If you are looking for a lightweight, active midlayer, then the Ventrix is a great jacket. If you just need something to keep you warm, I would suggest a down or synthetic insulating jacket (TNF makes the Thermoball series and the Summit L3). The most straightforward way to layer would be 1) a cold-weather, wicking base layer with a close fit so it can be worn underneath 2) an insulated mid layer in the form of insulating outdoor pants and a down or synthetic jacket. 3) Last, it's good to have a waterproof outer shell in case you need to keep rain/snow off your mid layer. Other important items are gloves, a hat, a facemask/buff/scarf to cover exposed skin, and warm socks. Enjoy Tromso, that sounds awesome!

the North Face is using an 80 gram synthetic insulation while the Arc'teryx Atom LT Hoodie is insulated with a 60 gram synthetic insulation. That means the Ventrix is likely warmer than the Atom LT Hoodie.

The hood is smaller on the ( non summit ) Ventrix. Chest area vs stomach is bigger on the Ventrix.

You can definitely wear this with a heavy pack! Just be careful, as over a long period of time the pack's harness could stress the jacket's seams or abrade its fabric. Thanks for watching, stay tuned!

Unlike sleeping bags, The North Face (and most brands) doesn't provide temperature ratings for jackets. This is a lightweight insulating layer, so its probably not the best single jacket for super cold temperatures. What it is good for is high exertion activities in cold weather, where you need breathability and ventilation but still high performance insulation. If I was going to go hiking at -20 C, I would definitely have a few other layers along with the Ventrix Hoodie.

It depends a lot on the conditions. We'd bring this along as an insulating layer underneath a shell or as an outer layer on a warm day on the hill.

Yes, this is an excellent lightweight insulating jacket for winter.

It's best to follow the instructions on the tag, but a gentle cycle, with a front-loading washer and drying on low should work. Definitely recommend using something like Nikwax Tech Wash instead of standard detergent.
