The only boat left fishing out there! In this episode Graeme takes one last trip out to sea in an old wooden boat before the worst of the winter sets in...Its a lumpy day at sea but being a veteran of "Man Alone" fishing films he grinds through the trip and gradually gets a few good eating fish .He also shows an old school lure called a Split-tail Boston Mackerel ,and in addition a special lead weight he uses for deep trolling that he bought home from Canada on a trip to British Columbia's Vancouver Island...Will it work on the UK fish ?? Watch to find out...Plus..his famous Theory time, where this time he ponders the lack of Deer seen in the last year..Finally a rare shot he grabbed in his back garden of two predator birds side by side. One a fish eater, one a meat eater..Rarely seen together, but which species are they ?...Enjoy...

Greetings from Ireland. I enjoyed your video on the TV Screen today. You are right in your conjecture that the albacore tuna run along the South Irish coast at this time of the year. They do. No one really goes after them though. Late October and early November they run and not too far off the coast and you can catch some big ones, even 300lbs trolling plastic pink squid lures. Pink seems to be far and away the best colour to use to the best of my knowledge. The deer can be seen rutting in the Dublin mountains in November at Ticknock just above the city. Saw Mr. fox on TV passing No. 10 Downing Street recently. They are all over Dublin City and suburbia having been drawn in by the municipal dump in Ringsend back around 1980!

Nice one Graeme nice steady day plenty of fish. One downside no life jacket , as we all know the older we get the slower we are. I did have the pleasure to fish with you in the 80s with Chris Martin at Newhaven we had a great day you took plenty off photos One was the front cover of the challenge of wreck fishing was myself swinging a large ling into the fish box . They were the days we had plenty of cod into high 20s . Stay safe looking out for next video.

We have had a huge reduction in our Swans, here in Norfolk, I should think 2/3 have succumbed to bird flu. I have just been along the upper part of the river Bure today and you can smell the stinking carcasses rotting away in the riverside vegetation. It is thought that this virus may mutate and affect the animals that will feed on these decaying carcasses, like Foxes. It may have already happened, in the case of Otters anyway because their numbers have decreased big time…

Hi Graeme, say hi to Mike ( I bought a wood following his encouragement). So I own a wood in Shropshire and can tell you we are over run by Roe deer, also squirels ++++, badgers and foxes! Plus 2 nesting buzzard birds of prey. Can't speak for more urban settings but in a rural ancient wood setting there is still hope for continued wildlife.

Graeme, try solid barrow tyres. They're a bit heavier, but no more bad tubes or flats in the middle of nowhere. Are your English deer more shy than American white tail? Deer around here seem to be one of the creatures that has been flourishing. Some fellows even do urban hunting with bows, I just take my camera these days. A lot of my beloved rural areas are getting built up these days. Numpties moving out of the big city, bringing their city way of doing things and never realizing that they are bringing their problems with them. They'll pay huge amounts of brass to have a poorly made assembly line house built... When right down the road is a grand old lady of a farmhouse that could have been put into stunning condition for less money. We see it in the more populated areas as well. Businesses sprawling, houses getting torn down, neighborhoods gone. Perfectly fine buildings that are vacant get passed by, and 300 year old maple trees get the axe. All because some twerp at corporate wants to spend wads of dough for a brand new, bespoke location instead of remodeling a storefront for less money... (Sorry for the rant.)

I haven’t caught him asleep since, but he still come around now and again.

I'm a fan of the Frankenrod - got a few of my own. When I go vertical jigging I like to leave them down a few feet off the bottom and when one gets hit I leave it for a little bit and I've found it tends to attract a few more customers. I think it's to do with them seeing one guy thrashing around feeding and they see the other jigs flashing so they get in for their bit. Just like fishing for dolphin fish. When you hook one you get another bait in the water because his mates will be close behind looking to see what he's eating. Loving the Goon Show references. Where I live we used to see kangaroos in the yard and hopping down the street on an almost daily basis. Now, 8 years later, it's rather rare to see. The local area has been built out radically and they just don't come around anymore as a result. I also credit it to the fact that more homes and people equals more dogs in the area.

Hi Graham, Reference birds, there is a virus effecting birds in the UK, I normally have a flock of 50/100 sparrows feed and roost in my garden they empty my seed feeders every few days, but those feeders are lasting a week or more now. I understand from one of my brothers that farmers have had to have 1000's of chickens/Turkeys slaughtered because of this virus. Keep up the good work and get Mick out fishing with you and don't forget Jack.

I live in the Dorset countryside Graeme, our population of deer seems ok..if you're getting more houses and people then there's bound to be pressure on the wildlife..also a big build up of deer usually results in a cull sooner or later, we had a large herd of fallow that built up over the years but they've been thinned out recently..but I will say our mallard population has completely disapeared, and I put that down to corvid predation on the nests in the early spring

I agree that there is a noticeable reduction in wildlife. A reduction in insects can be at least partially blamed on the overuse of pesticides, both on farms and peoples lawns (gardens). They are close to the base of a long food chain. Urban expansion brings with it pets such as cats, which are notorious for killing millions of songs birds and small mammals per year (Google Australia Feral Cats). Also dogs which have, if let loose, been known to pack, chase and kill deer. I have read and posted numerous articles on my group EARTH on this topic. It was nice to see you catching Mackerel, as the government here in Atlantic Canada has placed a limit on them due to shortages. Also nice to hear you have a vault of videos to help us get through this winter. Thanks.

@@nicholaskemp2246I am only an interested ex-farmer, not a vet, but my understanding is that like all diseases (and I am sure you have much reported info on Covid) not every bird is killed by it, not every bird is infected either, but it could well be that, again like Covid, there are different strains in different areas that are affecting some species more than others. I cannot give you a definitive answer. I do believe that there are increasing numbers of predators of small birds apart from any diseases or natural events that decimate their numbers. Was the long hot spell in summer prevalent in your area? Did the small birds rear less young? There are numerous reasons why there is sudden population decline in wild creatures of specific species. Your local knowledge has to be superior to mine. Perhaps you can suggest a specific reason if you condider various possibilities.

Hi Graham I go fishing and shooting on the wild life front there has been a risen in foxes for a few years now and deer . Has there been any live stock put on the fields near you? This will effect deer and push them away . Maybe new fences put up ? As for the fox it could well of been hit by a car and run off a died in cover possibly. I am sure it will not be long before more foxes turn up again as there is a good number around most place . We are also in Hampshire and there are lots here . I go wildfowling (duck shooting ) and there has definitely been a drop in numbers with the ducks and geese the last couple of years . Around here anyway . I thing bird flue has had a effect also the weather . As soon as we had the freezing cold weather this winter there was a lot more ducks around. Weather and the fact there are more people year on year moving into the country side or it being built on is not helping. Seems to be more predictors around nowadays so unfortunately that’s not going to help . The birds on the bird feeder will not get eaten by the kit but with them flying around it will scare the other birds off this might be why your not seeing so many birds in the garden . I have just started watching your videos they are fantastic keep the good work up mate really enjoying them .

I really enjoy your show, thanks so much for your enthusiasm. I've never fished, but I would love to. Would you be up for a "Totally Awesome Beginners" show?

Deers around here are either hit by vehicles or eaten by our recent overseas guests.
