The Pace Report: "A New Path" The Marlon Simon Interview
In 2022 drummer and composer Marlon Simon was awarded the Guggenheim for Music Composition. The music that he was commission to write is now Marlon's new album "On Different Paths" now available on Truth Revolution Records. Recently in New York City Marlon Simon and the Nagual Spirits performed the new music at Zinc.This was his first performance with his band since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Marlon hails from Punta Cardon, Venezuela. While growing up in his native Venezuela, he began playing the timbales at 15. He learned by playing in the top bands incorporating many of the musical styles including merengue and salsa.A friend of his showed him a video of trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and became interested in playing and studying Jazz music. Marlon moved to Philadelphia in 1988 to study drums at the Philadelphia Music Foundation. It was move to New York City where he earned a degree in Jazz and Contemporary Music from the New School for Social Research.
As he was getting his education in New York, Marlon became a well in-demand session musician backing the likes of Jerry Gonzalez, Dave Valentin, Hilton Ruiz, Bobby Watson, and Chucho Valdes.
In this edition of The Pace Report, Brian and Marlon sit down and discuss the new record, his role as a band leader, and how his plans to re-enter the music scene after him settling in Texas after being a commercial airline pilot.
