I think Rarru is a descendant of Gaepora, and then their bloodline or “spirit” reincarnates as Kaepora Gaebora, the owl. So Gaepora helps establish the kingdom of Hyrule after Skyward Sword, then dies later on, then Rarru is born as a descendant of him, and finishes the work of Gaepora, and builds the Temple of Time and Light.

There are some logical gymnastics and omissions of evidence that contradicts the theory completely. All of the king type characters share similar designs and traits, it is much more likely that they are spiritual reincarnations of each other, the same goes for several other characters like Impa.

I've never really thought the Zelda timeline was confusing. Dependent on information not given in the games for sure. But not confusing.

I like this theory. Even if the two aren't one in the same person, it still gives credence to the whole cycle of rebirth and chosen descendants theme in the lore. And like the wiki says, I think it's already widely accepted that his owl form is more or less his physical avatar during the events of OoT. Another point to support that is in the game you meet every other sage in both child and adult timelines. In a gameplay perspective, both young Link and the player were probably more comfortable with an owl approaching/following them around to offer advice than some chubby old wizard.

My thought on raru and the headmaster was that they were relatives, like great grandfather/grandson, mainly because I thought that the building of the temple of time occurred close to or longer than a century after skyward sword

This is one of those theories that I’ve never even thought of, but when I see it, it makes too much sense not to be correct.

This is one of the more inane Zelda theories I’ve seen recently. Gaepora was clearly designed to be a reference to Rauru/Kaepora Gaebora. Maybe Rauru was meant to be his descendant or reincarnation, but that’s almost certainly the closest the connection comes. It is sort of like how we also see someone in Skyward Sword that resembles the Happy Mask Salesman, and we also have Beedle in that game.

I’ve always headcanoned that Rauru could be a descendant (maybe even the son???) of Link and Zelda from Skyward Sword, and the similarities between Gaebora and Rauru could be like how some people look a lot like their grandparents (even my own father is like that with his own *great*- grandfather!)

Man, THIS takes me back; I remember telling Zelda fans this kind of thing several years ago only to be met with "their designs are too different". Taking a look at Ganondorf between Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess, using their logic, those three Ganondorfs cannot be the same character, and yet we know for a fact that they are. Design really isn't a HUGE factor in making connections. It can help in making connections, indeed, but slight differences like those between Rauru and Gaepora don't "break" or "bust" a theory because design is really up to the whim of the developers. Gaepora started as the chosen Lorekeeper of Skyloft, they were charged with learning the legends passed down by the Goddesses which were announcing the chosen knight and passing them down, the next in the line was going to be Zelda and she already know some of them yet she is mistaking them for legends of the past rather than intructions for the futur and thought there was another chosen knight the Goddess gave her shawl but she was actually fulfilling the legend herself. The reason Gaepora created the Knight Academy 25 years ago was essentially to prepare the chosen knight of the Goddess for his mission. By this action, Gaepora revived the ancient arts of the sword which not even their ancestors were mastering correctly living in the long era of peace brought by the faith into the Goddess which resulted in them being almost massacred by the demons. Those ancient arts were taught to the Knights and finally Link, the chosen one. After the conflict finished and the surface opened, the Knights of Skyloft became essential for the lives of those that went down forming the colony that would become the Kingdom of Hyrule. With the passing years, seen as nobility, they would only marry one-another and form a bloodline, the descendants of the first Hero, the Knights of Hyrule. This would make Gaepora the indirect founder of the Knights of Hyrule. It is my believe that he was chosen by the gods, who saw him as an ancient sage as told by the Gossip Stone, for another mission and was reincarnated as the owl Kaepora Gaebora with the mission of watching over the Hero and guiding him in his hours of need. He is depicted on the Hero's Shield which Link somehow obtained prior to Majora's Mask, thus, his association with the Hero is known by some. During the prophecy of the Hero of Time, he knew who Link was and guided him but admitted that he had some disbelief of the legend. There is the matter of Termina, in Termina he was waiting for the arrival of the one that will save this land, which was Link. In FSA, he helped the Hero during his quest again. He inspired the owl of the Wind Fish, perhaps the two of them met in the past? There are also owl statues scattered in Holodrum and Labrynna that gain life when recieving a Mystery Seed/Hatena Nut. (ハテナ is close to アテナ Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom and strategy which symbol is the Owl.) Kaepora Gaebora might be the one to have birthed the Rito Tribe we see in FSA, explaining why Kaneli is so similar to him. I guess he fell in love with some member of the Wind Tribe/Oocca and created the first true Rito. And no, screw HH, he has no relations with Rauru.

