I left Nikon when the F4 came out. I just didn't like it and opted for the ergonomically smooth Canon EOS system. My favorite 35mm camera was and is the Nikon F3, and that camera got me through a decade with absolute excellence.
Now I have an F4, and for the life of me, I do not remember why I previously didn't like it. I actually LOVE it now and am looking forward to spending a couple of days in Death Valley with it and my Df.
If you shoot Nikon, it would be an excellent addition to your kit. Shoot a little film with not much of an additional add since all the lenses Nikon makes fit this camera. Autofocus, amazing meter... it is simply a classic analog camera that performs well in the digital age.

I absolutely love the F4S I have. When I went back primarily to film in 2013 I amassed quite a collection of 35mm-120-LF gear but the F4S is the one I reach for when I want auto focus and a slam dunk on correct exposure metering. The metering is so very accurate. It's never let me down. Plus, if I'm ever attacked by a bear I know I could defend myself with it.

When it is filled with batteries, it is a formidable beast in the hands. I think holding it with that bulk steadies the shot a bit. And yeah, that Nikon compatibility is simply great. I have manual focus, AF, and the newer lenses and all work perfectly.

It’s nice how many YT channels have sung the praises of the F4 in recent months. What attracted me most about the F4 is the analog dials instead of buttons and menus, and that it’s backwards compatible with all F mount lenses. Love seeing you wax poetic about film.

Thanks. And at the low price for a good one, even low for a mint one (some of them coming from Japan and Singapore are absolutely mint) it is a great value for a workhorse film camera.

I'm pleased there are still a lot of film shooters around creating buzz and making great photographs. Like you, I've never even touched an F5, probably because its little brother, the F100, does pretty much all the same things in a smaller, lighter package. Those are also bargains on eBay or the film photo groups on Facebook. Thinking of shooting film alongside digital for our next P52 assignment, not to submit but just to practice shooting with strobes and not having the crutch or safety net of digital post-production.

I had an F5 for a bit ( when I was just starting to spend $ on photography and people already jumped to digital) . The viewfinder was/is absolutely gorgeous... I'm still waiting for a viewfinder that large. The tactile feel was amazing as well. It was relatively heavy though and probably why I've stayed away from the D3,4,5-etc. It made shooting really fun aside from the weight and/or cost of the battery/film.
@DonGiannatti
@DonGiannatti 6 жыл бұрын
I think the cost of the film has made many of us better photographers. We are so not used to spending a single cent on the image we make, and a roll of 35mm at a price point of $20 per 36 images (film and processing) makes us slow down and place a value on each frame. I may shoot a couple hundred images on a day in Glacier Park, but maybe only a roll of film. Taking the time to make each exposure perfect is great practice for all of us. I would like to shoot less and have more hits. And you are right about that viewfinder... wow. Just really a great camera. It's on my want list.

Hi Don, Happy New Year mate from down under. I purchased a new prime lens and that is a Nikon AF-S 85mm f1.8G lens in early December 2020. I have used it on my D300 and the F60D and I must say that I love the lens. I am now looking at purchasing either the Nikon F4 or the F4S and I have narrowed them down to a few cameras. Interesting that you mentioned some secondhand F4 and F5 prices, I have been looking at F4 and F5 prices on eBay and I have found that if someone like myself is looking for a mint condition F4 or F5 you will have to be prepared to pay anything from USD$400- $1000 , with some of the high end “barely used” like new fetching high prices. The thing that I really like about the F4 camera is that all of the camera settings are done using a dial and they are right in front of you, not buried inside the camera on menus like my D300. I too love FILM and I don’t mind digital if I am in a hurry. The thing with digital it does have a use by date. It will be very interesting to see a 2009 digital camera like my Nikon D300 still functioning in 20 years time.

Later as didge kicked in and earning got better I bought the D1h which I loved literally to death I replaced it with the D3s which I still hammer it never lets me down. AND you can use all the Nikkors to your hearts content. Never had the cash to buy one, so just a simple FE for me. Bought one in 2015. Used with fuji. Back to the old days. Just a fab experience. Sadly, there just aren't many film development labs around any longer. So, unless you are willing to setup your own mini lab in your spare bedroom, you will have no other option than to send your film to be developed and many of those places do not send back your original film with your digitized images (at whatever resolution) on USB, flash card or CD-ROM. Regardless, I still shoot my Nikon F5 and LOVE IT. I have someone I trust who processes my negatives in bulk and sends back my developed film at a very reasonable cost. "Long live film!!" I also own a Nikon D810 (full frame sensor) and a Canon T5i (crop sensor) with various lenses for each. I agree with you about loving the fact that I can interchange Nikon lenses between both Nikon bodies (digital and film). Thanks for sharing your video. Oh, and I did own the Nikon F4. I loved the beautiful lines, the design reminded me of a Ferrari sports car. I also loved the physical dials and switches.

