There is one thing to be embedded as a journalist with a friendly nations military and be on the front line it is very admirable, yes. But this is being embedded with an "active enemy" this is a whole extra layer of danger and vulnerability to be exposing themselves too, essentially in the hands of the kremlin to get this out to us, it seems like it will be a unique and insightful documentary.

The issue is not that people "want to hear only one side of the story". Many of those who support Ukraine would very like to get some kind of report from what is going on in the occupied territories (in fact, many Ukrainians scan the Russian military telegram channels just to get those tidbits), the problem is that the Kremlin carefully hand-picks and gives access to war reporting only to their trusted propaganda crews or very patriotic military reporters. It is nearly impossible for a western journalist (be they as impartial as possible) to get this sort of access. I would like to believe that this guy did some honest reporting, we'll see..
@strange6973
@strange6973 2 ай бұрын
Of course! This goes for both sides of the conflict. Information warfare has become finely tuned over the years with entire military units dedicated to it (the British 77th Brigade as an example). However, I can say - at least anecdotally - that people (quite literally) don't want to hear the other side of the story and even become aggressive when you suggest something that goes against their finely crafted narrative. This is true even (and maybe more so) if you can back it up with evidence from the a supposed trusted source such as the US national archives! None of us are immune to propaganda. Going against the grain under such a caustic media ecosystem, I believe, requires a degree of courage which we don't often see. It's much easier to simply go with the flow - especially when it might impact one's career. We are all of us at the whims of powerful decision makers who have access to information we likely couldn't even fathom.@@pavelvodov1516

Most people in the west understand that this war has a history before it. And they kind of understand the position of Russia. To Sean, you had a chance to let the other side speak their opinions, their beliefs and how they experienced the past years and current conflict. But there was not much story from the other side shown in your documentary i feel and if they did you immediately added your comments about clearly putin propaganda they are saying... You were all but neutral if people gave their limited opinions...It was very clear you are pro ukrainian and that is fine but it does not give a neutral documentary. I expected allot from this documentary based on the trailer but it has dissapointed me. Purely for the fact it was not neutral and most of the video we don't see the other's side story ...and if..then you had to make it look like they are brainwashed people citing putin.. Despite you appetite for lying or ignorance, a UN investigation team as well as a reporters without borders team went to Lughansk and Donetsk and found no mass killings, no mass graves, no photographic or video evidence of murder squads killing ethnic Russians, no eye witnesses that could point them to mounds of bodies. Nothing. As far as your so called "coup": Can you really call it a coup when three quarters of the population of Ukraine fought to remove Yanukovych because he went against the wishes of the people and decided against closer ties to Europe? Hence why Ukrainians called it a revolution? My thought is that you are just spewing anus juice out of your mouth.

I just watched the full documentary. It was well worth it. What struck home most was the moral ambiguity of this war. The Russians and many of the Eastern Ukrainians interviewed see the Ukrainians in the West as the aggressors. The sentiment of many Eastern Ukrainians is that this war has been going on for nine years, since the revolution in 2014. The opinion of the filmmaker, Sean Langan, is that some of this from Russian propaganda but then, how do you separate the Russian propaganda from the western propaganda ? My opinion is that Ukraine should have been left as a neutral buffer between both factions and that Companies such as Black Rock have made a fortune out of this war, but that's another story...
@beerten202

but who gets to decide that? does ukraine not decide for itself? so if ukraine joined russia should the west have invaded? its a stupid argument that russia needs a buffer by using other nations.
@Hemebean

@@beerten202 Both Russia and Ukraine decide for themselves what they want to do. If Ukraine decides to join a military aliance against Russia, that's an agression. Ukraine acting as a neutral buffer is not at stupid argument to Russia, as we have seen. For example, if Ukraine were to join NATO, that would more than double the border that Russia has to protect and would provide many potential avenues of attack against Moscow. All of this was obvious to the US who ignored Russian requests not to continue expansion and even refused Putin's requests to join NATO in 2000 and 2001. The truth seems to be that Putin has been trying to build bridges and work with the West for years but this is inconvienient (less profitable) for the US.

Russia couldn't accept that the Ukrainian ppl want to change their life and want a western lifestyle, away from the eastern style corruption and autocracy. So they brutally tried to discard the protests in 2013 and when the PPl won they funded and started a separatist war in Donetsk and Luhansk. Ukraine obviously tried to keep it's territory and Russia than proceeded to just invade and control Krimea. Since than Russia was preparing for invasion and boths sides were shooting and skirmishing since the cease fire in 2015. That's the whole story, Putin wants Ukraine to not be successful bin the westernisation and wants Ukraine to have a Russian puppet leadership what they can control like Belarus.

@@zmeu_md3831 sorry but this response is retarded. There is no EVIL. There's politics, power struggle and machinations. If you are so blind as to believe that one side is simply "evil" and the other is "good", too bad for you. Life isn't a fairy tale, there's no good and evil, no black and white. All this shit is happening for many reasons, and i believe the Russian and Ukranian people are victims of their leaders and global politics affected by the USA, NATO, China and basically everything else. I wish they'd stop and deal with this in a more civil manner... but war seems to be an integral part of human nature. Still, no - no one is evil. Both sides are faulty.

As a Russian, let me assure you, that we much prefer a soft authoritarian than a liberalist democracy. We tried that in the 90s and it was an absolute disaster. Much like the united states today. No matter your sensibilites, putin has accomplished far more than any western leader in the past 2 decades and is far more skilled a politician and strategist. He brought Russia back from the dead, he stood up to the oligarchs on the behalf of the poor. He makes western leaders look like the children they are. So keep in mind: your feelings do not matter, only russians feelings. This war was provoked by the west and the hyper agressive policies of the US. from 2008 -2022 putin tried to solve this diplomatically. Western aarogance is astounding.
