I literally had that conversation with my half-brother when I was a little kid. I kept asking him what movie he was watching on TV, and when he told me, I thought he was telling me to "Shhhhhhhhhh!" This went on for far too long.

"Sssssss" was one of those early-1970s low budget genre movies made by Universal to launch young talent behind and in front of the camera, and to see what (and who) would stick with audiences. The same company policy that brought us "Silent Running" and "American Graffiti". "Sssssss" is actually a pretty well-made horror movie, directed by Bernard L. Kowalski - who made some of the best early episodes of Columbo.

My older bro went with an aunt to a carnival in Flagstaff in the early 70s. My aunt entered a large tent to see the curiosities show. My brother had to wait outside. He heard it announced that they had a centaur then all of a sudden the crowd inside started screaming. People ran out and some even crawled out from under the canvas wall. My aunt was one of them. She grabbed my brother by the hand and said, "Lets go, we're leaving!". He tried to ask her what was going on but she rushed him to the parking lot, got him into the pickup and drove away. Allegedly none of the snakes were defanged and none were harmed during the venom milking scene so...maybe sedated (or even a dethawed separate boa from Harry's actor entirely since large frozen snakes are a very common food to give to captive king cobras, which of course this film had a lot of, as in the wild their natural prey would consist of pythons)? Then again, other reptile experts say that the snakes weren't kept in the best condition and also the scene where the guy gets bit by the mamba was 100% real and they applied antivenom after the shot, and if the human actors are being risked so much, then the snakes might be risked even moreso, so maybe not... Sources regarding this movie's treatment of the snakes are dodgy and I can't find anything clear.

Both the freakshow and gogo dancers are pretty accurate for what you could find at the carnival back in the days. Maybe not in the -70s though, but much earlier. It's more like the director added stuff he'd think was common in the carnival, based on what might've been common from stories he heard as a child.

Also a lot of the 'freaks' now are different by choice - where in the old days it was folks with genetic defects and other conditions they couldn't change, a lot of the 'freaks' now have chosen full-body tattoos, extreme body modification etc., and/or they've mastered a 'freakish' skill like contortion, sword-swallowing, etc.
