I want to add that there is only ONE mediator between the Father and us, which is Jesus Christ, but we implore the Saints as a mediator to Christ, an example of this is when the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) interceded when the wine ran out at the wedding in Cana, and her son listened. We all worship God but we are a single flock, both those already asleep and those still on this earth. The ones already with Christ want nothing more than our salvation, for God is love and compassion, and they are in fervent prayer for our sakes. @kevinmiller6443 that's not how any of it happened. First of all, all of the churches (the 4 that make up the EOC and the church in Rome) have been around aince pentacost. None of them can be said to have "come first." When the RCC or EOC make that claim, what they are really talling about is which one of them deviated from the central tenets of the faith. The sticking point for both of them is Papal Supremacy, of course. The earliest Christians appealed to tradition instead of scripture. That's because at first, there was no scripture beyond the OT. Which books should be used in addition to the OT was itself a matter of tradition. God didn't leave a guide to which books were divinely inspired; the Church had to decide that. (Scripture is therefore a tradition unto itself, so it really makes no sense to speak of "using scripture" vs "using tradition," any more than it makes sense to say "I will use my car, but not an automobile.")

I'm not orthodox but I'd like to think I know a bit about it. -First and foremost is the position of the Bible, the orthodox views it as authoritative but not as the final or only authority as most Protestants view it. They view scripture as a part of Church tradition which is just as authoritative as other Church traditions. -The Orthodox allow for prayers of intercession to Mary and other Saints. This does not mean worship, but they believe that the saints can intercede and carry our prayers to God. This is largely rejected by most Protestants. -The Orthodox believe in apostolic succession, the idea that all of their clergy can be traced in an unbroken line back to the apostles. -The Orthodox teach that the bread and wine in communion is the true body and blood of Christ. Some Protestants do teach this as well, but most Evangelical protestants believe it is just a symbol. -Also Orthodoxy teaches salvation is not a "once saved always saved" like many Evangelicals believe. Salvation is a lifelong process and one can lose their salvation. This is a start but is something to think about!

Now I am new, and I would highly recommend talking to a priest. 1. Orthodoxy does not necessarily teach that works save. It’s more that good works are helpful. There is no simple answer so I would refer you to someone more learned than I. 2. While the Bible is inerrant, we do not believe that it is the sole source of teaching for the church. Holy tradition (which includes teachings of saints, the Bible, our oral tradition, the liturgy, and more) is the source for us. 3. We value monasticism greatly. 4. Salvation is not a one time thing (like evangelicals teach), it is a struggle. 5. Our services are drastically different. 6. We have holy water, icons, blessing, and more. I hope that helps. The Tradition actually predates the Bible by at least 170 years when a Bishop and Church Father named Irenaeus did the heavy lifting of determining “True” Text from “Heretical” text in the second Century in the Roman City, now Leon France. If you can’t believe Irenaeus was inspired by the Holly Spirit the best argument you have on the Word of God is that what he and other Church fathers provided is incomplete at best because there were countless other manuscripts and collections of writing that are not in the Bible precisely because of their work. Having any confidence in Biblical Truth requires the understanding that it is the product of the Holy Spirit’s inspiration on men, the same mean in many circumstances that through their equally Inspired and commanded by Christ ministries gave us the complete Church that includes Word, Ritual and Tradition. There is no way to reasonably suppose that First and second Century Apostles were wrong and that their errors survived until Martin Luther and Calvin miraculously revealed the errors using the Book that they created after what 14 or 15 centuries. Also you can’t equate Roman Catholicism with Eastern or Oriental Orthodoxy’s, they are not any more similar than the Reformed Churches are to the Roman Catholic Church. Christ is Born, Glorify Him!

@@Xverol second Vatican council speaks of tradition and scripture being equal. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us how we should view scripture. 2 Timothy 2:2 speaks of traditions. These traditions are speaking of Jesus Christ. Paul boldly stated that he knew nothing but Christ Jesus. This is what believers need to know. Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father.

I believe the Georgians have the largest canon, as they are the only ones who include 4th Maccabees. At least amongst the eastern Orthodox, if you include the oriental Orthodox, it's the Ethiopians by a considerable margin.

@@costakeith9048 I didn't know the Georgians included 4th Maccabees. I was told by someone at our church that the old Slavonic bibles have 4th Maccabees. I've never actually read a Slavonic bible so I took his word for it.

There is no dogma on non-orthodox baptisms so it depends on your local bishop and their discretion. Commonly I noticed that Russian church's are more likely to do corrective baptisms. You have to understand the church politics to understand why some do and others don't Constantinople is a ecumenicalist church and wants unification of all church's therefore they accept baptisms of the heterodox. Russia dislikes ecumenism and only sees orthodox baptisms as valid.

