@@andrasbiro3007 I miss the monster/adventure of the week format. Shows like TNG, SG1, and the X-Files, where outside of 2 parter season finales and a loose show spanning plot line like "the Borg want to assimilate everyone and we run into them a couple times per season" every episode was a standalone story you didn't need much if any context to understand.

The best-selling Blu-Ray and 4K UHD physical media are older movies and TV shows. Physical media has been making a comeback in the last few years.
@G360LIVE
@G360LIVE 5 ай бұрын
That's why companies are continuing to release older movies on 4K Blu-ray. I just got the two Ah-nold Conan movies in 4K, I got Darkman coming in next week, and I already pre-ordered Aliens, The Abyss, Major League, Mean Girls (the original movie), and The Crow. Some people keep saying that physical media is dying, but as long as old and new movies keep getting released, I think physical media will retain at least a small niche that would represent a nice bit of profit for companies.

Of the golden era of TV, the Breaking Bad universe is the one that survived nearly flawlessly. It's kind of amazing over 12 seasons of TV split between two shows (I count BB 5A and 5B as two seasons damn it) that it never got bad, never even touched modern audience stuff, and ended with the strongest final season I've ever seen. Literally the worst season in the franchise is BB Season 2, and that's still leagues above everything else.

DS9 is honestly my prime example of how to do a diverse cast correctly and how to write strong women that aren't Mary Sues. Kira doesn't get brought up enough when discussing great female characters of the 80s and 90s: Highly capable, but flawed. Has a very good reason to have so much combat experience. Has made morally questionable or bad decisions in the past. Starts with things to learn, and actually evolves rather than starting perfect. An A+ template IMO.

I just finished rewatching the 1st season of Netflix Daredevil, and I gotta say, watching a show this good was a breath of fresh air from the smog of mediocrity that is the modern TV shows. The writing isn't the most inane bullcrap you've ever seen and things are actually happening. Every episode plot progresses, storylines get set up, previously set up storylines get resolved. Characters make sense and act like real adults. All of that happens in like a dozen 45-50 minute episodes, not 5-8 30-40 minute ones. And I have said nothing about acting or production quality. The show doesn't look cheap at all, unlike all the newest CGI "eh-screw-it-we-will-film-the-whole-thing-on-a-greenscreen-and-cobble-it-together-in-post" slopfest.

If you want to see what DEI has done to Marvel in the most clear way possible go look up the writer and director and showrunner credits for the Netflix shows like Daredevil. Now compare them to the credits with shows like Secret Invasion and Echo. It goes from like 50+ credits minimum experience to people who literally have no industry experience at all. And then they will strawman there being no lack in quality, or act like you're blaming a specific protected group rather than admitting encouraging hiring with no experience is a bad thing.

In one of Disney's 2023 earnings calls Bob Iger referenced Bluey as an example of successful Disney+ programming. None of Disney in house productions come anywhere near Bluey's ratings. During the 2023 actor and writer strikes Iger said Disney could always get outside content, and that' exactly what they are doing in 2024, because Disney can no longer produce watchable content in-house.

On top of the ideologies being bad in new shows, I think it was Sanderson when watching the last episode of WoT in season 2, who said the issue is they keep going for "cool" scenes instead of story. People don't really remember cool scenes, they remember the story, and it's what keeps them coming BACK to the show. When the actual story DRIVES you to that cool scene, it becomes memorable because of the pay off. But if it's just "cool" scenes without that drive, it's forgettable, and people aren't going to want to actually watch anymore.

One thing I've noticed in modern TV and movies: Talent is optional for the roles. I've been terribly disappointed with modern Sci-Fi's because the characters are only as intelligent as the writers. Actors don't need to be geniuses, but writers and directors at least need intelligence and actual reference material to whatever they're trying to represent. Most Sci-Fi's get renamed at my house to "Stupid People in Space", "Stupid People After the Apocalypse", etc. and fantasies like the Willow TV series renamed to things like "Angsty, Horny Teenagers LARPing". That Lost in Space remake on Netflix is a perfect example of really stupid people writing "geniuses". Mr. Navy Seal is a pushover with no sense of survival, tactics, leadership, discipline, or anything else that a proper one would embody. Mrs. Top Scientist/Engineer/Whatever she's supposed to be is an unhinged, emotional wreck. Their kids have all been dropped on their heads as babies, or adopted from drug-addicts. The people picked to carry humanity into space are all idiots, and it's because the writers are idiots. By the end of the show, I was hoping the one cool thing - the Mass Effect Geth robot - would go berserk and just end the entire roster of characters.

It isn't like all modern anime is bad or anything, Frieren is great, we have Goblin Slayer (but I admit I haven't watched the new season yet) and Zoom 100: Bucket list of the dead is very entertaining. It is just that we currently doesn't have a really good mecha anime, those comes in trends. Let's hope we get one next year and maybe that the current smug overpowered Isekai trend dies down a bit (In another world with my smartphone is one of the worst shows I ever seen). Yeah, it is fun to watch some trash now and then but there is a limit and 10 or more total garbage Isekai shows in a year is more then enough to last us a decade.

When Shad mentioned his kids enjoying the new Percy Jackson series, I couldn't help but think from my perspective how lucky those kids are to have a dad like him. I inherited my love of books and reading from my dad and he's the reason that I'm so deep into Science Fiction, Fantasy, and history like I am today. Boxes and boxes of books all over the house and stored elsewhere when I was growing up. That said, I can't imagine being the child of someone like shad, who not only loves that stuff but lives and breathes it and uses it as a part of making his living.

I always laughed at the Golden age of television claim that hack influencer/ journos would push when describing what was really the declining quality of tv shows in the 2010s. Breaking Bad was solid (but had a predictable ending), Walking Dead went woke as its source material did and went on too long and Better Call Saul was a snoozefest.Game of Thrones was always boring d&d neck-beard bait. I look back at old shows and films from the 80s, 90s and 2000s, and man they were so much better. Once dvd rentals went under, streaming became the norm and now that they started trying to phase out physical releases, things turned to sh*t. Movies and shows being woke "current thing" nonsense since 2015 has seen things tank dramatically.

If you want to know what happened to TV shows, games and movies, basically this: WEF companies like BlackRock funded ESG initiatives. Parent companies took the investment money then forced DEI on every studio under them. DEI guidelines (I highly recommend you go look up the ones for a. studios for example) outright not only mandate what is on camera with strict quotas, but staff at all levels of a production (including show runners, directors, and head writers) and actively encourages you to hire people with no experience (direct quotes!) that meet the requirements to find 'fresh talent.' Thus if you compare older shows like Daredevil to newer shows like Secret Invasion, the experience drops from 50+ minimum to 0-4 student films.

@@manxome65 The changes made to everyone were bad (especially giving Emond’s Field the CW treatment), but the strict gendered nature of the One Power is the literal reason for how the world was set up in the novels. Older shows had messages and tackled some big topics, but it was subtle and done within the confines of the show, you had to actually figure it out for yourself what it was talking about, even when they discussed things like alcohol, smoking, drugs, and abuse they warned you before and usually came out at the end to talk about the seriousness of the topic and how to get help, it wasn't all the time and then they'd go back to entertaining .