Great theory, love you videos! One thing I'd say is that the "We sages" doesn't necessarily mean him specifically, but the group that he is a part of. For example, if I said, "On July 4th 1776, we Americans declared our independence." I'm not referring to myself specifically. Not to say I disagree with your theory as a whole, I do think there is supposed to be at least some connection, whether or not they're the same person. (Btw, I know congress actually voted to declare independence on July 2nd, because SOMEBODY will correct me I'm sure).

In cases like this I like to imagine that these characters are reincarnations, just like Link and Zelda. There must be more people affected by Demise's curse, just think of Impa. And it would make sense that these people are close to either Link or Zelda.

5:15 you know many people say Kaepora Gaebora is very annoying, because he always follows Link mostly in the child timeline, and he asks you if Link wants to hear what he said before. Kaepora Gaebora doesn't look annoying to me, but some people do. See: players of Ocarina of time ( example: Zelda Master and more).

Rauru is sage of Light in Ocarina of Time, but I like to theorize he was actually the son of Skyward Sword Link and Zelda after they settled on the surface. Before they established Hyrule as a kingdom, with their son Rauru inheriting his mother's powers. A war broke out with the Interlopers, with Rauru being the next to protect the triforce sealed himself away in the same temple grounds his father once stood, and for him to allow his daughter to become Queen Zelda upon Hyrule's rise to establishing their kingdom and alliance with the ancient shekaih. This is my personal fun theory that I like to add to the already existing story, especially since at the end of Skyward Sword Impa stayed long enough to see Link and Zelda be happy. With Twilight Princess already having showing that in the child timeline the hero of time is the next sage of light, until he passes it on to Midna. Not by choice as I think that was a back-up plan that was made by Farore in the act that Hylia's plan were to fail, with Midna guarding either a piece or a part of the triforce of wisdom. As to why in Botw Zelda wasn't able to call on her powers, besides not having her mother to teach her. My theory for Rauru maybe off, but it makes my playthrough of Ocarina of time little better, since my theories are based on my personal experiences with the games. I've not read the Hyrule Historia. ^-^ Thank you for reading my little ramble.

At 6:48, there's the art of the KaeGae with his head upside down. Well take Gaepora's head and turn it upside down. His chinhair becomes Rauru's ponytail, eyebrows become the mustache, etc. The thing to remember is that these are all the "legends" that are passed down, so the details might not exactly line up. It's the same with Jabu Jabu from Ocarina becoming Jabun from Wind Waker. He didn't really change his name, its just a different version of the legend. That said, I would like for KaeGae to be a different character than Rauru, just because it would've been so easy to include a little scene where Link is in the sage room alone, he hears wings flapping and looks above, and KaeGae descends to his position and blinding bright light, and bam there's Rauru. I'd think that if they were the same character it would've been explained, but I very well could be wrong.

I also noticed how rauru and gaepora have similar designs on their chest with rauru having a more subtle curve with a line through it and gaepora having a less subtle gold piece but I think the connection is still there

Most of the residents of Skyloft have an avian theme to their name and design. Stritch is tall and thin like an ostrich, Batreaux is like a bat, Groose struts around like a goose, etc. This is noted in Skyward Sword concept art portion of Hyrule Historia. Owls are commonly seen as wise, which is likely why Kaneli, the Rito Village Elder in Breath of the Wild, is designed like one. Similarly, Gaepora is also seen as the elder or leader of his time. When you add in him being the headmaster of a school (teachers in cartoons often are or resemble owls), it only makes sense that he resembles and references the most famous owl in Zelda history.

I've always liked to think Rauru was simply a descendant of Gaepora, which also makes him a descendant of Zelda. My theory is that he is the king's brother. He takes on the form of Kaepora Gaebora so that he can remain in the sacred realm and protect it (he probably can't leave anyway). I like to think the owl's appearance in other games is either the current sage of light, who has adopted this ability as the primary protector of the sacred realm, or it is Rauru himself, as the sacred realm exists outside of time itself. I like your theory, but I personally think it makes more sense for the two of them to simply be of the same bloodline (also explains the similar features in the many kings of Hyrule we see throughout the series). Just my theory. Great video!

