rainbows, share a bank account and put both your names on everything. Serve/love/lead your wife so well that she won't even consider life without you. The D word came up just once, thankfully, in our 33 years of marriage, when she was very frustrated with me.

The effect I've seen over my nearly 60 years is that the Powers That Be want a large population of mindless workers and a small population of people to manage them to support a handful of people that own everything. This means training the Middle Class to be largely incapable of reproduction, but not the lower class. People that live in apartments and work all the time make spend as they're told, and don't make trouble. It's people that own property and have leisure that can threaten The Ruling Class. There's something to the film Idiocracy, but it's no documentary. It's not about resources; it's about control.

It always give me so much hope when I begin to think of the small mountains, we each individually climb in our own lives. Imagine what we could accomplish together, even as families. We humans are resilient and smart, clearly not what the elites think in their big egos; We are engineers, scientists, architects, we think and philosophize, even down to farmers, welders, electricians, and plumbers. As long as humans have existed, we adapt and to think we wont adapt and climb over the most insurmountable mountains is crazy! We humans are incredible, we shaped the world and are its stewards, we both have saved creatures from extinction and made creatures disappear, we've built mountains and flattened them, we've built lakes from nothing and made seas disappear, we've grown entire forests and turned old forests into farms, we've thrived in inhospitable climates and built cities there; Hell we've even been to the moon, off of this world. Let optimistic humans be human and watch them thrive, the elites will never see it coming! Nihilists are my bane.

I'm a Chinese, when I was a kid, I used to think too much people with too little resource is the root of all problem. But when I learn more about economy and history, I realized there's always enough resource in the nature, it's just we human don't have enough knowledge or power to take it in our hand. And in order to do this, we need more educated free minded people to do that.😂

Agreed, everytime in history a problem came up, humans accidently or purposely got passed it. For example, back when we traveled by horse, there was a concern about the raise of horse manuer covering the streets. How eventually it would cause a lot of problems. But suddenly we discovered the car, and that problem went away. We keep doing this, and if these elites were as good and smart as they claimed. They would have known humanity would be fine, we are good at adapting.

The problem is containing people in a system where only 2% actually produce anything. 10 billion people would be no problem if 60% of those people produced food rather than being conditioned to be non-productive consumers. But the system maintains control by separating people from their own self-reliance. It is done intentionally. This requires synthetic food production systems that wreak havoc on the Earth and eventually fail.

I've always felt that the people arguing for population control are people who're in favour of either communist control or living under a dictator. Most people I know who've argued for it outright say so with no shame. I can't imagine anyone who believes in human ingenuity coming to the control conclusion that we'd have to cull the population. My dad in recent years has started on that path. He keeps apologizing to me and my siblings, saying that he thinks it's unfair that he brought us into a world that's set to collapse. It's so strange to hear that from a parent. He's old, I don't know if that has anything to do with it. But during the covid lockdown in Canada he became more steadfast in views, saying that it shows the government could take care us and manage the population. I really hated it, lol.
