Today I wanted to talk about the case I am always asked to do the most, the unsolved mystery of Elizabeth Short, also known as the Black Dahlia. The story is just so sad and it's a bummer this one may never be fully solved. There are so many theories and things I left out just to give a more simplified version but overall I would love to hear your theories and input!

Personal creepy fact: Elizabeth Short’s body was found 2 blocks away from my first apartment. My elderly landlord told me about it and cautioned me be careful when I went out with my friends. He asked me to leave my porch light on when I went out and turn it off when I got home so that he’d know that I had returned. Today that sounds kind of creepy, but I got a grandfatherly vibe. Sweet man, bless his heart.

I came here to say the same thing. This is one of the most disgusting things I’ve heard-and there are a LOT of horrendous details about this case. It’s absolutely tragic. The police didn’t call Phoebe…the reporters got what info they wanted and then dropped this on her.

I'm late but when George Hodel went to the Philippines, we had a case in 1950-1960's where Lucila Lalu was also killed and dismembered. Some also suspects him but there were no evidence. She was the "first chop chop lady" in the philippines and I hope she can be covered too.

Yea I just ruined my day. I’m grateful it’s in black and white cause it somehow makes it less intense. I don’t know how my brain is just accepting her being *cut in half* but I’m most freaked out by how she’s splayed out on the ground (like her legs are wonky and it freaks me out), and the cuts in her face (I have always been incredibly freaked out by the Glasgow smile). Don’t ask me how my brain works cause I wouldn’t be able to tell you.

The ME who performed the autopsy was very specific about her being surgically bisected. He said that only a well trained and experienced doctor with a scalpel would have been able to execute this bisection... This doctor bisected the corpse by cutting a spinal disk in half, and the ME said this was a most difficult and expertly executed operation, and implied that whoever bisected the disk had done so before, indicating previous experience. The ME was very disturbed by this knowledge.

george hodel was not a suspect till after his death, his son, steve hodel was going through his stuff after his death and found a photo album, at first it was normal until the last 2 photos, which were 2 pictures of elizabeth, then george, his handwriting matched the letters sent to the police. edit: Steve Hodel, George’s son, is a retired detective and went into this case heavily

That episode was super uncomfortable especially knowing the full story of what happened to her. It felt extremely disrespectful to an actual victim, where a lot of the other depictions merely mocked killers and fake victims as opposed to a real person who suffered something so horrible. Ok maybe Red was the person on the other end of the line when George was discussing about shutting the woman up with a pillow. Maybe Red and George were sickening accomplices. Back in those days, they could have talked on the phone all day long and there was no way to track the caller if I'm not mistaken. And, no cell phones to track movement. They could have worked together under the cover of darkness only.

You should cover the 7 indigenous students that attended high school in Thunder Bay, ON, whom left their home towns, that were found deceased. There’s a book written by Tanya Tagala with the title of “Seven Fallen Feathers”, it’s very heartbreaking because I have met 2 people that are mentioned in the book. please, there’s needs to be more awareness about the discrimination, systematic racism, and injustice against the indigenous community within Canada’s walls.

I always had the belief that the Doctor was involved but that it was more so that this happened at one of his "parties." Like she was the "attraction" and he allowed his guests to do whatever they wanted. Which is why so many different things were done to her body, like the hair, face, and tic tac toe game.

Yup, I agree. Knowing how to cut her body in that way--George's son describes it in much more detail in his book and explains how his father's surgical experience would've taught him how to cut like that--means someone who was a surgeon and knew their way around a body had to have done it. None of the other people who confessed had that kind of knowledge.

A cool fact about the Elizabeth Short case is that she was identified very quickly (less than an hour I believe) after the FBI received her fingerprints from LA via a very early form of a fax machine, called a SoundPhoto. It was the first police investigation that used SoundPhoto, which was up to that point, just used by the news media.

The only reason I found out about the black dahlia case is because of American horror story and I was so confused about who Elizabeth short was (I'm not from America) then I found about black dahlia case being a true case. @@XavierVB i don't think that's exactly what this person's implying, though many people have theories about the Cecil Hotel because of it's long and shady history. I think this person was just stating an interesting fact. While I don't personally think there's a connection between the cases (in my opinion it's just a budget hotel that draws in criminals), I would definitely recommend researching in to the sheer amount of violent crimes there.

Elizabeth wasn’t just “cut” in half she was “Surgically Bisected” and George Hodel was the ONLY doctor in the area that could do that kind of procedure in the way that it was done and that had relations with Elizabeth, and don’t forget the surveillance footage that was found showing Elizabeth leaving a hotel with a man matching the description of George the night before she disappeared. I REST MY CASE!

This case will stick with me forever I have heard it so many times and still gives me chills. At first I did not believe this when I found out about it a long time ago so I typed it in on the internet and looked at images and I will never forget what the crime scene looked like. I would say this case as well as the Jeffrey Dahmer case I will never forget ever.

On watching other stuff on this it seems they had conflicting interests. He was expecting a live in maid/make shift house wife. But she wanted to better herself meet a partner etc, so was going out instead of doing chores. My theory is he was heavily intoxicated and miffed so wasn't in the mindset to understand the gravity of the situation. I did think it was weird though

The book Steve Hodel (George Hodel’s son) wrote is called the Black Dahlia Avenger. There are pictures of the letters and other damning information. I loved the podcast too. Root of Evil is an amazing account of the crime from the Hodel family. If ya’ll liked that. Steve’s book is totally worth checking out.
