Lifelong A's Fan here - almost 40 years. This here is the reality of the situation. I have said the same things - you make the all star team - you get traded. and they blow up on other teams. The art of Winning is ignored by the art of cash hoarding. When a team that gets $60 Million dollars just by existing - still have the lowest payroll in all of sports. Raising season ticket prices unjustly. Raising parking prices. Unjustly. How is that on the fans? To fight through and leave dinner off the table at home - in favor of some $17 helmet nacho bowl? Naw man. You nailed it here. Athletics fans aren't foolish. But the general public thinks we are. Hell - they raised ticket prices for the 2nd boycott game - they even censored the audio and signs and yet the fans are the problem? When's the last time you heard any team ever do that? Sad times all around. We are losing our team to an unproven, unpolished - waste of time.

Never-the-less fans bought upper deck seats and sat in the lower bowl before the upper deck was closed fully aware the lower bowl seats would be available. Over the decades, even after the Finley glory years of three world championships, the A's have always been in the lower quarter of annual attendance, even when they did make the playoffs. The fair weather fans would attend the playoffs only. Being the second banana in a larger market is not necessarily better than being the first banana in a smaller market...

People seam to forget the Bay Area market prior to PacBell Park. It the 32 years that the A’s and Giants shared the market prior to the Giants opening a new park the A’s outdrew the Giants 17 times. I remember going to games at candlestick with only 9K in the stands. MLB/Fans outside the Bay Area like to spout how this has been going on for 20 years. The issue is not black and white. Since Fisher/Wolff purchased the A’s they have tried to relocate the team. Ownership spent over decade trying to move to Fremont which was voted down and to San Jose which was ultimately blocked by the Giants/ MLB. Now the city isn’t blameless but in the early 2010’s the city proposed 3 sites the A’s rejected because they were so focused on moving to San Jose. It wasn’t until 2016/2017 that the A’s returned to negotiate with Oakland and originally picked a site that was no available in Laney College (both the college district & city weren’t told about this until the school board rejected the A’s) basically wasted a year with that plan. Then the A’s finally selected the Howard Terminal Site on the water and the A’s insisted on a 55 acre baseball district with commercial, residential and retail space which only drove up the cost. Even then the city pushed the project forward only for the A’s to pull out the week before they were scheduled to meet with Oakland for final negotiations in april and now the A’s are content with a 9-acre leased ballpark. The cherry on top is both Don Knauss (Clorox CEO) and Joe Lacob have stated they would like to purchase the A’s and keep them in the Bay Area. And before people start going on about it’s hard to build in California. The warriors, rams and now clippers didn’t have any issues building new stadiums in California. During the Haas era the A’s were one of the flagship franchises in the American League.

This was a show of force by MLB and John Fisher to show everyone that the fans don't matter and that the owners can and will do whatever they please wrong or right. It's heartbreaking to lose our team like this ESPECIALLY when we have the will and a way to build a new waterfront stadium at Howard Terminal. Las Vegas should have been given an expansion team and the A's should've stayed HOME. MLB is going to lose a LOT of fans behind this & it's all their fault.

The Spanos family did the same thing to Charger fans by taking them up to L.A. because of the projected jump in team value by having them be up the 5 freeway. Of course Oakland is not NY or LA, but it's the closest you're going to get lol. It's actually a big market and the East Bay is larger that SF's western peninsula. Only larger spot is the South Bay in SJ. If Oakland had a waterfront ballpark it would suck some of that SJ fanbase backup to Oak and wouldn't let SF monopolize it as it's doing. PLUS the larger population in the North Bay has easier access to get to Oak than SF. They could even ferry from Vallejo's terminals straight to Howard Terminal. You also have the bleed over market of Sacramento which naturally was more pro Oakland than SF for decades. The central valley can shoot straight into the East Bay with Oakland. Oakland just has very cheap owners with Fisher and previously with Davis. It's not that Oakland is not viable, it's the owners who are not viable for the market they're in. They can't afford it or simply refuse to pay.

That was not because the company wanted to leave. That was because they were being robbed into bankruptcy. The city instead of making laws that stop crime. Make laws that promote crime. Why would any team want to stay in the worst city in California. The Raiders and the Warriors both left. Now the last pro team left in Oakland is finally leaving. "On any given Sunday" what this term means(yes I'm aware the saying comes from football but it applies) is why the moneyball system could never work. You can't accurately account for determination or attitude. Because on any given Sunday, even chumps can be champs. And if you got a team of solid mid level players, sure you do well during regular season play, but you don't have anyone that is likely to take a lot of chances(players like that get used to doing a little more than enough to keep their jobs) and you fall behind because every other playoff team steps it up and your guys plateaued in August.

