Actually the tub on the bottom was a rotating radar. The MAD is on the starboard side and looks like a missile with a weird foam tail. I hate how much time I spent learning every inch of these things only to never again use any of that knowledge.

My favorite helicopters (it's a two-way tie) have to be the Hueys and Cobras, the latest models of which (UH-1Y and AH-1Z) are still used by the USMC. They were the helicopters that put the word "chop" in "chopper", which everyone knows is slang for a helicopter. The sound of a Huey's rotors in particular was utterly unmistakeable, the helicopter was utterly unique in the sound it made, which in turn made the helicopter instantly recognizable by anyone. And the Huey and Cobra share eighty to ninety percent of their parts in common. In fact the earliest Cobras were battlefield-made, cobbled together from Huey wrecks! Fun story from my past, my grandfather was a Vietnam and Korean War vet, he served in US Army Intel (spare me the inter-service jokes please) and as a member of the US Army Corps of Engineers. He was an officer as well, a Lieutenant Colonel. When I was younger, just before he died, we were in the house after putting Christmas lights on the roof one holiday season when he and I heard a strange sound: The classic Chop-chop-chop-chop... sound of very unique rotor blades slicing through the air. Immediately recognizing it from the sound and simultaneously practically yelling, "That's a Huey!" my grandfather and I ran outside just in time to see a vintage UH-1 fly, low and slow, directly over our heads. I will never forget that awe-inspiring, amazing sight.

I spent nearly two years in Vietnam flying the UH-1. It was a glorious experience, which I remember with fondness. When I hear the word ‘helicopter’ images of the Huey flash through my mind and I am momentarily in the front seat of it, trying to achieve a smooth flight for the Grunts in back.

Good job as usual Ryan - and others have picked up the couple of slight errors. Although Sikorsky built the empty airframes in Connecticut, it actually became a B in Owego, NY. The IBM (later Lockheed Martin who now also owns Sikorsky) plant there where I spent my career integrated every SH-60B ever built. By integrating it was installing every rack, computer, radar, data link, etc. etc. and miles of cables. IBM was the first company not an airframer to be the prime contractor for an aircraft - because the systems installed were so complicated. I worked on the last 6 B's ever built, which went to the Spanish Navy - and then on the development SH-60R aircraft which are current in the fleet prior to my retiring. The R is a much more capable airframe and sensor/weapons system. All of them as well as all the 'glass cockpits' for the SH-60S (as well as the R's cockpit) come out of Owego as well. You can think of the actual aircraft as just the truck hauling an amazingly complex electronic system around. As an old Army guy my first love is slicks - but then Hueys were newish when I was new in the Army. And I even got to fly a UH-1C/M once upon a time.... The good old days.

Big fan of the channel. Great job with the SH-60B walk around. One slight error. You were talking about the MAD detector but it appears you were pointing to the RADAR. The MAD sensor on this helo is a MAD Bird that is deployed and retracted from one of the hard points (just like the SH-2F you have currently have on the USS New Jersey). Really like this channel. Keep the videos coming.

You can identify a JSDF Blackhawk by their rather long outrigger wings, which carry very large fuel tanks. Another fun fact: Blackhawks are also built in Poland, by Sikorsky subsidiary PZL Mielec. The Blackhawks recently bought by the Philippine Air Force were built there (as well as the succeeding orders, since PAF is eventually going to have 36 choppers).

The 1st SH-60B first flew December 22, 1979. The one you have looks like an early ‘80s vintage, it doesn’t have the modifications for the Auxiliary Fuel Tanks. As others have pointed out the round thing on the bottom is a search radar. There’s two Data Link antennas on the aircraft that can send data back to the mother ship. I help build the 1st batch of SH-60B’s 1979 to 1981, before going on to other Sikorsky programs. My Favorite helicopter has to be the CH-53E, I was a 2nd shift crew chief for almost the whole production run (1983 to 1996,) at Sikosky.

Nice job Ryan. I’ve been flying Navy Seahawks for 18 years. You did good but a few things are inaccurate. 3 hours was the normal sortie without refueling. Also, that’s the surface radar underneath, not the MAD. MAD is on the stbd side back behind the cabin door. It’s mounted on that boom that sticks out.

We had two Seahawks on the ship I was stationed on (USS Curts FFG-38). Seeing those sonobuoy slots Gabe me a little PTSD flashback, as I was the Sonar Technician in charge of their inventory, and the airmen never put them back where they pulled them from!

Although I wasn't on your ship (USS Shoup DDG-86), yeah we airdales really didn't quite mesh with the ship's crew. As my AT1 put it, "We sleep in your bed, eat your food, and **** your women, then go home." Personally the only real interaction with the ship's company I had was with our SK, sometimes I'd chat with the aft lookout, and flirting with one chick on the bridge (at least until I saw her in civies).

