3:55 pressing down on the accelerator all the way isnt cheating. its whats needed for the computer to recognize whats going on and how to transfer power. not saying this Honda did great, but just letting you know. different AWD systems require different inputs. similarly with a subaru. a subaru requires hard inputs for the AWD system to send power to the needed wheels.
@TFLcar
@TFLcar Жыл бұрын
I disagree entirely. Hard inputs can be extremely dangerous in snow and ice events, and are never recommended. An AWD system needs to respond to gently inputs first and foremost
@jessethompson9087
@jessethompson9087 Жыл бұрын
@@TFLcarthat’s absolutely not true, and not how AWD systems work at all. Most vehicle computers need a little more than a slight throttle input to recognize wheel slip. Mashing the gas just to see what the computer can do is exactly what you need to do to find out how the computer works. Some cars are programmed differently. Honda is clearly one of them.

3:47 I don’t think these CUV systems are designed to hold brakes necessarily but rely on wheel spin to use that inertia. Pulsing the brake pad while it’s spinning helps the diff send that available torque to the side which has traction.

Tommy, Love the Slip test!! Honda needs to be watching this! They make 3 different AWD systems... this one needs work. The IVTM-4 systems are excellent (Pilot/Passport/Ridgeline). I have to admit, the majority of CRV buyers, especially the Hybrid buyers will not be going off-roading in their CRV's. (less than 1%) Thps system as does Toyota's RAV 4 Hybrid can used improvements.
@James-il3tq
@James-il3tq Жыл бұрын
This AWD system would be ok for target buyers if they didn't jack the price in this redesign. Even if Honda added its kick@ss IVTM4 SH-AWD to this it would still be way overpriced. RAV4 hybrids AWD perform very similar to CRV, less complexity (no drive shaft and no rear differential + only have to change rear transaxle fluid every 60,000 miles). Most importantly Toyota's hybrid RAV4 is far less expensive and delivers significantly better fuel economy (especially in highway) @ 40mpg combined. Also arguably less complex and more reliable. As always tires make a massive difference in winter and off-roading so a decent set of winter tires and/or mild AT tires for these unibody crossovers (for those who weekend adventure, camp, softroading, etc) are well worth the investment.
@jamesmedina2062

So you think if you took a survey of CRV buyers that only 1% would go offroad? Many people want vehicles that do it all, hence the design. If it only did regular roads then what would be the point ??

I love how theres hate in the comments because they automatically assume that an AWD system = off-road performance. AWD systems come in all flavors, the CRV isn't designed for off road conditions, so you're not going to see it perform as such. Its made for city driving. Also you're driving with all season tires and not off road tires like in your other tests. Having the right tires in the first place would make a total difference in how the car drives in snow and dirt. Long story short: If you want an Accord crossover, buy the CRV. If you want an off road snow riding machine from Honda, get the Honda Pilot Trail Sport. In general though, you should skip AWD altogether for actual deep snow and major off-road tests and get a 4X4 / 4WD.

The "Achilles heel" of the CR-V is that it has an open differential and not a limited slip differential. Having a limited slip differential would have a made a significant difference, which is why the Honda Pilot would be a better choice in deeper snow. I used to have an 8th Gen Civic Si with a limited slip differential, and now I have a MKV7 GTI with an open differential, and there is a big difference, in my opinion, on how they handle in the snow. The Si did a much better job.

Not uncommon for AWD "utes", as you are well aware, since there are no locking differentials. The CRV is a soft roader not an offroader, nor is it marketed as such. Sec most popped tires can be fixed by a repair kit so they actually did there job and looked up the facts also all donut tires can’t be driven on going highway speeds or for longer then 50 miles. So a repair kits better because you can go longer and at a faster speed. And fog light really ain’t that important also there lights dim so much. Futhermore, I am telling you right now, you are lucky if you can get RAV 4 hybrid close below 40k. ANY RAV 4 hybrid I am inquiring (about 40 vehicles) in the past year are going more $40K otd. with Honda you can get low 40K OTD in the US.

I'm a Honda freak! Dirt bikes, gens, Africa Twin, pressure washers, quads and SUVs, due to reliability. We currently have a 2017 Touring since new, but will now be going to Toyota. CRV Touring only offers Hybrid now :-( We live in Northern Canada, and don't have faith enough in hybrid/electronics for the many cold months we have. I wish they offered both options still.

Guys, unless you’re doing off roading all the time, this thing will be unstoppable in the snow for 99% of the people. I live in a hilly winding Boston suburb and managed just fine in every single snowstorm in front wheel drive prius and accord with snow tires, haven’t been stock once! But let’s be honest - how many CRVs actually ever see dirt? I’m up here in Canada and it is nice to have all wheel drive in winter for the very snowy days. But even then, if you live in a city where the plowing is good, there are only a few days a year when you actually gain much advantage from all wheel drive.

Lol Canada ain't one homogeneous place. In Toronto, for example, I never felt the need for AWD and basically never touched dirt. Here in BC tons of people go hiking, camping, etc which means driving on forest roads, even within an hour or two of Vancouver. Amusingly if you're close to Vancouver you might encounter snowy roads more because they have not nearly enough snowplows for the area.

Kinda surprised that individual wheel braking to transfer torque is not part of the traction control system. I thought that is one of the requirements of the system? TC shouldn't be just reducing throttle, it needs to brake spinning wheel even on a 2WD application.

If the price was more reasonable this AWD could get a pass for many target buyers (urban drivers who almost never off-road or even soft road). As for winter good tires and ground clearance in deep snow more important then AWD (although AWD certainly helps accelerate even a basic AWD system works fine in most conditions and on any in town roads).

I'm curious why Honda didn't used the system from the Sh-Awd Hybrid variant. It's far less complex than a mechanical awd system and while yes a true slip and grip mechanical awd might prove better than the Rav4s system, it appears there isn't as much as the Rav4 eAwd in the AWD slip test. Truth be told in an effort to be different, honda 2 mode Hybrid might be hurting the usable powerband in these lowspeed senerios since it needs to lock up a clutch for full power
