With the upcoming prequel "The First Omen" coming in April, I figured now would be the perfect time to dive into the franchise starting with the 1976 classic.

There's a few Star Wars related facts with the Omen. (A bit off topic, I know.) Without The Omen being a huge success, Star Wars may have never been made. Fox were in trouble, financially, and profits from this were ploughed into Star Wars. Which ended saving Fox from oblivion. George Lucas was impressed by Gil Taylor's cinematography so he phoned Richard Donner to ask about him, hiring him for Star Wars. Liz Moore, the poor unfortunate young lady who you alluded to. She was involved in a head on car collision, while being driven by special effects supervisor John Richardson in Belgium driving to the set of A Bridge too Far. She had created the first Stormtrooper helmet casts, also created the tables in the milk bar in A Clockwork Orange. The Channel 4 documentary The Curse of The Omen is on KZfaq, and is worth a watch.

I suspect that, at the time when this came out and people weren't so accustomed to horror movie formulas, revealing Mrs Baylock's sinister intention from the get go works well in that it lets the viewer know something is indeed _very_ wrong, yet no specifics of the overarching plot are revealed at that point. Saw this as a little kid in the 1970s ...my sister and I were raised Catholic, so The Omen definitely spooked me. Another production anecdote re the film is that shortly after Gregory Peck had signed on, his son killed himself. Although grieving, Peck nonetheless didn't back out of The Omen.

You hit the nail on the head about the initial interaction between Baylock and Damien. That scene always bothered me, and I never could quite articulate it until this video. It feels too heavy handed in a movie that uses subtlety as it's driving force. I deeply connected with Kathy's inner torment in my first viewing, at age 20. That aspect of the movie actually stuck with me the most, alongside the inevitable trauma those kids must have had to live with after witnessing the hanging at the birthday party. I know it's a very oddly specific detail, and never addressed, but that was deeply disturbing. I want to also add that Robert is, indisputablely, narcissistic. His stubbornness and insistance about never revealing the adoption to Kathy is part of what breaks her down. He buries it in himself, to the point where he doesn't think twice about Damien being Kathy's when Brennan first confronts him. He wanted to push her bodily autonomy regarding her choice to abort aside, because his own stubbornness was more valuable to him. Peck's performance is flawless, because you truly empathize with Robert, instead of noticing these awful traits. This is really a wonderful movie, and one of my favorites.

When I was a kid, we were over at my grandmother's house one evening. We kids were watching TV unattended in the living room, while my parents, aunts, uncles and grandma were talking in the den at the other end of the house. What came on TV, was The Omen (1976). We watched the whole thing. Then it was time to leave. The big old house was mostly dark (you know those narrow creaking halls, blind corners, looming doorways, etc you find in old houses). The front yard was entirely dark (the area was nearly-rural back then, no security lights or streetlights). We kids tried to stay in the narrow wedge of light thrown across the yard from the front door, but it didn't quite lead to the car. And then dogs started barking. Dude, I just can't tell you how that was for a ten year-old...

@@RocklinGraves I thought it was until I experienced it the first time. on a flight in 83 with my mom. Then after things settled down the guy in seat next to us who was an everyday flyer said it happens all the time. Then years of flying later myself I've had it happen a bit. My mom later said it sounded like someone on wing smacked the plane with a 2x4. Lol It was still pretty sobering for a 14 year old. Then again my mom was 50 and it freaked her out pretty good as well.

I’ve always loved this movie. The creepy vibes and horrible deaths are just a big plus. But one of the most horrifying things in the film is that elevator in the Italian hospital!! That thing is TERRIFYING! How was that a thing?! Could they still exist? You can see part of it at the 14:56 mark, but you have to actually watch the whole scene in order to experience it in its entirety. Does anyone out there know if they still have elevators like this? 😮

Great review! The Omen got me when I was 8 or 9, so around 1984/85. Watching it on an old 12" black and white portable Pye TV, I was a church going kid who loved the talk about angels and demons within the Old and New Testament, so the religious nature of this had me hooked. The music still puts a chill down my spine now. Pure terror poured straight into your ears. This was playing on ITV and they were showing the trilogy over 3 weeks. Needless to say I was responsible for my own fear of the dark for the rest of my childhood... Those movies made me seek out more horror and my love for those films and the genre still stick with me to this day, even though the dark holds no fear for me now.

She's A tragic character in the remake too but I think the subtly of her death in the remake is better than the more flamboyant death in original I mean I guess they explain it away like she jumped herself rather then her being thrown like what happened but its more creepier in the remake with the nanny doing the air bubble and us and the mom being forced to watch it going through the tube IV thing and go into her and of course that messes her up and obviously dye but that can be more easily explained away but I guess this could be too lol

I was struggling to hold onto this movie the whole time, and then the guy got his head entirely separated from his body, with not a drop of blood in any shot, and his head bouncing off a pane of glass like a basketball, and I fully checked out. I understand it was of the time, but like…they could’ve had some blood. It all came off goofy to me, and that sealed the deal.

*edit*. Apparently I was somewhat right. They tried infants first but the troop didn't seem to care, so they put the alpha in the car. Which is strange the troop didn't react to the babies. I've seen vervets and macaques get very angry over humans having any baby monkey. I always heard it was an infant baboon in the car. I would think putting a large, aggressive male, sedated or not, in a car with a woman and small child would be way too dangerous. And Lee Remick was a woman who would flat out refuse to do a stunt she thought was too dangerous.

One thing I want to say is that when this movie came out, in 1976, all the Bible scripture wouldn't have felt pretentious or out of touch because Many more people would have been very used to hearing Bible scripture, and it wouldn't have seemed strange to hear it in a movie. Way more people were religious and went to church on a regular basis. Going at least every Sunday would have been very common. If you notice, a lot of people who were young when this came out will say how much this movie (and The Exorcist, in 1973) impacted them - especially if they were Catholic. It only feels out of touch for us, in 2023, to hear so many Bible talk because religion doesn't play as big a part in our modern society. Probably to our detriment😬.
@RocklinGraves
@RocklinGraves Ай бұрын
It’s not that bible scripture feels out of place in movies, because some of my favourite movies HEAVILY use it. It’s the context of it being used in conversation where someone’s trying to convey a really important point and is doing it in a convoluted way. Also The Exorcist is one of my all time favourite movies and I don’t find any of the writing out of place there

I don’t disagree that Billie Whitelaw gave a good performance, but I stand by that I think it was the wrong decision to have her blatantly evil from the start. It’s a fantastic movie but every movie has weak points that are worth pointing out for the purpose of analysis. I suppose that comes down to preference but I would’ve preferred her character to be handled with more nuance.