I have my 4 roll developing tank and now that I only shoot a few rolls a month, I wait until I have four rolls and process them. And it is eezy-peezt to do (except for four months in the summer when the water temp is a real pain to control). For those times I use FIND Labs in Oregon. They do a great job and the scans are excellent.

Don, interesting historical narrative from a pro or semi-pro photographer with a long history. I started shooting with my dad's Leica IIIc, and his Rolleiflex TLR because these were the best out there in the early 1950s. Then he bought an F2S which I also shot along with my Polaroid SX70. Fast forward and I ended up buying a lightly used F4S in about 1995 for way too much money, then the F5 that I still have. I nearly bought a Hasselblad small system years ago from my late uncle but passed. Had been looking at the Bronica 120 system a bit recently. Developed my own B&W film and learned it in high school. I think I actually prefer the F4 simply because it is more simple to use than scrolling through wheels on the F5, but that's the Neanderthal in me. I too live in Arizona, Camp Verde. Been here a year now. Wanted to say Howdy. God bless you.

Welcome to Arizona. I go through Camp Verde many times a year. Sometimes it is for my annual round trip shot through Payson, Camp Verde, Jerome, Prescott, Wickenburg... a lovely motorcycle ride that takes all day when you stop and have some fun along the way. I have thought about going on and getting an F5 or maybe springing for an F6... but my favorite camera is still the F3, so bells and whistles don't interest me much. Thanks for watching.

The primary advantage of these newer cameras is very accurate flash metering for fill, to me. The F5 is harder to use because I'm not much of a menu guy, prefer round knobs than small serrated wheels so I understand why you like the F3. The F4S I bought the day before a trip to visit Montreal, sans any manual, and it performed brilliantly in Matrix and programmed AE. I want another one but without the additional batteries.

Don, I watched the video all through wondering, "wow, has he even used an F5?". Then, when you said you never even held one, I decided to write. You don't know what you're missing. I shot with the F3, F4 and still own my F5. The F3 and F4 are great cameras and they got progressively better. The F5 is the pinnacle. It is absolutely awesome! It became an extension of my hand. In my opinion, it's the best 35mm film camera ever made. That's why I would never part with it, even though, I rarely shoot film these days. I challenge any Nikon shooter interested in film, who has never tried one to do so. When I got mine they were like $2700, original list was $3200! Now as you know, they can be had for a fraction of that.

Pierre. I just may have to get one just to have that classic gem of a camera. Perhaps sell one of my F2's and pick up an F5. My F2 in great condition with the motor drive should sell for just about the same as the F5 so that would make my system F2, F3, F4, F5... yeah - I like the sound of that.

Hi Don Loving your input on the web. Your passion (an overused word these days, but applicable here) for photography and for helping and guiding others shine through - so ‘Thank you’. I’m over the pond in the UK and have just picked up a really nice f4s for around $170. It’s a tremendous piece of design and engineering which has to be held and used to be really appreciated. Can’t wait to get out and do that. I’m using a d600 for digital work and the f4 will be the first film camera I will have used in about 15 years. Would you agree that there is a parallel between the film/digital debate and the vinyl/cd one? Like yourself, I grew up in an analogue world. The capabilities of the digital media blow my mind, but there is still something warm and satisfying about analogue IMHO. Thanks for everything- keep up the good work 🤓
@DonGiannatti
@DonGiannatti 6 жыл бұрын
My thoughts on the digital/analog are fairly simple. For those who love digital and only prefer to shoot it, wonderful. Make awesome images. For those who love analog and only prefer to shoot it, wonderful. Make awesome images. In the end, it is the image that I look at, that I engage with, and that either appeals to me or doesn't. And that is the way it should be. I love both. I think they are similar in many ways, and worlds apart in others - but they are still just the medium. In music, I have a wide variety of genres that I play in my list. Coltrane can be followed by Garth Brooks, followed by Stravinsky, followed by Sinatra, followed by Snow Patrol. I am the same way with photography. I have AAdams next to Dan Winters next to "Best Advertising Photography, 2004 Annual", next to Annie. The images I make with analog are a bit different than with digital too. I think they are more personal, more from the inside of my thoughts. I am very judicious with film... only making the exposure when I feel I have it right, then moving on to the next shot. And I have nearly every format I realized recently: 8x10, 5x7, 4x5, 6x8, 6x7, 6x6, 6x4.5, and 35. I love the ability to choose the right format for the photo I am contemplating - and I think of format first when developing an idea even though most of my work ends up being digital. Glad you like the channel.