The first time I attended an Orthodox liturgy was in 1979. At that time, confession was required every time before taking communion, at least in the parish I visited. Only two people actually received communion there that day. I was told that most people there only took communion about four times a year. I started getting serious about Orthodoxy around 2004, if memory serves me correctly. At that time, nearly everybody in the congregation took communion every Sunday--and they didn't go to confession all that often. This was in two different parishes in two different dioceses. Nowadays it seems like the priests expect people to go to confession maybe four times a year, but to receive communion weekly. Every priest I've gone to for confession acts as if it's an annoyance to him. I suppose if they were Catholic priests, they might accuse me of scrupulosity. None of the pastors I've been familiar with held regular hours for confession, so you must beg them to fit it into their schedule. The only time I've ever seen a period of time set apart for the hearing of confessions is on Lazarus Saturday (i.e., the day before Palm Sunday), when they will hear confessions for a few hours AFTER liturgy. This is in preparation for the holy anointing administered on Holy Wednesday. I knew one priest who would hear confessions (if necessary) AFTER liturgy on Sundays, but he encouraged the penitents to receive communion during liturgy--and then confess their sins afterwards. He called it "taking communion on credit."

No the non Orthodox baptism is not valid in any Orthodox Church. The rule if you decide to become Orthodox is that you have to be baptized again the Orthodox way, unless you were a Papist then you need to do Chrismation again and sign a paper that you reject Papism. That's is valid also for Constantinople...

You are correct. That thought was what started my looking into Orthodoxy, and I do not regret it.

As far as I understand it, Protestants generally don't consider all other denominations to be apostate. So the difference between all the denominations boils down to preference or conscience. Catholics and Orthodox see all other churches as apostate, so they see the large number of denominations as a problem.

@@Svetty00 I think all three churches see each other as apostate- Protestants, Catholics and Orthodox. It isn't rare to hear some protestants compare Catholics to antichrist or say that they're evil. I believe that Orthodox are spared the same rhetoric only due to smaller size of the church. And this too makes sense. All three churches, broadly speaking, insist on the same thing- Jesus is God- that is truth and love embodied. This is why we all put supreme importance on truth and we follow the church that we do. We think that our church is true and right. If we didn't, we would join another church or make a new denomination in the case of the protestants. Truth is exclusive by its very nature. If A is true, then B must necessarily be false. This is simple logic. We all preach that devil is the deceiver and liar, so it isn't rocket science to see why we all call each other as false teachers and apostates. I do believe that truth is supremely important and I tried to be as careful as I can when picking a church to join. I believe this is case for all who take God seriously. Still, we differ in the churches we pick. As limited, sinful and fallen people, it seems necessary that we will differ. This is why while I picked the Orthodox Church, I still enjoy listening to both Catholic and Protestant preachers. There are so many good ones. Bishop Barron on the Catholic side and I love Tim Keller, Mike Winger and John MacArthur, just to name a few. If anyone is interested, I couldn't recommend Jonathan Pageau strongly enough. Not because he is Orthodox, but because he is a deep thinker that see the world symbolically. It's a unique way to help us see the world properly.

But if scripture says “not everything is in scripture” and if scripture says “hold to the oral traditions we have passed on to you” and if scripture says the church was started in Antioch and the gates of hades shall not prevail, and the church still exists today as antiochian orthodox. Why would anyone reject that? It really is mind boggling. Especially when you consider if you lived in 4th century Egypt or 8th century gual or 12 th century Greece you were either a heretic or orthodox. I don’t want to die in heresy personally. It’s a scary thought.

Ranging from the unreasonable and vain (non-believers, scoffers, mockers) to, in my opinion, perfectly reasonable concerns like: despite Christ's clear instruction that the gates of Hades will not prevail against His Church, the statement is never linked to a geographical location, Antioch is one of countless simultaneous church plants, and heresy and falling away in the earliest church of apostolic times literally starts from almost day one (otherwise we wouldn't have half of the New Testament, written specifically to admonish wayward churches). And for all the wonderful things that came from the Antiochian church, Antioch is also one of the few places Scripture singles out as being an occasion where two Apostles of Jesus Christ come to face-to-face disagreement, with Paul going so far as to highlight a whole segment of the Antiochian Jewish Christians as being carried away by 'hypocrisy'. So simple logic dictates that the antiquity and location of a church wouldn't definitively be reliable guideposts for what's uniquely true or not.
