The Pace Report: A Tribute to Les and Ramsey" The Joe Alterman Interview
Pianists Ramsey Lewis and Les McCann were some of the most revered musicians of their generation. Lewis played more contemporary and modern music and McCann was more experimental and used the latest technology in his recordings. Les was part of the "Soul Jazz" movement incorporating jazz, funk, soul, and world and African elements in his music. Ramsey was able to crossover to many of his diverse fans with million-selling hit records "Wade In The Water", "The In Crowd", and "Sun Goddess".
Joe Alterman has been one of the young musicians who continues to grow as a musician and understands that the legacy of Ramsey and Les was vital to Black American Music. He was blessed to become friends and mentored by both of them up until their death. In fact, Joe is now the owner of Ramsey's Steinway piano which is in his home in his native Atlanta, Georgia.
Recently Joe played a tribute set in honor of both Ramsey and Les at the famed Birdland Theater in NYC. We sat down and reflected on the lives of Mr. Lewis and Mr. McCann. How they created their own lane in music as well as how they embraced the new keyboard technology during the 1960s into the 1970s.
