In WW2 our flatness was the problem, the Germans were able to bombard Rotterdam so accurately because they could see it from miles away.

Panteni87 We did put the flatness to use by flooding stuff in front of or around our enemies. It worked okay when there weren't any aircraft paratroopers around. Plus, y'know, massively outnumbered.

Its a mediaval tradition to name a region to its wealthiest province or county or earldom. In this case its holland for the netherlands and Flanders for the the whole of te dutch speaking side of belgium. For instance, Glanders was the wealthiest region in the 15th century and therefor the spanish named the low countiries Flandres. Check Alatriste for example. Belgica as also used in these days for the both low countries. There actual name was the 17 provinces. It was shapes like a lion on many late medieval cards.

Do any Dutch nationalists etc still look at Belgium and Luxembourg and think they should be a part of the Netherlands or is that left in the past completely?
@rbase96
@rbase96 7 жыл бұрын
That's mostly a thing of the past. If the Flemish ever decide to split of from Belgium, which is something that has been discussed (although not that serious), I'm sure that they would be able to become part of the Netherlands again if they wished so. It is hard to tell when you have crossed the border between the two countries anyway (except for the terrible roads in Belgium) as the culture, architecture etc. are quite similar.

The PVV is the closest thing you'll get to Nationalists in the Netherlands and although they want to leave the Benelux, they don't want to annex Belgium and Luxembourg since Belgian and the Netherlands haven't been united for almost two centuries and Luxembourg for even longer.

Hey, you said: Holland comes from Holt-land wich means wood-lands. I am Dutch, anderen i always thougt that it came from hol-land, wich means that it's like a bowl. This because a large part of the netherlands is below sealevel, and we, the Dutch, made it possible tout live there and keep it dry. We call that "inpolderen". But i can be wrong, I only wanted to share what i thought it had to be.

They are called low countries, but actually, Belgium isn't all that flat. It's devided in three regions: low-Belgium, middle-Belgium and high-Belgium. They're more or less the same size, so it's only one third that is flat. The Ardens reach up to 700m.

The low countries are called that way because they are low, considering the sea level. Luxembourg is in the ardens so quiet high, and therefore not considered one of the low lands. Many people also include Portugal when they speak about Mediterranean countries, when technically portugal is not. Yes the culture history/language is similar, but that does stil not make them Mediterranean, just as that does not bring Luxembourg closer to the sea level

Hi Stefán! Nice to see you here! No offense, but I think the Icelandic use of "Holland" for "Netherlands" is just laziness and also probably, because they're not part of the EU. They invent new words from Icelandic roots for all kinds of things from the outside like "computer" and "telefone", so they could easily put together the Icelandic cognates of "nether" and "land". Likewise, in Denmark there is the official word "Nederlandene", which the mainstream media, however, stubbornly refuse to use instead of the more folksy "Holland". Even many publishing houses try to discourage the use of "Nederlandene" as they condescendingly say "no one will understand it otherwise". Quite infuriating if you ask me. How will people get to know proper terms if you don't use them? Fortunately, Swedes and Norwegians do a better job. P.S.: The Faroese use "Niðurlond".

I was just trying to make a shitty joke about it being as far from Holland as possible ;D. I've only been in Rotterdam as of now (i'm German), because a good friend lives there and in some small town in Gelderland. Quite liked it there, actually quite liked the Netherlands in general. Even though it seemed to me that the Landscape in the west is much nicer to look at than in the east xD.

That is not true, it's actually because of the rivers like the Rhine and Maas that end here. So for other peoples around it it was the lowlands. Just like North Germany is called Low Germany and South Germany High Germany. Also the same in Egypt with Upper and Lower Egypt.

I had a friend in Limburg who called me a Hollander, because "everyone living north of the great rivers is a Hollander". I was flabbergasted and a bit insulted even. I am NOT a Hollander. Nederlander maybe, but really more a Frisian. I have nothing in common with 'hollanders' or the Randstad even. Okay, maybe I am exaggerating a bit, but these things still can be sensitive I guess. Even today.... Fascinating :)

There is one mayor error in your video. It sounds like you come from the Randstad because only people from the randstad would claim that the Dutch use The Netherlands and Holland more and more interchangeably. This is not true. Yes, in the Randstad people do. But in the other provinces there is more and more objection to the term Holland. The countries name is The Netherlands. Holland only concerns North and South Holland!

Your English is very good. I wasn't aware you're Dutch until you started mentioning cities like Utrecht. :) But isn't the name Nederland (and "lage landen") related to the fact that it's in the lower region of the Rhine, or as the Romans would say, Germania Inferior (which included the Belgian Ardennes)?

My Oma and Oma both came from Zuid-Holland after WWII in the early 50s. My Oma came from the town of Leidsendam near Leiden, and my Opa came from Alphen aan de Rijn. My Opa and his brothers used a horse drawn wagon to get around until he left for America. My Oma said there was only one car in the entire neighborhood and it was unusual to not see wagons. They loved their homeland, with its small farms, towns, and its flowers, but sadly after WWII, the Niederlands economy was not doing well, especially for farmers. My Oma and all of her side did classical 19th century farming. My Opa's side did dairy farming, and that's why he left for the U.S. He got his uncle to sponsor him, and eventually he bought his own dairy farm. During that time, he met my Oma (they had known each other in the Niederlands before moving to the U.S.), and a while later they would be married, living out their lives to the fullest, to the end of days. Let me know if anyone else has a similar story relating to Dutch (from Holland) origins, and thank you Hilbert for this video. Btw, your name reminds me of my Opa's first name, which was Gijsbertus.
