What improvements will you see with this edition? Chapter 5: Re-edited to address restrictions using shorter clips and still images. Chapter 10: Re-edited to address restrictions using shorter clips and still images. Chapter 18: The original video didn't render correctly. I suspect I overtaxed my iMac. I’m a religious man but not one of the fake judgemental types that sadly outnumber true believers. I have seen this movie 25+ times. Always turn to prayer, embrace love and forgiveness and take God’s hand. Your thoughts manifest things around you and influence your reality. This movie is not dangerous if you embrace the central theme which is that even though Corso is not a strong moral or heroic character when the chips are down he does the right thing (attempting to stop Miss St Martin from being killed, mercy killing Balkan..). This movie and in fact anything focusing on the dark nether world are dangerous if you embrace it the wrong way. There are things like overlapping dimensions and demons. Never ever attempt contact with these things. Man has light and dark inside. These nether things feed on and encourage sin and dark emotions. They help create situations that lead to suffering. Luckily there are angels and other things operating in the background as well.

I love this movie. However I think, sadly, we are alone out here. What is it about satanic cults that are so interesting though? It must be or why else would Polanski, who’s wife and child were killed by a psycho cult make this movie?

I think you are right - I have a copy of a very dark - very dark - set of Tarocci cards called Sola Busca.... it’s a modern facsimile, but I still keep a rosary on its case, and never use it for anything but carefully studying the beautiful engravings. Even dark magicians, I believe, say prayers to protect themselves from evil.

I am also a religious person, not the judge mental type. But I’m not the crazy type either. God is more powerful than a scary movie. You don’t have to spend your life, trying to spot demons and identify the devil in everythind, that’s not healthy. That’s just over the top American drama. Pray, learn the Bible and do right by God and there’s no need to be afraid. A good movie cannot shake true belief or love for God. Obviously, don’t practice occult things if you love God. But, if your playing in reading your bible… You won’t

Thanks for covering this film. I have seen it probably 20 times over the years and read the book as well. I’m glad this film is developing cult status as I’ve always felt there was something interesting about it. Not just the obvious film noir style, and cult or secret society plot line. One of the few instances of a film being better than the original novel I think

The Baroness lost her hand as the price for consorting with the devil. It seemed perfectly clear to me from what she said. I recently found out that sacrificing a body part to meet the devil is known in mythology. I had heard of killing an animal or person, of course, but this body part thing is new to me.

I wish theyd insert a public service announcement somewhere in the closing credits explaining that Balkan was not using gasoline in his ritual, it's got to be either coal oil or kerosene because gasoline is so incredibly flammable that the whole room would have blown up when he broke the lantern just from the fumes. Ive seen reviews of this movie that actually refer to it as gasoline and Ive realized from reading about recent incidents of people dying accidentally by pouring a container of gas onto bonfires that many people dont understand how flammable gasoline is and that the flames will travel up the stream into the container if it's ever poured onto a fire and explode immediately and if gas is poured onto the ground the fumes can ignite even far away from the actual puddle of gas.

Your videos , in my view, aren’t spoilers , not at all . They are pointers , explaining to the captivated audience. A viewer that can see yet rarely interprets thus fails to completely understand. Like in life , we either put too much into events or fail to comprehend alternative optional and otherwise meanings to what we’ve experienced witnessed told . So thank you .

