Review: The North Face Casaval Hoodie

In recent years there's been a boom in active insulation. Yes, it pays to be cynical about trends in the outdoor industry, but this is one that we're fully on board with. These lightweight, versatile layers are fantastic all-rounders, capable of being worn throughout a wide variety of activities in a similarly broad range of environments. Whilst The North Face set up the Casaval Hoodie as a 'mountaineering jacket' and a 'mid layer' I'd actually say that its scope is significantly greater than that. Since its arrival, we have worn this jacket for pretty much everything.

I’m a huge fan of my Caseval. I’ve owned multiple L3 Summit Series midlayers and picked up the Caseval when it was first released. Good for cold cragging days, or as an outer layer for hillwalking. Then for Scottish winter climbing, I layer a summit series L2 fleece underneath and GTX L5 above.

How does the material hold up? I also wanted to buy it since it was first released,but couldn't find any user reviews about it. From my research,all of these jackets( Patagonia Nano Air,BD Vision Hybrid,Atom LT )suffer from pilling cause of the materials being so thin.I plan to use it for mountaineering,so i'll be carrying a backpack most of the time.I read reviews about the other jackets i mentioned,that the all get pilling from the shoulder straps and the jacket will get holes pretty fast.. How's the Casaval? I'm also a huge TNF fan,i have the Summit baselayers,Futurefleece ,Summit softshell Chamlang pants and L5 jacket and pants.

5:41 Should mention that the Atom AR isn't really an equivalent based on the amount of insulation and warmth. Would be closer to an Atom LT or SL which are priced cheaper than the Casaval.

You’re probably right, but there’s still not much in it price-wise - at least not with the Atom LT - which is probably the most similar spec and RRP £220. That said, none of them are cheap!!!

how is the jacket in the rain? does the fabric get wet and soggy in rain? thanks for the video.

If you wash/proof it then it’ll shrug off a small shower, but if it’s outright rain then it will get pretty wet. On the whole I’d always recommend washing layers like this properly (ie Nikwax Tech Wash) because I’d you do then they’ll absorb a lot less water. They’ll also dry substantially quicker after washing too.

I’m usually a size medium and the jacket I’m wearing is a size medium too. Overall I’d say it’s true to size, but definitely has an active fit, so feels more like a mid layer than a traditional jacket. Hope that helps!

You're testing my memory here!! I'm pretty sure I was wearing an old Mountain Equipment Headpoint Tee underneath a Montane Protium Lite Hoody. Hope that's of help!

What is the difference between this and older summit l3 ventrix or they just change the name to Casaval

Disclaimer: I haven't used the Summit L3 Ventrix, so can't comment from personal experience; however, looking at the specs they certainly look very, very similar. There may be some differences that aren't described, such as cut, but on paper they're certainly quite close to each other. The Casaval has higher percentage of recycled materials though, which is worth mentioning.

I think a lot of brands are charging what they can get, not what it’s worth. I’m sure it’s brilliant and versatile, but ouch!

It’s tricky isn’t it, because I know that supplier costs have gone up, therefore what these brands are charging goes up; however, I guess your point is more to do with how much they’re making (and I suspect they’re making quite a lot)!!

You’re comparing the wrong Arc’teryx jacket to this one. Compare the proton to this

You're quite right, although they're all very similar, but we opted for the Atom because we (rightly or wrongly) thought it was the one most people would recognise the name of - hence make what we've said more relatable.