Personal theory of mine is that Rauru is the son of Zelda and Link in Skyward sword. It would make sense that if the bloodline of the goddess, or Zelda, prioritizes the first born as a ruler or a female as the possible reincarnation of the goddess, that means there could be children who find different purposes, such as being a sage or being an architect to house the Sacred Realm and the Triforce. This would explain the similarities between Rauru and Gaepora while having obvious differences, such as name and slight character design.

I once saw a Zelda fan movie called "Legend of Link" on KZfaq (very old like 2006) and in one of the episodes, Kaepora Gaebora keeps repeating himself to Link, so Link calls Tingle and Tingle kills the owl with a super scope gun like the ones in the Smash Bros games. Tingle also kills Navi with a baseball bat, also parodied from Smash Bros. That film is full of fight scenes and also funny jokes lol. Honestly very well made and shot for it's time.

At the very least they're connected in that tha Rauru knew or knew of Gaepora and looked up to him. The problem is that the timeline really doesn't say how much time takes place between events. The only amount of time specified that I remember is the 7 years that Link is in hibernation, or whatever you want to call it, while Ganondorf accumulates his power and more or less takes over the world. Even games that specify direct connections to other games never really get very specific just 'monthes' or 'he's a blood descendant'. So Rauru could easily be a descendant of Gaepora and ancestor of the King at the time of OoT.

Depending on species owls DO have something like Gwbora's eyebrows. Thow they're actually tufts on either side of the head. That particular set of plumage often gives the apperance of eyebrows however and was the inspiration for the design of Noctowl which has "eyebrows" identical to Gaebora's.

The first time I heard someone suggest this I thought it was ridiculous since had never made the connection over the years. However it does all seem to fit and it's actually quite obvious when you lay it all out.

This actually makes a lot of sense. I didn't know if there was actually any debate that he wasn't reincarnated as the owl, though it makes sense because he is the oldest sage and probably the most knowledgeable. It's also good symbolism that owls usually depict wisdom.

You forgot about the owl from Link's Awakening, I think it should be considered in this. It has a very similar appearance from Ocarina of Time, just something to think about.

I can't remember very well where, but I read the "story of Rauru" since he was younger and create the Temple of Time between Minish Cap and Ocarina of Time. OH Oh! and I have a theory about the Skyloft People becoming birds or at least reencarnate. Kaeopa is just a few examples, but the Wind Tribe in Minish Cap may evolve into the Oocas a weird mix of people and birds, and, that maybe would evolve into the Rito Tribe in BotW and that is why they are more bird-like than Wind Waker's (Remember they have an actual OWL headmaster on their town)

In botw, at kaepora pass, if u look at the map, it makes the owls face, akkala falls is the beak, great fairy fountain is the eye, and the eyebrow stops just before rist peninsula, ull have to turn the switch right side up left side down to see it

Ok. Let me present this. Kaepora Gaebora is NOT Rauru. Rauru is more than likely Zelda’s dead father (who died after Ganondorf betrayed him) which is why he exists only in the adult timeline. However Kaepora Gaebora is ACTUALLY the Spirit of Link from Skywards Sword. Let me explain: 1. Kaepora Gaebora definition is derived from the Hebrew words Atonement and Hero. Somewhat like Vegeta. I believe after Link descends to the land of Hyrule, he fiercely defends the triforce from Skyloftians and Interlopers. His spirit guarding these, which is why no other link previously had it, more than likely DESTROYED these people. - Also making him the Fierce Deity. 2. Kaepora Gaebora appears to Link much like how OOT Link appears to TP Link. The only exception is that Kaepora Gaebora provides mental tips whereas OOT Link provides physical tips. Probably because KG was fierce. His training would probably kill OOT Link. 3. I said he was the spirit of Link. Meaning he was probably reincarnated. The link in OOT was awaken more than likely a blood line hero from Minish Cap and Four Swords. He just wasn’t realized until afterwards. If SS Link was reincarnated as an animal it would be of a bird. 4. What was SS Link’s wish? To protect the new world from demise meaning he would have to protect the triforce and the master sword. This probably made him fierce. He probably died at these moments. Happy mask salesman turned his soul into a mask. Majora suggests that Link and Majora play Good GUYS vs Bad GUYS which gave rest to their sins. In Majora’s mask, the two times we see KG, he 1) teaches you the song that teleports you to places and 2) leads you to the lens of truth. This is probably because you’re helping him right his wrongs. Now Majora’s truth is that he was probably a not worthy Link or imposter (as suggested in triforce hero’s) that was killed fiercely by SS Link. As was the other 20 people on the moon.

i like to think that zelda's dad awakened as a sage and kept going, and the guy, rauru that we meet in OoT is actually the headmaster of the knights academy from SS, unlikely but i really like to think of it that way.