Great set of commentaries on a great film. Might I suggest a video going into more detail on the source novel, EL CLUB DUMAS = THE CLUB DUMAS, by Arturo Perez Reverte? The book's title refers to the primary plot (which Polanski jettisoned in favor of the subplot about "The Nine Gates") involving a group of fans of Dumas's THE THREE MUSKETEERS, with the Telfer character adopting the persona of the villainous 'Milady' (who was portrayed by Faye Dunaway in the film version starring Michael York as D'Artagnan). I enjoyed Polanski's film so much that I sought out the book it was based on, and I've read four other books he's written, all of them quite excellent. A couple things regarding Polanski's movie: 1) when 'The Girl' with the hypnotically penetrating green eyes dabs her own blood on Corso's forehead, making what appears to be three parallel vertical blood-smears (literally blood-lines), it seemed to me to be an echo of the Mark of the Beast -- not to be confused with the Number of the Beast ["666"] -- which is said, in REVELATION, to be either in the Hand or on the Forehead. Corso receives this 'Mark of the Beast' directly from this 'person' who is "something like" a "guardian angel" but isn't one, strictly speaking. A fallen angel, perhaps . . . or a guardian devil. 2) The Ceniza Brothers (twins); I suspect that the two other twins -- played by the same actor -- WERE the Ceniza Brothers, having faked their deaths and adopted new personas. Their former identities as the Cenizas (i.e. the Ash Brothers) were a 'cover' for some previous identities, 'Ceniza' being a pseudonym. Their first names, too, might very well be fake names -- named Pablo and Pedro, Spanish for 'Paul' and 'Peter', the top figures in the Catholic Church. These two guys weren't above making a forged interpolation of the 9th engraving to insert into the copy they owned until Telfer purchased it on behalf of his wife, so it shouldn't be surprising that their identities might also be 'forgeries'. Finally, it was their timely lowering of that bookcase which enabled the real 9th engraving page to slide off the top and flutter down in front of Corso -- a HUGE coincidence . . . which means it WASN'T a coincidence. They were WAITING for Corso -- and the only person who could have alerted them to the fact that Corso would again be showing up there was 'The Girl', who had left the clue for Corso to find on the windshield of Balkan's car at that gas station. The Ceniza Brothers served as the Peter and Paul of whatever you might want to call the 'religion' represented by 'The Girl' who rides the 7-headed Beast in the engraving, two expert forgers doing the bidding of the Father (and/or Mother) of Lies. 3) It's been a while since I last read THE CLUB DUMAS, but I seem to recall that The Girl was, indeed, meant to be seen as the Devil -- a lonely being who wanted to be loved, with Corso becoming 'her' lover, a loner (hence lonely himself) who was not above being deceptive to serve his own ends. What do YOU think?

Something interesting. At 1:38:56, into the movie. The semi truck has, “60, 80, 90,” on the back side. In order to find the correct path to the mansion, they take, route “70.” The missing sequence. I don’t know if this means anything, but I thought it was interesting. The numbers are seen again at 1:55:26.

Revelation, Whore of Babylon, seven headed dragon, 666, the number of the Beast. Just saying. These symbols are in the movie. Rosemary's baby was born on 6/6/66. People took it as a reference to 666 at the time the movie came out.

@@watermelonlalala Yes, I'm well acquainted with the 666 from Revelation. My dad was a minister. It just doesn't fit nicely for me to have the date of the book 1666 since there's a 1 in the date, unless there's an additional meaning or reference. Perhaps it's the ocd in me. One of my college professors once told me that I'm anal retentive. And yes, he used those words.

Just wanted to start off by saying I really enjoy your analysis videos, especially your videos on The Ninth Gate. I also want to note that at 1:35:24, the segment about the "mercy killing" engraving, the executioner really resembles Balkan and the monk who is praying on his knees really resembles Corso. Of course, at the end of the film their roles become reversed through a mysterious demonic intervention, Balkan prays and Corso executes him out of mercy. This leads me to believe the "chess by night" engraving also foreshadows that Corso (commoner) will have the upper hand playing Balkan (king) in his sadistic game. Corso slowly gets very close to solving the riddle of the Nine Gates, closer than Balkan ever could, and this internally enraged Balkan that a common book dealer could have a much better understanding of hidden occult knowledge than he did. Throughout his dark journey, Corso learns a great deal about himself and finally overcomes and beats Balkan at his own game (at night) in a castle towards the end. Also, the shape of the window frame in the "chess by night" engraving and the window frame in the castle that Balkan tried to summon the devil also look really similar. So the "chess by night" engraving could also be interpreted as "the student becomes the master" or "by winning the final earthly game, the true master will be revealed." Edit: Also want to add that in the "mercy killing" engraving, Corso is depicted as a monk, someone who is enlightened and has great understanding of secret knowledge, while Balkan is depicted as a brutal executioner who knows nothing but violence, arrogance and greed.

