The Overmind is the realm of the gods. They have been working to build a godlike humanity, idealustic, noble, beautiful, wise and even powerful. While there has never perhaps has been an Age of through and through Overmind creation but there have been individuals and certain epochs of time when certain sections of humanity did come under the influence of the Overmind gods. Each of these beings however gives a certain angle to creation which it tries to make as the sole power to govern mankind. This works for a while but over a period of time an imbalance is created due to an excess in one direction and a diminution of others. We have seen already how some spiritual experiences that have originated in these domains below the Overmind have led to the formation of certain religions that, however helpful in their own time and space to refine and sublimate certain tendencies in humanity have led to an eventual degeneration with frightful consequences. This is what Sri Aurobindo calls as the old fiasco and therefore does not want another great (even the greatest) world religion as nothing of the creations below the Overmind can remain forever immune to invasion from the forces of ignorance and there eventual degeneration. The Supermind however is a consciousness of Unity where each and every aspect of the Divine Perfection is spontaneously harmonised by the Law of Truth that automatically puts each thing in its own true place. Hence the dissolution of the Overmind creation that was beginning to descend and take shape in the disciples especially between August and November 1926. Sri Aurobindo prefered not to proceed along these lines and instead proceed to the Supramental Manifestation that alone can integrate and transform the forces of Ignorance and our humanity into the Divine Perfection it is meant to be. A godlike humanity is at best an Intermediate step but the Divine Superhumanity is the final consummation and the only one that can establish a Divine Life upon earth. Here is how the Mother explains the difference. 'Supermind and Overmind * Sri Aurobindo's work is a unique earth-transformation. Above the mind there are several levels of conscious being, among which the really divine world is what Sri Aurobindo has called the Supermind, the world of the Truth. But in between is what he has distinguished as the Overmind, the world of the cosmic Gods. Now it is this Overmind that has up to the present governed our world: it is the highest that man has been able to attain in illumined consciousness. It has been taken for the Supreme Divine and all those who have reached it have never for a moment doubted that they have touched the true Spirit. For, its splendours are so great to the ordinary human consciousness that it is absolutely dazzled into believing that here at last is the crowning reality. And yet the fact is that the Overmind is far below the true Divine. It is not the authentic home of the Truth. It is only the domain of the formateurs, all those creative powers and deities to whom men have bowed down since the beginning of history. And the reason why the true Divine has not manifested and transformed the earth-nature is precisely that the Overmind has been mistaken for the Supermind. The cosmic Gods do not wholly live in the Truth-Consciousness: they are only in touch with it and represent, each of them, an aspect of its glories. No doubt, the Supermind has also acted in the history of the world but always through the Overmind. It is the direct descent of the Supramental Consciousness and Power that alone can utterly re-create life in terms of the Spirit. For, in the Overmind there is already the play of possibilities which marks the beginning of this lower triple world of Mind, Life and Matter in which we have our existence. And whenever there is this play and not the spontaneous and infallible working of the innate Truth of the Spirit, there is the seed of distortion and ignorance. Not that the Overmind is a field of ignorance; but it is the border-line between the Higher and the Lower, for, the play of possibilities, of separate even if not yet divided choice, is likely to lead to deviation from the Truth of things. The Overmind, therefore, does not and cannot possess the power to transform humanity into divine nature. For that, the Supramental is the sole effective agent. And what exactly differentiates our Yoga from attempts in the past to spiritualise life is that we know that the splendours of the Overmind are not the highest reality but only an intermediate step between the mind and the true Divine.'

@@AuroMaa 🙏 Thank you. Can you describe what was the creation forming at that time that was of the overmind, which Sri Aurobindo wanted to avoid at the ashram? Also, in daily life, is it the psychic coming in front that will help us align with the Supermind, instead of Overmind? Until we reach that point, we may be working below the Overmind. I am reading books I found at the ashram bookstore. Currently reading "Emergence of the Psychic Being". I am curious as to what the Mother and Sri Aurobindo wanted to avoid. Thank you.

