In 1877 the Nez Perce tribe was ordered to move from their homeland to the Lapwai reservation. With a tense situation on their hands leading to war, they decided to fight and make a stand. This is the incredible story of the Nez Perce last stand and their leader Chief Joseph.
Chief Joseph's surrender speech:
"Tell General Howard I know his heart. What he told me before I have in my heart. I am tired of fighting. Our chiefs are killed. Looking Glass is dead. Toohoolhoolzote is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say yes or no. He who led the young men is dead. It is cold and we have no blankets. The little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food; no one knows where they are-perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children and see how many I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my chiefs. I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever."

I saw the mini-series, I Will Cry No More Forever, when I was about 15 (with actor Ned Romero in the lead role) and I never forgot it. I loved the way Chief Joseph gave the army a run for its money. I admired Joseph and considered him a noble, kind hero. This miniseries led me to read and learn more about the Nez Perce. The way native Americans were treated throughout history is despicable, we should be ashamed.

In the state of Idaho they always talk about Chief Joseph. He was and is a national hero. Not too many people knew about him because his history was very short. Chief Joseph is a legend.

The Nez Perce War is perhaps the most despicable and ugly episode in a very long and despicable history involving First Nations in the US. The Nez Perce rescued Lewis and Clark from starvation and gave them canoes for the trip to the Pacific. And for that help the US fucked them over. How very lovely. I had a chance to consult with the Nez Perce on archaeology a few decades ago, and so maybe that's why their treatment brings tears to my eyes 45 years after first hearing their story. It was more then unfair. The tribe never had a significant disagreement with Americans in more then 60 years of contact. Their treatment was utterly shameful. I'm ashamed of it, perhaps because my ancestry is Canadian. Alvin Josephy wrote a credible history of the tribe and it's well worth reading.

@@donaldcharles3331 our government did not have to treat many of the tribes as they did. I also knew Naz Perce. Many tribes & whites had excellent trading relationships. The Eastern Cherokee i knew told me the trail of tears was calls so because the whites cried NOT them. They had inner married among the settlers many were relatives. The Comanche on the other hand were absolutely ruthless and vicious even among others natives. They tortured slaughtered and murdered their way back & forth accross they pains. We all people have skeletons in our closets. Few nations throughout history would even to bothered to give the conqured any reservation land of their own. Assimilate/Convert or die! That has been the rule for much of the non western worlds history. We cannot undo the past but we can do better in the future. Those natives living on reservations close to major populations do well. Casions etc. Those that do not no so much. They need to be allowed to devolve their land. The BIA sucks makes it 4x as hard to develop anything. The red tape is ridiculous. Why do natives need a government agency to manage their own affairs. Aren't they perfectly competent on their own?!

I cannot believe what happened to Joseph and his people. I was so happy they got some of the ancestral land back not too far from me. But they shouldn't have had to pay a church, it's repayment of blood money 😔. I live in the middle of umatilla tribal council, Walla Walla Washington to poverty flats ( close to Idaho). I am blessed to live where I live💕.

According to the book Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, the Nez Perce, [Pierced Noses] dug fox holes in order to avoid being easy targets. They also concentrated their fire on army-officers in order to cause confusion among leaderless soldiers.

Makes sense. When I heard they beat a surprise attack with a howitzer involved with the high ground against them I was kinda shocked. Like these guys had some great tactical leadership to be prepared for a worst case scenario and even hold their ground much less win

I first read about the long march of the Nez Perce over forty years ago. It has stayed with me all these years. It is an appalling indictment of the US treatment of Native Americans. Lie after lie. It is interesting to note that this particular story in the history of the West is barely known about, perhaps because for it to be told, not one good thing could be said about how the Nez Perce were treated. But then, what can ever be said about the so-called Indian Wars that is not shameful?