The only thing about the f5 that isn't so great compared to the f4, is in my opinion, the lack of dials. Nikon switched to the modern system of a main control dial and function buttons to do everything with the little LCD on the top. I sold my EOS-3 and got the F4 beleive it or not. Actually a fair replacement would have been the F5, but the F5 has a built-in power pack that requires '8' friging batteries ! Yikes . The reason why I sold the my EOS-3, was because of the ultra-sensitive and very LOUD shutter that use to drive me crazy ! Plus the batteries were hard to find. I took this camera out on various shoots and the batteries would go dead on me all of a sudden. It wasn't like I could run to the corner drug store to find replacements.

Hi Don Love my EOS1n. Makes me take my time to ensure everything is right before pressing the shutter. Great video

That is a great camera. I have an EOS 1 and an EOS 3N with the retinal focus and man that thing is super incredible.

Isn't the "eye control" focus something else? My friend got an EOS a few years ago and we trained it to focus accurately for each of us, and could switch back and forth between users like the different driver setups for seat and mirror position in today's cars. Why hasn't that been incorporated into today's digital cameras I really don't know. If I didn't have a fortune invested in Nikon glass I'd definitely be messing around with one of those brilliant cameras.

"Why hasn't that been incorporated into today's digital cameras I really don't know." I can only imagine they are saving it for some next 'upgrade' event so they can charge a ton of money for archived technology. But then I can be somewhat jaded with all the gear hoopla.. heh

I have a F5 but recently won a bid for the F4. Should I still go ahead and get the F4?
@DonGiannatti

I would definitely get the F4. It is a wonderful camera and as much as I LOVE my F3, I must say that the heft and size of the F4 is something I appreciate now more than I did when it first came out. Putting it into my arsenal was such a perfect fit. And the autofocus is pretty nice to have. Both the F3 and the F4 have absolutely amazing metering systems so you will be rocking a pair of the best cameras ever made!

Oops, I read that as an F3 when you said F5. Hmmm... I think you should get the F4 ONLY if you need and want a second body for backup. The F5 is one of the greatest cameras ever so you are in good hands. Sorry for the mixup.

I should get my Nikon F4s in the mail this week. Can someone tell me how to take off the mb-21 battery pack and switch it to the smaller mb-20 battery pack so the camera isn't so heavy? Thank You.

That screw in the centre of the MB-21 at the back should remove the complete MB-21at which time all you have to do is add the shorter MB-20. I will be doing likewise.

sam taylor Sam, Nikon is known for its ability to use legacy lenses. Any Nikon Autofocus lens will work. I am even using non-af lenses on mine. Find a good 1.4 50 autofocus and mount it up. My brand new 50 1.8 mounts and works just fine as well.

I know this video was produced when everyone was doing F4 videos. But the first 8 minutes are spent rattling off gear and what you own until you get to the F4.

Hi Don could I ask you one final help question while I wait for my Nikon lens to arrive .( If I fire the shutter with no film in the chamber ,should the frame number be visible in the frame counter box. At the moment when I press the shutter button and it advances . the frame counter stays at beginning. Don't want to waste film with no lens attached. Hope this makes sense . trying to learn while waiting for lens. Thanks again and promise this is my last question for you. . Sam

My F4 is currently sitting here with a new roll of film in it. Same with my F3. I honestly cannot remember if it moves or not. Never shot it empty to see. However in a few days I will have this roll shot and we can try it then for you. But honestly, not to worry. Put a roll in it and after you shut the back and it takes up the roll, you will see it move to '1'. Then watch as you take the second shot. Not ever had problems with that part of the Nikons before so I am assuming you are fine.