The Overmind creation that was brought down in the Ashram before the 24th November 1926 manifested itself in the sadhaks in the form of brilliant experiences and the emergence of certain powers that belong to the domain of the gods. The Mother describes it thus: 'Sri Aurobindo had given me charge of the outer work because he wanted to withdraw into concentration in order to hasten the manifestation of the supramental consciousness and he had announced to the few people who were there that he was entrusting to me the work of helping and guiding them, that I would remain in contact with him, naturally, and that through me he would do the work. Suddenly, immediately, things took a certain shape: a very brilliant creation was worked out in extraordinary detail, with marvellous experiences, contacts with divine beings, and all kinds of manifestations which are considered miraculous. Experiences followed one upon another, and, well, things were unfolding altogether brilliantly and... I must say, in an extremely interesting way. One day, I went as usual to relate to Sri Aurobindo what had been happening-we had come to something really very interesting, and perhaps I showed a little enthusiasm in my account of what had taken place-then Sri Aurobindo looked at me... and said: "Yes, this is an Overmind creation. It is very interesting, very well done. You will perform miracles which will make you famous throughout the world, you will be able to turn all events on earth topsy-turvy, indeed,..." and then he smiled and said: "It will be a great success. But it is an Overmind creation. And it is not success that we want; we want to establish the Supermind on earth. One must know how to renounce immediate success in order to create the new world, the supramental world in its integrality." With my inner consciousness I understood immediately: a few hours later the creation was gone... and from that moment we started anew on other bases. Well, I announced to you all that this new world was born. But it has been so engulfed, as it were, in the old world that so far the difference has not been very perceptible to many people. Still, the action of the new forces has continued very regularly, very persistently, very steadily, and to a certain extent, very effectively. And one of the manifestations of this action was my experience-truly so very new-of yesterday evening. And the result of all this I have noted step by step in almost daily experiences. It could be expressed succinctly, in a rather linear way: First, it is not only a "new conception" of spiritual life and the divine Reality. This conception was expressed by Sri Aurobindo, I have expressed it myself many a time, and it could be formulated somewhat like this: the old spirituality was an escape from life into the divine Reality, leaving the world just where it was, as it was; whereas our new vision, on the contrary, is a divinisation of life, a transformation of the material world into a divine world. This has been said, repeated, more or less understood, indeed it is the basic idea of what we want to do. But this could be a continuation with an improvement, a widening of the old world as it was-and so long as this is a conception up there in the field of thought, in fact it is hardly more than that-but what has happened, the really new thing, is that a new world is born, born, born. It is not the old one transforming itself, it is a new world which is born. And we are right in the midst of this period of transition where the two are entangled-where the other still persists all-powerful and entirely dominating the ordinary consciousness, but where the new one is quietly slipping in, still very modest, unnoticed-unnoticed to the extent that outwardly it doesn't disturb anything very much, for the time being, and that in the consciousness of most people it is even altogether imperceptible. And yet it is working, growing-until it is strong enough to assert itself visibly. In any case, to simplify things, it could be said that characteristically the old world, the creation of what Sri Aurobindo calls the Overmind, was an age of the gods, and consequently the age of religions. As I said, the flower of human effort towards what is above it gave rise to innumerable religious forms, to a religious relationship between the best souls and the invisible world. And at the very summit of all that, as an effort towards a higher realisation there has arisen the idea of the unity of religions, of this "one single thing" which is behind all these manifestations; and this idea has truly been, so to speak, the extreme limit of human aspiration. Well, that is at the frontier, it is something that still belongs completely to the Overmind world, the Overmind creation and which from there seems to be looking towards this "other thing" which is a new creation it cannot grasp-which it tries to reach, feels coming, but cannot grasp. To grasp it, a reversal is needed. It is necessary to leave the Overmind creation. It was necessary that the new creation, the supramental creation should take place.' [end of the Mother's quote] In brief the Overmind Creation builds a certain relationship with the Divine through the gods and the powers that govern various aspects of creation. Whereas the Supramental Creation opens for us the inner doors directly towards the Divine. Secondly the Overmind sees the Divine Truth not in its totality but one or the other aspect through a certain angle of vision leading to the formation of sects and religions whereas the Supermind sees the different aspects of the One in a harmonious unity wherein each has its own place in the totality. The Overmind refuses to integrate aspects of human life, the material reality for example, whereas the Supermind assimilates and integrates. Not experiences but the authentic and complete change is the insistence of the Supermind. There are other differences but these are important ones. Nothing is to be avoided except show, sham, hypocrisy since the Supermind is Truth and will bring out the hidden until one is compelled to see. All is to be lifted up, sublimated, purified and transformed.
