Thanks again @shawnwillsey for this informative update! Your insights are always much appreciated :) And thank you @MandieJo and Susan Helmer for answering questions and moderating the chat at the same time, great job ladies! :) I read in an Icelandic news article this morning that work on the new defense wall in Grindavík is going well (it should take 2 to 3 weeks in total) with 30 to 35 people working during day shifts, fewer during night shifts. The new wall is expected to be approximately 5 meters high and 800 meters to 1 km long. Icelanders are amazing!!

There is a great shot on one of the drone flights (I see them all so they blend together) of the lava lake side of the the tunnel in from the cone. It also shows the inner walls of the lava lake/levee system. It looks like it plugged on the cone side. The lower flow field gas plumes have subsided, and there are no longer any glow down near the berms so that system of tubes has drained out.

@𒁕𒊑𒉣𒈨 You had asked: > How high do you have to jump to set off a mini quake. I found an answer: "If the spectator of 60kg in weight jumped 10cm, energy a spectator: 60 Kg×0.1 m×9.8 kg/s^2 = It becomes 59J. If 55000 spectators have this energy all together, the entire energy : 59 It becomes J×55000 person = about 3.2 million J. This corresponds into the energy of the earthquake of about magnitude 1.1" [This was calculated based on 55000 spectators in a stadium, hence the odd person count and the use of the term "spectator".]

Since the lava flow has waned, can you discuss what the fissures that went through Grindavik will mean for the future of the town? Will it cause the middle of the town to continue to drop as the plates continue to separate? Or as the plate shift continues, will it increase the likelihood that magma will find its way back under the town, causing lava to eventually flow directly in town? Also, what are the chances that with the magma chambers continuing to inflate under the power station, that the next eruption will occur there?
@waynehutton6133
@waynehutton6133 Ай бұрын
Hi Shawn. Thought you might cover my question regarding the uplift increasing the magma Chambers storage capacity, as every time there is a eruption there's a drop, but the drop only partially returns to the preceeding level. Hence the chamber has to be getting larger in capacity.???

A question that came to mind as you were going over the earthquake data from Hawai'i: Some of the earthquakes are clearly marked as having occurred at a "negative depth". Two explanations that quickly came to mind to explain this: (1) the depth is given relative to sea level (or other specific altitude), rather than depth relative to the local ground level, (2) the depth is an estimate and the magnitude of the error in this measurement is such the best estimate for the location of the earthquake is actually above the local ground level. The second posed explanation above brought to mind another question: how accurate are the earthquake focus determinations? What sort of scale would we be talking about? Is it 100's of meters or 10's of meters, or something like that? Is the depth estimate better or worse than the horizontal estimate? Thanks.

I like the connection between Icelandic and NA Westcoast tectonics. I can attest the midwest US kicks ass! Business is good and gas is cheap. Will there be a direct temporal relationship between the Atlantic spreading center movement and Farallon subduction/PNW Clockwise rotation/San Andres slip?

that volcanologists seems to be hoping that the next eruption moves over to Eldvorp because there is no infrastructure?.......is it wishful thinking or based on what data?....there was mention of plate boundaries I believe....as you inferred there are no earthquakes in that region so far...

Could the shift in the INSAR data be due to the inflated lava accumulation on the surface? That trend should in theory show up in this measurement overlayed on the magma chamber inflation, no?
