Blayne Alexander, Peter Baker, and Harry Litman join Yasmin Vossoughian to discuss what it could mean for both the case and the concurrent Republican presidential primary season. “You just have the nation literally watching day after day, perhaps week after week. This could be a very long trial. Watching the evidence presented, watching the witnesses provide their testimony, watching the president scowl,” Baker says. “This will be playing out presumably in the thick of an election campaign in which he would much prefer, of course, to be on the road at various rallies.”

The timing of the indictments vs. the campaign was pretty much inevitable. As other prosecutors have said, and judges will presumably agree: The investigations into Inmate P01135809's numerous crimes (in various jurisdictions) began as soon as evidence of them came to light. The investigations were thorough, finding all the facts, and making sure there were grounds, and means, to prosecute, and then (at least in some cases), there was the additional step of getting an indictment. All that takes time, and was done as quickly as practical. The 45th Defendant announced his plans to run before he even was dragged from office. So, no matter when the charges were announced, they were inevitably "during the campaign."

This is going to be a situation that Donnie can't control. He has built himself as always being in control. He will be seen to be corrected, admonished and scolded by someone who actually does have power over him. My bet is his followers will not like that! Whether they drop him, or do something stupid and violent is up in the air, but something will happen! Alternatively, Donnie will crack, and either hurl insults at everyone (not a good idea in court), or actually break down on national TV... One thing is for sure: Point a camera at the guy, and he will start talking. Once he starts talking, he will incriminate himself further. That is unavoidable.

I like Kemp. He's still a conservative with whom I would likely disagree on many things, but he has a spine, a sense of decency, and a respect for the rule of law -- three things that have disappeared from a lot of his party. I also love his comment about impeaching Willis being "infeasible and unconstitutional." That three-word phrase should be Inmate P01135809's new campaign slogan!
