The Kyushu Shinkansen Western Kyushu Route, a.k.a. the Nagasaki Shinkansen plans to open in the fall, 2022.
*When I made this video, the Nagasaki Shinkansen was expected to open by the spring of 2023. I mentioned it many times in this video. But JR Kyushu announced on September 25th, 2020 that this Shinkansen will open in the fall, 2022.
The travel time will be faster but it will be a bit inconvenient. I explained the reason in this video:
0:00 Introduction
1:38 Financial burden of local governments on new Shinkansen construction
2:33 Business separation from JR of conventional line operated in parallel with the Shinkansen route
4:46 History of the construction of the Nagasaki Shinkansen
10:27 The current situation
11:25 The future of the Nagasaki Shinkansen

Thank you for the very informative video. In Spain 1435 mm is used for High Speed whilst 1668 mm is used for the conventional track (so the trains should be swapped in the drawing at 9:20). I think that a very convenient and cheap solution would be improving the traditional track between Saga and Nagasaki (more straight tracks, more tunnels...) instead of building a Shinkansen with bogies that change width, which is very complicated and expensive. Between Hakata and Saga the air distance is not so higher in respect of Saga and Nagasaki so it is a problem of too slow infrastructure rather than a necessity of the Shinkansen issue.

ya, i thought similar. probably adding a 3rd rail or something to the traditional track will be much easier and cheaper.

Another great video really showing the development pressures on the Saga Prefecture to get that Shinkansen up and running. A bit of a shame that each prefecture is taking such a local view, rather than a broader Kyushu view.

You can't really blame the local government completely. Building the shinkansen is such a capital intensive project that not many local government can afford it, especially smaller prefecture like Saga. The central government should have ponied up more money to help the local government since, as you already mentioned that, it is beneficial to the broader Kyushu area, not just Saga.

A great video to show the challenges of building a new bullet train line in Japan. As a train travel lover, I wish the full construction is completed and its operation starts soon, however, the huge construction costs are always the problem. I totally understand Saga prefectures does not want to accept the costs in this particular case. Probably the central government, not local governments, should owe the costs in such cases, but Japanese government has historically owed huge debts, and it is not possible. It looks there is no way out...

Thank you for the detailed explanation 1) Takeo-Onsen, what an odd station to choose as a transfer station. 2) The trains in Kyushu are rarely at capacity (except for holidays). I'm not sure how they will make a profit *(just my observation)

Thanks for your comment. Actually it's a long story and complicated about selecting Takeo Onsen. 1. The first route of the Nagasaki Shinkansen was through Sasebo. In 1978, when Sasebo Port accepted the repair of a nuclear ship, a political deal was made to have the Shinkansen built. In the actual Shinkansen construction, passing through Sasebo would be a detour, so as a compromise, Takeo Onsen, which is close to Sasebo and can be transferred to a conventional line, was selected. I didn't include it in the video because this story will be long. 2. It is hard to make a profit at this point now. But if it connects with the Kyushu Shinkansen, Nagasaki is connected with Osaka, Kobe. Many passengers will shift from an aircraft to the Shinkansen between Kansai area and Nagasaki. That is why Nagasaki really want to build the Shinkansen in Saga.

Hello! Thanks for the video! I am making a documentary about the entire history on the Shinkansen and I was trying to get information about the mini Shinkansen and Nagasaki route. I found your video really helpful! There was a similar situation in the 1980s when the Tohoku line didn't start at Tokyo or even Ueno station but Omiya. They also had to do a relay run for that before it linked to Ueno and ultimately Tokyo station. I also had my question I was looking for about the E8 on why it was 300 KPH. I find your videos extremely useful for this. However, I also frequent your website and have even asked a few questions regarding the Seto Sunrise. I was wondering if it is possible to cite you or some of your citations on my Shinkansen documentary. I would love to share what I have so far. I appreciate the videos regarding the Shinkansen! Nico

Nagasaki could make a 3 rail track palatable to the Saga province, like the seikan tunnel. Then the Shinkansen could use conventional routes and take over the old stops of the Limited Express trains.

I went to Nagasaki in 2017 and could see some of the construction on the way to Huis Ten Bosch. I am pleased it is projected as early as 2022. It's not perfect that it is not a full length Shinkansen but it's still an improvement on current journey times. I think of it as similar to the classic compatible trains which will be in operation on Britain's future HS2 network.

