Let CARZING take the headaches out of car shopping! head to www.carzing.com/thesmokingtire to find out how!
The all-new Subaru BRZ, like it's Toyota sibling, takes an already succecssful formula and only improves it, with a more powerful, rev-happy engine, an even lower center of gravity, better steering and shifter feel, and at a still very affordable price. But the sum is greater than the parts, and the new BRZ, even at altitude, is shockingly quick up a canyon road.

I can envision aftermarket (Perrin?) coming up with some knee pads. The lumbar support is a bigger issue for older drivers and longer drives. I have a '17 Limited, and that aspect of the seats is sorely lacking. The seat tends to push your torso forward into a "C" shape. I resolved it by using a small half roll (half of a cylinder shape, flat on the back) lumbar support. Would be interesting to see someone drive this new model at night and see how the headlights work. On my '17 they are utterly bizzare. Apparently there is no true high or low beam. Low beam is achieved by means of a shutter (think "eye lid") that drops down over the top half of the light source. This creates an absolutely bizzare cut off in which you have lots of light where you have light, then complete blackout above a very sharp horizontal line. It is absolute crap for hilly driving. I hope they rectified this. The engineers in charge of that should have been fired and it should not have been allowed to go to production wtih that set-up. Unfortunately it is not something you discover during a test drive, as most often those happen during daylight hours. I'd sure as hell drive a new one at night to see how well the adaptive lights work.

This is like the ultimate weekend track day platform on a budget. With the increased rigidity and center of gravity as well as keeping the weight down and getting the 2.4, you could build this thing up in a hurry. Upgrade the brakes, throw on some 2 or 3-way coilovers and maybe a few bracing components and/or aero and wring out a little more power and you are good to go for some serious lap times. It would take on cars with significantly more power and much bigger price tags while still comfortably getting you to work during the week.
@heyhayhay247
@heyhayhay247 2 жыл бұрын
Let's take your statement and test it... $30,000 car + $3,000 BBK + $3,000 coilovers + $2,000 for ~25hp + $1500 aero + $1500 better wheels/tires = $41,000 This is assuming you do all the work yourself. OR...just buy a 987.2 Cayman S and save the rest for track time.
@PapaTroll86
@PapaTroll86 2 жыл бұрын
@@heyhayhay247 Even if you did find one in great condition for that price, you would still have to track prep it. This will cost even more since the car will be at least moderately used. And maintenance and repair costs (even if you do it yourself, which you would absolutely have to in this case) would be SIGNIFICANTLY higher for the Cayman S. It would add up exponentially faster than the BRZ and the longer you track it, the less budget friendly it will be. In 10 years when this BRZ is the same age as that Cayman S, it certainly won't cost $30k (if you want to compare it to a 10 year old Porsche.) There are many more budget friendly builds if you are on a tighter budget than either of these cars, especially if you are turning to the used market, but if you are looking for a brand new car to have fun with on the track, this would check a lot of boxes.
@heyhayhay247
@heyhayhay247 2 жыл бұрын
@@PapaTroll86 the Cayman is going to need brake pads and maybe some minor cooling upgrades at most. FCP Euro's insane lifetime warranty makes maintenance cost a nonissue. Then, in 10 years, the same Cayman will be worth 2 or 3 times what the BRZ will. All that mod money spent on the BRZ won't be worth anything on the used market.

Matt I’m 5’11” 185lbs and I had issues in the 2013 BRZ I tracked because no knee pads. So much so that I bought aftermarket ones. So your point is valid even for “smaller dudes”. :) Great episode, and more Kristen in the car please. I found myself agreeing with her a lot and you two have a good chemistry. It’s clear that your friends and can share open and honest opinions.

I drove one of these this weekend back to back with my 2013 BRZ. It was nice, there's noticeably more torque down low. The interior is nicer. The car felt a little softer than mine in a way that wasn't particularly appealing to me. My car feels a bit more raw/connected. I was seriously thinking about upgrading, but I found I preferred my car. My car with a supercharger would be better than the new car in every way except interior and reliability.

I like the GR86 front end better, but they have different sway bar mounting points and setups. It would be hard to choose one without driving them both. Of course parts can be changed, and even with the inflation I expect the Subaru to be lower in price. I hope many people buy these cars. A lightweight RWD naturally aspirated engine car with a manual transmission won’t be available for much longer.

Matt Love your vids brother. You forgot one thing about not turbo charging these vehicles.. It would add cost $$. Not only that neither Subaru or Toyota wants to compete with themselves and market a lower cost competitor to the supra or WRX. I had an STI in '06 it was a fun car.. I would totally go for a NA car like this for the pure driving fun !

Supercharge it and shut up already. Less heat management, more power. With the HKS on my Gen 1 with more power, little disappointed in only 28 more horsepower in the 2nd gen. I do like a lower COG considering it's best in class already. Also like those cams. 4k and under, grocery duty. 4k and up, oh baby.

On point with the HP personally the good spot is 220-300 HP with just right amount of weight 2800-3300 pounds enough fun to push the car 10/10 without the speeding ticket.

Loosing even more weight was a great idea she mentioned. Two piece brake disks, lighter forged wheels, a carbon hood and trunk would only add to the driving refinement without adding NVR.
@MyGoToUserName
@MyGoToUserName 2 жыл бұрын
Wheels are probably easiest way to save some weight. If these are Anything like the gen one wheels you can shave off 5-8 pounds per corner unsprung. Factory hood and trunk are already aluminum. You'd probably be better off getting a lightweight battery. Way cheaper and saves more weight than carbon hood+trunk combined.
