Welcome to another edition of The Pace Report featuring trumpeter and composer Philip Harper.

During the 1980's the "Young Lions" were a new set of musicians that played, toured, and recorded with some of the architects of Black American music. It during this time when Jazz music was undergoing a major renaissance in the US and these new musicians became the new face of the culture, music, and now education of the history of Black American Music.

Philip Harper was a member of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and studied under Jackie McLean at the University of Hartford Hartt School. During his career he's played with legends like Etta Jones, Cedar Walton, Betty Carter, Little Jimmy Scott, and Harry "Sweets" Edison.

Currently Philip hosts his residency at Smalls Jazz Club in New York City with his group The PHAM Expression. We sat down to discuss his group, reflect on the life of Harry "Sweets" Edison and Jackie Mclean, and the role of leading your own band.