One side will have to compromise in this and I am of the opinion that dual-gauging the conventional mainline between Shin-Tosu and Takeo-onsen would be the best option. Couldn't an existing type of mini-shinkansen train be used here?

Japan should contact with Switzerland, they have a 1.000mm 1.435mm trainset that is currently under testing, Spain has more or less the same policy than JR - Japan Government, we are building a lot of high speed lines and the conventional lines are dying... Japan has an excellent narrow gauge railway system, they probably should modify conventional lines to make speeds of 140kms/160kms/h, there are some cases that the building of a new high speed line is not justified, I'm guessing that this is one of those cases...

The distance-based method of cost sharing kinda suck for Saga's case. I understand the cost concern but I'm also puzzled as their local government is promoting tourism in other countries a lot. They even sponsored a show on CNN featuring a Ms. Universe.

Has there been any discussion of the Saga Prefecture section being dual-gauged or operating more like the mini-shinkansen lines in order to keep construction costs down while still allowing transfer-free travel to Fukuoka and Osaka? The gauge change train seems like a fine idea if you can make it work, but if they continue to have trouble with the development, I wonder if other options would be better. Relay train service seems like it would really dampen ridership.

JR Kyushu refuses to introduce the Mini Shinkansen. The reason is the cost of changing the track in Saga prefecture, the development cost for introducing a new rolling stock, and the cost for subsequent maintenance. Since the Mini-Shinkansen trains are completely different from other Kyushu Shinkansen trains, the maintenance method is also completely different. There is no cost to change the gauge with the introduction of Guage Changable Train, but the maintenance problem is the same, and for that reason JR Kyushu eventually gave up. Even in Saga Prefecture, the situation is changing recently because there is an opinion in the parliament that the Shinkansen should be introduced and it is in conflict with the governor.

If Saga does not want to bear the cost of constructing a full sized shinkansen, why not convert the conventional line to a mini shinkansen? The cost is going to be lower than building a new line and we can still ride to Nagasaki without changing train.

Why does JR Kyushu have to sell the parallel conventional line? Is it just that they're allowed to abandon it if they don't need it and so they will? I'm thinking of many cases where there is still a parallel conventional line operated by JR. For example the Tokaido Main Line and the San'yo Main Line still exist and are still under JR. Of course they are still extremely valuable and maybe that's why.
@JPRailcom
@JPRailcom 3 жыл бұрын
The conditions for Shinkansen construction are completely different between the time of the Japanese National Railways and the present of JR. Tokaido Shinkansen, Sanyo Shinkansen, Joetsu Shinkansen and Tohoku Shinkansen between Tokyo and Morioka were built in JNR era. These Shinkansen lines were build by the government fund. Now when the Shinkansen line is built, the government of Japan pay 2/3 of the cost and prefecture pay 1/3 of the cost. And JR pays usage fee. JR can choose to release the coventional line or keep it. That's why Tokaido line and Sanyo line still exist. If the Tohoku Shinkansen and the Joetsu Shinkansen would be built now, some part of the conventional lines, such as Tohoku line and Joetsu line would be separtated from JR. Of course, if a prefecture doesn't want to burden the cost, it can refuse the Shinkansen construction. In this case, Saga prefecture want JR to keep the conventional line and Saga doesn't want to pay the huge cost. They are satisified the current rail network. The Tohoku-Hokkaido Shinkansen lines from Morioka to the north was built after JR, so the conventional lines are operated by the semi-public sector.

I wonder whether an option for the Gauge-Change Train could be the new technology developed for the Montreux-Oberland Bernois line in Switzerland, where they were testing a GCT that can switch from 1000 mm to 1435 mm, using bogies developed by Alstom. Why don't they just redesign the gorgeous GCT with ordinary bogies and run it on the new Nagasaki shinkansen? It is far too beautiful not to be put into operation! I have another question about this too: Why didn't they just add a standard gauge track to the existing narrow track on the mainline from Hakata to the new shinkansen line? That way they could have run mini-shinkansen on both the mainline and the new shinkansen track without having to change trains! Another extremely informative video for us English speaking JR fans! Thank you especially from a fan that has a specific interest in JR Kyushu trains.
