Personal opinion: don’t court order children to spend time with people they’re uncomfortable with; it just seems so obvious 😭
@coyoter9691
@coyoter9691 2 жыл бұрын
I know, that seems so cruel. Even if there isn't a threat of abuse or murder, I would think it would be very psychologically damaging to force a child to be around someone they are scared of or uncomfortable with. The well-being of the child should always be paramount in these decisions, not just the feelings of the parents.

I agree but it get complicated when parents lie to children to make them think the other parent is wrong or evil. It happens all the time.
@MK-Hogan

Kids need to be listened to and it should be investigated when they don’t want to visit the other parent. However, it’s not that simple because it could be the rotten parent that’s successful in alienating them from the good parent. Then you have a case of the kid being removed from the good parent who now has no chance of maintaining that relationship. It gets messy. It should definitely be investigated though.

@@coyoter9691 as a kid who was forced to go through it, yes it is extremely damaging. I had debilitating anxiety, extreme social issues, depression, and suicidal tendencies that I still struggle with years after that situation ended. I don’t think any child or any person should ever have to go through that. This case proves that not only is it detrimental to the child’s health but also a danger to their safety and their life.

We need "Dylan's Law" - a law that protects children who voice their opinion that they don't wish to spend time with a parent, who may be abusive. Dylan didn't want to spend time with his Dad. If Dylan would have been allowed freedom of choice not to visit his Dad, he would possibly still be alive!!!

I agree. When my kids didn't want to go with their dad (I had found out so much during our divorce the kids never told me) I kept them in the house even though my lawyer told me I would be violating the court order and could be taken to jail... Take me to jail. My kids are not going. They are older now and still have nothing to do with him. This really does need to be a law.

@@nicoledoubleyou I agree, because I’ve been in that exact position at the 11-12 years of age myself. Also another factor can be which ever parents home is still their original home, same neighbourhood friends, same school. Kids don’t like change either. Sometimes it’s which ever parent will let them do whatever they want, or get away with what they want, or gives them whatever they want. If the parents aren’t co-parenting well, children aren’t as naive and stupid as people think sometimes they learn to use/manipulate their parents too!

That makes absolutely no logical sense! There should be no contact at all, if the child does not agree to it. If they later on, actually & for real, want to have contact to that parent again, for whatever reason, guess what - they can STILL change their mind but didn't have to go through all that additional trauma ffs.. Gaaah the way kids are treated & endagered like that just makes me sick & angry..

AFAIK, the one case of another country granting asylum to a US citizen was a mother running from an insanely abusive ex with her children. She'd lost all rights to them BECAUSE SHE HAD BEEN ABUSED BY THE EX. Not because she stayed in an abusive situation. Not because she didn't protect her children. Not because they saw the abuse. Because she had been abused.

Social worker in CO here, unfortunately this would be difficult to accomplish. Parents have visitation rights according most states statutes and even though there are definitely concerning parents out there, a state can’t withhold that right unless the parent has displayed ongoing instability or violence. It’s not a perfect system at all but if the courts allowed children to decide under any circumstance, there would be many parents who don’t get to see their kid’s for unjust reasons like: “Sally said her dad doesn’t let her stay up late so she refuses to go”. They definitely need to look into cases one by one, but the system is too underfunded :(

What made it even more evident is that he then proceeded to speak about Dylan as if he were alive. It's like he forgot he was supposed to talk about Dylan in the present tense at the beginning, because he was talking about whether or not he killed Dylan. Saying he would never kill Dylan he WAS the light of his life and that he MEANT everything to him. He was speaking about him as if he was dead. But then when he moves on to the next question or whatever, he switches to using present tense as if he is then trying to keep up the assumptions that Dylan is alive.

Except that's not how it happened. There was no indication - to the court - that the father was unstable or violent. It's very easy to make this strawman argument in hindsight but the fact of the matter is in the majority of cases children don't turn up dead. Often there can be bad blood because of a messy divorce which biases children towards one parent or the other and has reflects in no way on their parenting skills/love of their child and the child goes on to have a positive relationship with both parents. Also you're forgetting that often in situations like this one parent can poison the child against the other. Then there are other considerations, does the child not want to visit the other parent for superficial reasons? (maybe one parent is wealthier and has more 'fun' things like computer games/cars/pools etc). What if one parent is just stricter and the other lets them get away with bad behaviour? It's a complicated issue.

I know he was 18 but if he was living with the mom she should have absolutely forced him to go or at the very least stay in town. The mother quite frankly should have flown out as well and stayed somewhere else. This whole situation was a mess from the start. The brother not going is so disrespectful. I wish that for kids who didn't want to see a parent, that judges would take this into account. I understand that parents may try to bias their child against the other parent to try to get sole custody, but if a child says they don't want to go then it should be supervised visits instead of sending the child alone (especially if said parent has a history of abuse). Boggles my mind that kids are so ignored in favour of the parents when the kids are the most vulnerable of the two.

It’s such an odd feeling when hearing about a victim who was born the same year as you. When I was 12/13, I had a completely different life that I am so grateful for to this day, meanwhile at the same time, this poor boy was brutally killed by his own father. After all I’ve been through since my early teen years, it makes me so sad he didn’t get to go to high school, college, or do all the fun things teenagers and young adults do. Rest In Peace Dylan!

Clear Blue I was thinking the same thing. I kind of thought it was shitty that he didn’t go at the beginning of the video but then I kept telling myself that he could never have predicted that it would end so tragically. However, it really bothered me when it was revealed that he was the one that found the pictures on his dads laptop and then showed Dylan. Obviously that made him hate his dad more and he chose not to go see him. I think it’s sad that despite knowing these things he didn’t feel protective enough of his brother and just let him go by himself. I know it’s not his brothers fault. I really do but I find it sad that he Dylan ended up there alone.

@@Weadessewell obviously any of these situations are incredible tragic. understanding that no one could’ve changed anything is the first step is actual grief for the family. and when random people following the case put out hateful comments blaming family members. it’s stupid. blame the man that murdered it son. you were being respectful i apologize for getting heated lol but i had something like this happen in my family and blame shifting will mess people up mentally.

Even my brother in the past, we would talk shit about our parents whenever we were upset with them. They are kids and siblings, and that’s exactly what they were acting like by sharing those photos and trashing their bum of a dad. You have hindsight on your side and zero involvement with the family members, so it’s easy for you to get on your high horse and act like you’d do things differently. Not just you, but many people on here trying to act like Corey is somehow to blame at all. Disrespectful af.
