***** About Venison for Dinner *****
Thank you for joining us on this crazy journey! Our family- Kate and Marius plus our five kids, have always enjoyed living a homemade life whenever possible. Moving 1000 miles north in 2017 to Northern BC, Canada upped our game even more. We live on a 34 acre homestead and get a kick out of things like raising our own meat, dairy and vegetables. Theres plenty of failures, you’ll be sure to see those here too. We’re a homeschooling family who believes life is the best teacher but we do hit the books in winter. I’m so glad you’re here, I hope you stick around!
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

As a farmer, I know it’s tough losing the milk production but you’ve many more years with a good cow so try and think it’s a short term loss. Also, all farmers would ask each other for advice as generations of experience means a lot, plus we can’t be calling the vet without good need as it’s so expensive so don’t feel judged by any KZfaq ‘expert’ comments…..you’re doing a great job 😊

It's so hard when your animals are sick and milk dumping is so frustrating. I feel for you. Also I have friends I can call who know more about goats then a lot of the vets around here so I totally get that. Nothing against the vets they just work more with horses and cows. I hope the penicillin works, I need to go through my animal meds and reorder some stuff.

I'm happy to see Freja (sorry if I spelled her name wrong) running around outside in her pj's. My daughter is the same way! Your goat is just the cutest. Thanks for sharing so much on KZfaq, I really appreciate it. I've learned a lot from you being a first time milkmaid. We found out that our cow had mastitis just as we were about to start keeping the milk for ourselves which was very disappointing, so had to dump for 4 days. I can't imagine how discouraging 14 days must feel! I'm excited to see what your "creative" way to get milk from a friend is, being a fellow Canadian (pretty much parallel to you, just in AB). I hope you have some wins this week to make up for Clover being sick. 💕

I am currently watching all your videos as I juuuuust found your channel! Great idea for using a tool box. We will be bringing our two goat does on milk home in a month and I need to start a med kit. What would you say would be the most important meds and treatments to get right away? Bloat and milk fever? Or mastitis? My goats have kidded four and five weeks ago, and I am currently milling them once a day at their current farm. I have hoof trimmers, mastitis test kit, tums, iodine, molasses, etc but haven't bought actual meds yet. I am going to pick up some nutri-drench soon to have on hand.

Your vet box is very nice! We have beef cattle and recently added a milk cow, we make sure to include ob supplies because heifers. I include gloves, lube, ob chains and sutures. I also try to keep an assortment of general first aid, vet wrap, scalpels, ointments, betadine, gauze... I think it's easy (and sometimes needed) to end up with the whole vets office, lol. This will be my first dairy calving, so thanks for the enemas tip :)

I wish you lots of success getting the channel where you want it to be. By the way, I came across your channel from your collaboration with Bri.

I feel like people that don't raise large animals tend to be quick to assume that the vet is the ultimate in care. That may be the case with small animals but with large animals, I find a vet is not always a better option than an experienced farmer. I actually had a vet tell me with regards to a pig issue that I should find an old pig farmer because they would know much more than the vet personally knew about pigs and then the vet would write the script on whatever medication I needed. My vet is well versed in cows because she runs a dairy farm too but she'll come right out and say she isn't the best source for pig information. For a lot of people, the only big animal vet they can get is a horse vet and their experience is not universal to all large animals. Some other things I like to keep on hand....tubes for collecting milk samples (like in the case of mastitis), blu kote, Vetericyn spray, LA 200 sprayed directly into the eye works well to treat pink eye, pulling chains for calving, I like to have vitamin E powder on hand for my dairy cow to prevent mastitis or other infections, oil of oregano in pigs' water is excellent to help with diarrhea at weaning. I have corrid and sulfa boluses on hand but have yet to need them. We have oxytocin for difficult pig farrowing....its amazing what you acquire over time. I don't have a bloat treatment on hand, but that is an excellent idea and will be added asap!

Loved seeing your vet kit! I've never cared for dairy cattle, but have grown up raising/calving beef cattle my whole life (with dabbles of goats and sheep). To me, your vet kit looks awesome! The only two additions I would suggest (and you may already have these) are a 5 ft cut of stiff garden hose. We've found that when we have a case of dry bloat, putting the hose down and working it a bit can let off a ton of air and give immediate comfort. If the frothy green comes out, then we know that a bloat medication is the only thing that will help. The next is a medication (people have personal preferences on this and I don't believe it can be used in dairy cattle in the US) but Enrofloxacin (we use the Baytril version) is fantastic for any respiratory issue in cattle. We've been told by our vet to use it for cats and dogs also. We have a dog that has issues with bladder infections and it does wonders. Also with cats with URIs. It's a multi-animal medication that I really like to have around. I guess I would also add iodine spray. We use it for calf navals after they are born, and any wounds or scrapes on cattle to try to dry them up. I just recently found your channel and have been on a deep dive! Tons of information and recipes. Thank you ❤️

You can give the phosphorus enema IV for milk fever? It is sterile? I lost my cow last fall the day after calving. I treated her with a CMPK oral paste, and had a neighbor come give some IV. She got up and down several times, but died that night.. I wonder if she’d have benefitted by additional straight phosphorus…… I am determined to not let that happen again.

Yes you can give it to the cow for milk fever. It is what our vet recommended. I'm so sorry you had this happen. We have been in the same position and you feel very helpless. Best thing I've done is found a lot of mentors for help in the valley.
