From what I heard, the actor playing the police officer waving his gun around wanted to see if Ed Wood was taking it seriously or would call him out on it, so he purposely waved the gun around, and to his surprise, Ed said nothing about it.

In Quebec Canada, there are still little fenced squares of ground, consecrated by the church, out in the woods along paths. They are leftover from colonial times and are there (supposedly) so that is you were chased by a werewolf or vampire through the woods, you could jump over the low fence to the holy ground and be safe, because they can’t get you there. Simpler times indeed.

14:30 - I just noticed this from watching the blu-ray where it gives you the option for subtitles that contain trivia for the movie. Look at how the man's cape starts to fall off and how non-Bela Lugosi quickly puts it back on. It's a testament to how Ed Wood didn't believe in doing second takes unless the first take was completely unusable. I can't unsee it now, hahaha.
@McBlah1976
@McBlah1976 4 жыл бұрын
At first I thought it was just the stand-in doing strange hand movements for his attack. Sure enough now all I see is him reaching for the corners of the cape collar. I wonder if he muttered anything as it happened, perhaps it rhymed with "oh spit".

There's so many little moments like that in this movie, it's simply fascinating to try and find them all. Tor Johnson clearly being stuck whilst trying to climb from the grave is another classic one. I think the best "stand in" moment from an Ed Wood movie comes from "Bride of The Monster" where Bela Lugosi's stunt double can clearly be seen wearing huge platform boots (like something from the 1970s) to appear the same height as Bela.

I was on the set of Ed Wood the day Bill Murray was there, the wrestling scene. Great guy who doesn’t tolerate fools or complainers. When background started moaning as the amount of takes grew higher (Tim Burton standard) he turned , half-serious, half-joking, “Hey, at least you don’t have to eat a hot dog every single take!” People got a laugh, no complaining after that.

I can't be too hard on either Ed Wood or this movie. For one thing, Wood, in addition for being (from what I've heard) a really nice guy, seems like someone who loved movies and put his heart and soul into making movies despite utter lack of talent and resources. In a strange way, its like a child exitedly showing you its crayon-drawings. You just have to love them. For another, damn it, "Plan 9" is _not boring._ It _entertains,_ probably not in the intented way, but it still manages to bring joy to people over 60 years after its release. There are countless movies which literally had several thousand times its budget and are better by any measurable standard... but are just dull.

Hey Mark, you once said you watch all these terrible movies so we don't have to. Please review Caligula (1979). It's considered one of the most epic fails in the history of Hollywood. The actual version has a 210-minute runtime, but the 156-minute version is the most common one. Every person who worked on the film, including the entire cast and director, have separated their names from it and refuse to talk about it. From Wikipedia: "Caligula is notable for being one of the few films Roger Ebert ever walked out of-he walked out 2 hours into its 170-minute length after feeling "disgusted and unspeakably depressed". Please watch this disaster so we don't have to! Thanks!!

Bela wasn't addicted to morphine or methadone (that he replaced the morphine with) at the time the test footage, that was used in the movie, was filmed. He had detoxed and been in treatment the year before. He was still using alcohol to self-medicate the sciatic pain he was constantly in, that was the lasting effect of injuries he had suffered in World War I as a Austro-Hungarian soldier on the Russian front. Bela's real name was Béla Blaskó, he used "Lugosi" as a stage name, as a tribute to his hometown Lugos. Today it's spelled Lugoj and is now part of Romania. Back then, it was still in the Kindom of Hungary, as a part of the Austrian-Hungarian Dual Monarchy. WWI redrew a lot of borders on The European map and made a lot of people "foreigners" in the places they had lived all their lives. Bela was one of them. The first four decades of Lugosi's life, before he did any of the things he's now remembered for, before he came to New Orleans, working as a sailor on a merchant ship to pay for the passage, would make a fascinating TV series. He had a wild, dramatic, and sometimes tragic life!

I like to think that Chris Nolan included the lack of day/night continuity in the stock exchange heist scene in "The Dark Knight" as an homage to "Plan Nine from Outer Space".

I owe a big thanks to my high school friends back in '84 who got it on VHS because The Misfits had a song called "Plan 9" and that's what introduced me to crazy movies. Oh and one of them worked at a video rental shop. One of those little Mom & Pop stores before Hollywood, West Coast & Blockbuster chains shut em down.

You clean up nice, dude. But yeah, this movie is a treasure chest. You can watch it a dozen times and always find a jewel. Like, for instance, I was watching it with my dad once when he noticed that the map in the military office was made by a railroad company. And in later scenes the logo had been removed! Good times.

8:34 Field officers are normally in a headquarters located behind the battle front. If the officer is ranked below an O-4, they are with a forward observer detachment so they can call in fire to a forward location. That seems like a real world example. I served in the 3rd BN 4th Marines. Ooh Rah!

I always felt kind of sorry for Ed Wood. For some reason I feel more for him than other hacks like Neil Breen or Tommy W. He had passion and a desire to make something good but had no talent. Glen or Glenda might have come close to being something decent but Wood just couldn't pull off what he must have seen in his mind as a deeply personal story. Really a shame how he ended up.
