The Nebraska Zephyr
Created on 10/28/21
The Nebraska Zephyr is a streamlined passenger train operated by the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad between 1947 until 1971 running between Chicago, Illinois and Lincoln, Nebraska. An entire trip would take about 9 hours and 45 minutes with the train running at an average speed of 56 MPH. In 1971. Amtrak was created which discontinued many streamlined passenger services including the Nebraska Zephyr.
Today, the Nebraska Zephyr can be seen at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois. The train consists of five passenger cars pulled by CB&Q E5A 9911A, nicknamed “The Silver Pilot”. The Silver Pilot is the very last surviving example of an E5A diesel locomotive built by EMD between 1940-1941. These engines were about 71 feet long and 15 feet high, weighing at 315,000 pounds that can produce up to 2,000 horsepower, with a top speed of 116 mph. Let’s watch the Nebraska Zephyr train on the rails at the Illinois Railway Museum.