I love these videos. But I honestly think that the developers did not put as much attention to detail as we normally believe they do. Concerning Nintendo and specially Zelda, I seriously believe these to be a case of "lol, lets make look like because we can" rather than actually having a foundation for it. Just look at all the unexplained stuff that we are left to guess.

...uh yeah I don't like to trounce on peoples theories but there's at least a hundred years between the end of SS and the building of the Temple of Time as there's the whole of the Era of Chaos which includes the Interloper War. I could see Rauru being a descendent of Geapora using his a play on Geaporas name as an alter ego when in Owl form, but unless Geapora lived to be like ~280 years old at least than they're 100% not the same person.

Maybe the owls upside down face is a clue too. Gaepora has epic eyebrows, the owl has epic eyebrows. Raoru has an epic mustache, the owls upside down face has an epic mustache.

I have the feeling that the more botw secrets we find the more we may realize that it maybe placed in the wrong place on the timeline. For me there are a lot of relations to skyward sword in botw and the whole rito being the loftwings are another one. Here me out on this What I'm thinkin is that breath of the wild takes place 10,000 years after skyward sword and what we see is the first instance of incarnation but was interrupted mid way. Proof: •Hylia is mentioned (other than lake hylia she is never mentioned in OoT) •Fi returns •The breach of demise •The forgotten temple being the sealed temple •Loftwings being the rito •The two springs are in semi good condition(earth and skyview) the third spring could be an unseen one in skyward sword •Shiekah are alive (despite most of them being killed in OoT) •The eldin province is the same spot as skyward sword •Eldin great skeleton being levias •The loftwing carvings seen throughout the faron region •The great deku tree in OoT could be the decendant of the great deku tree in botw •malice reviving enemies •the bird statues seen in the final cutscene in champions ballad

I always thought this as well! The only thing that throws it for me is Gaepora being Zelda's father. My only solutions are: 1) that's a lie and he isn't really her father, but a guardian instead 2) The goddesses assigned Zelda a new father figure after Rauru became locked forever as the light sage or 3) The father figure doesn't reincarnate and the name Bosphorous (or however you spell it) was passed down after the fact and really isn't all that important in the same way that, say, the name Impa is.

It is confirmed in the Zelda Encyclopedia (although, the Encyclopedia and the Hyrule Historia are known for their inaccuracies) that Kaepora Gaebora and Rauru in Ocarina of Time was in fact the same person. The Hyrule Historia also states that the events of Skyward Sword took place long before Rauru existed, however, it could be that Rauru is the descendant of Headmaster Gaepora and the visual similarities between Kaepora Gaebora and Headmaster Gaebora hint at that being true. I think it would be really cool if the Nintendo Development Team decided to design a game that bridges the gap between Skyward Sword and Ocarina of Time - they could solve old mysteries and create new ones.

I was just under the assumption that most of the sages of light had some connection or lineage. Given that the King of Hyrule in games like BotW and WW also look a bit like them, imo.

It's obvious that they're connected, but it's also fair to say that Rauru could be Gaepora's reincarnation or descendent, maybe even both. Gaepora could have still become a sage, and maybe even passed on his attire to his successors, much like how the green tunic was the signature look for the many Links. This would explain why Rauru is dressed so similarly, but is still his own person rather than directly being the exact person from Skyward Sword.

Kaepora's head when contorted upside-down, the brow becomes reminiscent of a mustache that reminds you of Rauru's. Rauru is Gaepora. My thought is; After the events of Skyward Sword, Gaepora lived out his life as normal (Hylian normal) and just prior to his death, the goddesses chose him to become a Sage. And do to the ascension Gaepora had to either chose a new name or was given one for the purposes of the sacred realm. Now the reason for the name change can be attributed to one of two things. Either it was given to further enlighten his role as a Sage or it could have also been away to protect his descendants for fear of them becoming being looked at as true gods. I know the name Zelda is passed on partly because of tradition and there is some sort of blood relationship between Hylia and hierarchy of Zelda's family. Gaepora just did not want the family to ride the coattails of his ascension, but to earn the love and respect of the land of Hyrule and it's kingdom as it did in the past before he left the physical realm.
