Welcome to Living in the Loire, we are a family in rural France, renovating previously poorly converted barns.
We aim to do most of the work ourselves, being as frugal and as eco as possible. We are learning on the job and we hope to share the skills we pick up along the way.
When possible we will take you on a tour of the region (the garden of France) sharing with you the numerous chateaux, towns and markets.
As well as the house we will be transforming the garden, bringing part of it back to its previous use as a potager. This is our dream and one of the main reasons of leaving the city to move to the countryside in France.
Join us on our journey!

That root was huge. I heard a lot of people love pointing. It might be tedious but it looks so nice.

I wasn't going to watch this, but I was intrigued by the title. Being a bit hard on yourself, it seems to me. I see you're also pretty good at strimming, or weed-eating as we say in South Africa, not to mention being nice to your kids and pretty good at skiing!

I love my motorbike! I'm riding for more than 40 years now and a few years ago I get ill. Now I'm invalid. I thought that I could never ride again. I get depressed and my doctor asked me "what will make you happy again?" I said.. my motorbike! Well... ride it then! And I can bearly walk, but I can ride! It makes me happy! I have 2 bikes. A Laverda 750 SF2 from 1975 and a Kawasaki GPZ 500S from 1995 and I love it! Now I can ride with my husband and my two sons. The all ride bikes. My depression is over. 💋

Before puting your gloves on, you also can put some white vinegar on your hands, to protect you hands, and if you touch lime, again, protect your skin with pure vinegar.

It's all looking so good, you've given the barn and walls another hundred years I'm thinking. Well done. Crikey, that was some ivy root. Just how did you kill it?
@LivingintheLoire
@LivingintheLoire 9 ай бұрын
When we had the digger I removed the root under ground so it wasn't growing anymore but this bit that was left was so stubborn and so close to the old beam I didn't want to tackle it until the beam was sorted.

I assumed you weren't the sort to resort to chemicals, so that sounds like a great 'root' to go down. Nice work, and again congratulations on how the barn has come out.

Look at that wall, the weather and time it will now withstand. You and your family should look at it now and then as a symbol of what your achieving. I bet pulling out that old ivy root was satisfying. Don't leave the skiing to long, if will be fun teaching the kids.

Brooke you do the wall very well , just like the old masters when I was little during the holidays in the village then I watch them work . Did you know that fig leaves can be used to make syrup? And from the raspberry leaves too .I saw them where you work and thought I'd tell you .Brooke in the mountains on skis is like advertising 😊What's going on with the store? I'm very glad you're paying attention at work , the glasses are perfect and the gloves too . Greetings from Bulgaria to all you young and old French Englishmen 😊🖐️🌿

Gosh the barn has come a long way! It's looking really good! Nice one Brook! I can see the meditative appeal of pointing, but I think my arms would drop off if I tried to do as much as you do! It must be time for you to come down here to go asking....plenty of the white stuff this year! Rebecca, those waffles looked so good! I haven't made them for ages! In the discourse surrounding conservation, there arises a debate over the efficacy of NHL (Natural Hydraulic Lime) compared to Hot Mix Mortar, particularly in their ability to draw moisture from stone during winter months due to NHL's lower capillary index. This debate extends to considerations of their suitability for historical buildings or contemporary structures employing traditional construction methods such as stone walls. The introduction of new materials should be approached with caution, particularly when their superiority over established building traditions lacks scientific validation. Changes to such time-honored practices ought to be made only with a thorough understanding of their potential implications. For those embarking on stonewall repairs or restoration projects, delving deeper into this subject is advisable. Nigel Copsey's wealth of information on various lime types, particularly in the contexts of pointing, bedding, and rendering, proves invaluable for those involved in the restoration of architectural treasures. His willingness to share expertise underscores a shared commitment to preserving and enhancing the beauty of our built heritage.
They are going to LOVE this!
