Portland State is the forgotten (unless you live in Portland) child of the Oregon State University system. It's an FBS school that, honestly, isn't even strong in the FBS. They make the playoffs *maybe* one year out of every ten, and do you know how hard it is to *miss* those playoffs?!? PSU is entirely education-focused, and the Vikings' fan-base is so small that if you told most PSU students that they even *had* a football team, a lot of them would be surprised by the news. Tickets for students for home games are free, and yet the average Vikings' home game gets *at most* a thousand fans, most of them travelling fans of the other side. Scheduling a powerhouse like the Ducks against the Vikings is like scheduling the Lions against the Christians.... (Source: I went to PSU....)

PSU got a nice payout for playing the ducks, and the ducks got a chance to get their players on the field to get some much needed reps. There is nothing wrong with scheduling an easier game first just to get your team comfortable on the field together.

For Portland St, it's a paycheck. For Oregon, it's a tune up.

Smaller schools get a big payday by coming to play bigger schools. Oregon uses it as a way to work on their playbook and Portland State or the smaller schools come for the money to help their program and the experience of playing much higher competition