As an ASW operator/repair technician, we worked with the LAMPS (Seasprite then the Seahawk) and with P3’s. I wish like hell that the recruiter, when I said I wanted to be a sonar technician on submarines, would have told me that there happened to be airborne sonar platforms. On both the helo’s and the P3’s. Found out I was claustrophobic at the beginning of Sub school and my contract was redrawn for surface sonar. Why not tell me about the airborne suites? I knew about SOSUS but, they said they were manned mostly by females. WoW, that would have been a super duty assignment. 🤔🤭

Always wished we had the chance to land a 60 on my last ship. Technically we could, but they didn't like to do it since our deck was so small (USCG WHEC). Working with the MH-68 was pretty cool. We would usually be pretty busy if we had one as we launched it all the time looking for narcotics. But my favorite was the H65. I always felt like our primary mission was lifesaving in the USCG, so launching the 65 from the deck always felt like we were doing our primary mission.

Personally I thought the uh-1 was a personal favorite. Always wanted to fly in one. I'm going to be there in about 5 days.
@AvengerII
@AvengerII Жыл бұрын
I believe Ryan said they don't have dedicated hangars on the Iowa-class ships to do maintenance. There's just no room on the existing ship to install a proper hangar without gutting more of the ship. It just doesn't seem worth it. Any maintenance would have to be done out in the open, exposed to the elements. Helicopters that routinely operate out at sea suffer faster corrosion because of salt water. Without access to a hangar like on a supercarrier or amphibious assault ship ("Mini-Carrier or basically Essex-Class II!"), the helicopter on a battleship will deteriorate faster, ie, rust quicker than its land-based counterpart. You just can't get away from corrosion with aircraft use over water. Aircraft that have to operate at sea (from aircraft carriers and amphibious) are specifically designed with more corrosion-resistant metals in their engines for instance. Even taking precautions for corrosion, helicopters still wear out quicker at sea. On supercarriers, half the airwing is on deck at any time and constantly exposed to salt water and weather. That's one of the reasons I think why the specs are LOWER on Navy planes for longevity (20 years guaranteed; we have Air Force bombers comfortably exceeding 50+years service and 12,000+ hrs) and flight hours (6000 hrs; Air Force specs for fighters call for minimum of 8000 hrs but I think they're anticipating 10,000-12,000 for F-35 and next-gen). You can extend those Navy expected figures with rebuilds by 3,000 hrs or even double original frame life but it's generally better to replace a worn-out airframe with a new one. There's always an 'X-Factor' and you can't anticipate every problem that pops up with wear. It just gets worse the older a plane gets! One thing they did in Hawaii with their F-15s was that after EVERY flight they flight they taxiied their F-15s through a sprinkler system to wash off as much salt off the planes as possible. As I understand it, prior to getting hand-me-down/worn out F-15Cs, the Hawaiian ANG had some of the best kept F-15A models! I presume they taxi their F-22s post-mission through the same sprinkler system to this day.

In late 2003 before I deployed to Iraq, I was an army PFC detailed with a couple of guys to guard our brigade's vehicles while they were waiting to be put onto ships. Well the Seal Team is or was on Ford Island. Well some guy rolls up heading to work and my nco and I roll up and stop the guy to see what was going on and if they've seen anyone messing with our vehicles. There wasn't anything but the SEALs and NOAA at the time and we didn't know seals were there. Well he was a senior chief and proudly stated "Well I'm from the SEAL Team. Hooyah?" My naturally smartallick mouth responded with "that wasn't the question, Senior Chief". My NCO just looked at me with a death stare. I replied with "general order". Senior Chief went away and my platoon thought the situation was hilarious when they found out about it. For a while guys were running around saying "I'm with the SEAL Team, Hooyah?"

That's one of my old squadrons HSL-37 Wave Riders, but that was when they still operated SH-2F's out of NAS Barbers Point. The H-2 was still around in '92 when most of the LAMPS I squadrons started to be decommissioned. HSL-37 was the only one (on the West Coast) to transition to SH-60B's and may now be HSM-37 operating MH-60R's, but I'm not sure of that. What you called the MAD boom is in fact the APN-124 Radar. The MAD bird would be on the right hand side of the aircraft. Don't know when that tail boom art was put on but no H-2 had it when I left the sqd in '86. Also that aircraft was probably the CO's.

When I reported to HSL-37 in '94, they were the "Easy Riders" and flying Block 0 SH-60Bs. There was an entire SH-2 cockpit and nose section kept in the hangar though! The radar is actually an APS-124. A= Aircraft mounted, P=Radar, S=Surface search. (For anyone wondering why P=Radar, R was already taken by Radio. Like the ARC-182. C=Communication) The only art on HSL-37 SH-60Bs that I saw through at least May 2001, was the squadron logo in gray just forward of the SENSO's window on the port side. One aircraft had a shakka and "Hang Loose" painted on the bottom of the radome.

Matt I a video on a Victory ship in California they lit off the boilers and and getting the ship ready to operate under its own power it’s also a museum ship the SS Redhook. Did you every think of re-negotiating your agreement with the Navy so you can activate the engine room bring the boilers on line in pin the rudder and be able to operate all ships systems (except weapons ) and steam under BB 62 own power?