The 9th Gate : It ends as it all began, the story is about the timeless story we call life, where the present and future are pages of an old story, life apparently playing out as willed by its author...its characters simply a higher entites ink on a page....an immortal author who writes men into existence and decides their fate with ink...so the real question is who is the author? The Author of the book is none other than the lady, the girl who he keeps bumping into. She wears green to reflect rejuvenation and fertility. She's the author and she is a reference to Babylon. The protagonist is the beast, he is the knight in the first engraving, he is also the one who had been burnt at the stake. It was him who in his coalition with Babylon had penned down her story. He was the vehicle which she directed, her means to her ends He was the cars she used, he was the weapon of her choice, and he was her sacrifice...which is represented by his falling on the bed during the satanic ceremony which is also an altar, showing his destiny to be the one Babylon had already set apart for herself He was the lover, her first lover, the dragon which she rode And she rode him again in front of their home, in front of the gate, which is symbolic for Babylon itself, being the gate to the heavens His whole life was already penned down, he was simply living her will, a car driven, a beast ridden The end of the movie is also the beginning, he simply returns home, to Babylon, to where it all began, for that is where it can all end. Her features are a mixture of male and female. She is the true conductor of the train of life, the pilot on the plane, the hidden hand behind the wheel Everyone's attempting to control, but it was her all along, who had everything under control, she had never, and never will, relinquish control. Shell station, the icon, maybe a reference to Aphrodite, to Venus, to Ishtar, who arrives fully formed. A goddes of both war and love, fertility and destruction. The protagonist is always smoking, symbolic of hell, symbolic of his own end, where he was burnt at the stake for heresy, here he is back again to finish what he had begun, what Babylon had begun, their consumption through fire...the fckn end There are two main characters, the protagonist and the lady/girl. The story revolves around the number 9, which itself is simply 3 sets of 3s, three being the trinity. I've seen the movie just yesterday but there seems to be a constant repetition of three. There are three books There are three owners The owners were in three different countries The protagonist traveled to each using three different modes of transportation (Vehicle, Train and Plan) There were three different types of Vehicles used (Motorcycle, Sports Car and SUV) There were three oranges that fell down the stairs in Paris There are also three main female characters involved (one of which was the girl) There are also references to gates Where the protagonist finds the gate open for him (the 2nd book and and the owner of the 1st book)...then there's the castles gate The protagonists surname means runner that is he is akin to the beast the harlot sits on. Green (clothing, jewelery, car) 3 disguises Head Scarf/ Helmet/ Red Sports Car / MotorCycle 3 x 3 (3 oranges down stairs, two lead, one rear), 3 owners, 3 countries (USA, Portugal, France), 3 modes Train, Road, Flying, 3 vehicles (Motorcycle, Red sports Car, Green SUV) Country : 3 countries Castle : a reference to babylon Hotel : a symbol of Babylon as well Bed : also an Altar Gates : a reference to Babylon being the gate to heaven Riding : the sex is symbolic of the harlots riding of the dragon/beast as shown in the final engraving...the protagonist was the beast, the dragon, the vehicle, the runner, and she, Babylon was the director, author and string puller, she held the reins Also the city NY is also called by some as Babylon, which is the city the protagonist is from A New New York will stand soon though

In the Ninth Gate, the Delomelonicon represents not an ascent into a paradise but rather a descent into Hell where the final card is one's embracing of the truth in love. It is deceiving because one flips the pages and expects progression or resolution like most books. It represents the knights journey as the Devil is usually representative of aristocracy and stands opposed to all nobility. The aristocracy often does not understand the struggle for resources and its violent potential. They see it as a threat. This nightmare book is a warning to the more noble struggle. The king is the poor man and his struggle is dirty. The aristocracy is the rich man watching and holds all the keys.

I note that when Corso is comparing the FARGOS copy the hanged man is LCF in his book (Corso makes a chart). Yet when Bernie is examining BALKIN's copy the hanged man is AT and in his death he is hung by his left foot. The Baroness has the LCF copy, by the time Corso & Balkin find out Bernie is already dead. Also, while Liana is attacking Corso, that's when Bernie is murdered. Liana seems to think Corso has it on his person, so Balkin is the murderer. Plus, he strung him up wrong because his plate is not LCF. Online depictions of the 6th plate are wrong- the credit AT and depict hanging by the right leg but that is the LCF one.

But given the dark nature of the story and the source, are you sure he isn't descending through the quippoths instead? Or is the road to power absent of morality, save for what one brings to it themself, and could be viewed either way?