No, A’s ownership had decades to fix the stadium situation. Virtually every pro sports team in California built their own stadium. The Warriors, which Iakland supposedly “lost” built their new arena just on the other end of the Bay Bridge and you know how much money SF gave the Warriors to build in SF? Answer: Not a single cent. The Warriors, Giants & 49ers all built their stadium themselves with private financing and not any public money involved. Hell, even the stadium for Fisher’s MLS team was built with 100% private financing. In SoCal Dodger Stadium, The Forum (former home of Lakers & Kings), Staples Center (current home if Lakers, Kings & Clippers), the $5 billion SoFi Stadium (home of Rams & Chargers), two 25,009 MLS Stadiums (LAFC & Galaxy homes) and the $2 billion Intuit Dome (new home of Clippers opening in 2024) were all built with private financing and not a cent of public money to build those stadiums. So, please explain why all those other pro teams could successfully foot the bill to build their own stadiums, but John Fisher deserves a huge taxpayer gift of a stadium built by Oakland. It appears that you are supporting a billionaire corporate welfare leach. The fact that Fisher can’t / won’t foot the bill to build his own damn stadium demonstrates why his team is so unsuccessful and lost 112 games and those other California teams that used their own juice to build their stadiums are far more successful than the incompetent John Fisher. John Fisher was born on 3rd base and he has you believing he hit triple. Keep on kissing that billionaire ass and maybe some change will trickle down to you.

I see where you're coming from, but at the same time, the City of Oakland wasn't really helping the situation either. Former mayor Libby Shaff (spelling?) was instrumental in making the A's staying there almost untenable. Requiring them to build a stadium, and also help finance low-cost housing to appease the city agenda, was a bunch of bull. A baseball club shouldn't be held accountable to solve the socio-economic problems of the world. That's the city's job, yet Shaff was trying to pass the political football onto them. If they wanted a stadium, they were going to have to pull all the city's strings first. Screw the city of Oakland I say. Let a baseball club worry about baseball, and nothing else. I believe Las Vegas will give them that chance without any special "social consciousness" strings attached.

John Fisher’s Howard Terminal proposal was much more than just the stadium. It was a 12 billion dollar real estate development with less than 10% for the cost of a new stadium. It included 3,000 new housing units which kicked in the low income housing required by state law.

Oakland came through in the end. At first I agreed with you until I knew more. Oakland did their part. 1) it was a $12 billion project with a lot of stakeholders at Howard terminal, such as environmentalists, the railroad, the terminal itself, requiring a lot of money and a huge land giveaway 2) Oakland in the end raised the money the A’s requested, plus some. They went the smart route getting mostly National and state grants, so that it wasn’t a huge burden on the city. 3) the team settled on Howard terminal in early 3019. Momentum in the project was delayed due to the pandemic. By 2021, MLB offered to waive the relocation fee and alas Vegas became an option. Considering the city of Oakland made good progress not much later, the city of Oakland never had a chance.

If the A's were to stay in Oakland, then the city would have to put forth a $ investment. Instead the city chose to do nothing. Grants are nice, but anyone with knowledge of municipal finance knows that grants alone wont be enough to finance a ballpark. And there was no certified EIR, entitlement of the HT property was never voted on by the city council and no construction blueprints or finance plan. MLB and the A's saw that there was no path to a stadium in Oakland.

The low housing was required by state law, it's fish boy's fault for wanting to be a housing developer with absolutely zero experience in that sector

@@guybythebay1439 But it wasn't a real estate development that Fisher had to build all at once. It would have been built over a period of time, a decade or so, with revenues being generated by the easliest development paying for the later developments... Build as you go, not all at the beginning...

I know where there’s a ton of land right on the strip to build! That huge cancelled billions of dollars project that was cancelled and Steve Wynn bought the land. Sorry Oakland, your owner is so douchey for doing this. Since 2000 the A’s have the 6th most WINS!

The Raiders wanted to build a new stadium at the Coliseum but the A's sat on a 10 year lease. Mark Davis wants nothing to do with this ownership. We shall see.
