Here in the Battle of Pelelieu you see another Japanese war crime, poisoning the water. According to the Convention at the Hague in 1907 and Geneva 1929, which the Japanese signed, poisoning food or water was against the rules of war. The Japanese made plane and clear that they didn't care about following the rules of war that even the Nazis followed in the Western front. BTW, did you know that the Nazis actually sent a representative to Japan to tell them to cool it on the war crimes. The Nazi official actually wound up saving some Chinese civilians during Japan's Rape of Nanking.

@@ariachanson01 The Japanese DID sign the Convention of the Hague, BUT the government (which was now controlled completely by the Military) did NOT ratify the treaty, and didn't follow it! .

Aria, I applaud your knowledge of WW2 and some of the attrocities committed by the Japanese during WW2. One very big sad note is that the people responsible for the horrific experiments at Unit 731 were not prosecuted by the US because my country wanted all their notes on the chemical and biological warfare they were planning to use against the US. We also let some Nazis off the hook because we needed them for our coming Cold War against the Russians. As it turned out the information from the Japanese was worthless but we had already agreed to not prosecute the technicians at Unit 731. I am so ashamed of the US for what we did. That travesty of justice is as bad as the experiments the Japanese did against their prisoners because we were supposed to be civilized.😢

@@michaelb1761 Because a civilized, freedom loving people (those that represent America on the world stage) let heinous murderers that tortured thousands of men, women, and children to get off Scott free. The dead are dead and nothing can bring them back but what we did remains a stain on our character for all eternity. The survivors and families suffer everyday knowing justice was not done.

While the war in Europe and North Africa was very brutal. What happened to US and Australian soldiers in the Pacific campaign was much more daunting and worse, in so many ways. Each land invasion was like Normandy on steroids. Even when soldiers had little combat on the beaches they were met with extreme gunfire inland. Many islands that was figured to be taken over (or retaken by Americans and Australians) in a couple of days, took several weeks, if not months to secure. And it did not help that Macarthur sought glory for himself, rather than safety for the men.

They used Loralei s the password in the episode about Basilone on Guadalcanal, which would be difficult for typical Japanese speaker to pronounce, like when they used thunder in Band of Brothers.

Consider that the US had to fight from Guam to Alaska and many points in between. Then we take into account that the US began fighting the Japanese immediately following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and the taking over of many island countries in the Pacific. The journey to reclaim what was taken was huge. For the US and the Autralians in the Pacific the war was much more deadly and those heroes, who fought in that war should never be forgotten.

Its over 100 degrees and nobody had any water. When they finally got water it came in used oil barrels. So it tasted terrible and made many sick. Remember them scrubbing out oil barrels?

The Battle of Pelelieu was totally unnecessary. It had been planned earlier in the war. Gen. MacArthur had insisted that he needed the Island as a staging area and that the airfield was a threat to his right flank as Japanese planes would attack his men landing in the Philippines. By the time it came for the Battle, Admiral Halsey suggested the Island be bypassed since his carriers had not seen much Japanese air power coming from Pelelieu. Admiral Nimitz and most upper Naval command agreed with MacArthur who still insisted Pelelieu be taken. As it turned out, Halsey was right. Very few working planes were on the Island and MacArthur wound up using the Island of Ulithie as a staging area. The Battle of Pelelieu began September 15th and was concluded November 27th. MacArthur land in the Philippines in mid October, a full month before Pelelieu was secured. So 2000 Americans died while 8500 were wounded. 12,500 Japanese were killed and all for nothing.😢

Macarthur saw his own legacy as being more important than the safety of the men in his and others' command. He cared nothing for anyone or anything, except for the cheers.

@@tenjed4224 MacArthur had moments of brilliance and moments of sheer stupidity. His Inchon landings were one of the brilliant ones, his underestimation of the Chinese was pure stupidity. But his worse case of stupidity was his defense of the Philippines. The Aircorp General wanted to send his bomber group to bomb the Japanese air group in Formosa who were grounded due to weather. He ordered his planes off the field to prevent them from being wiped out by the Japanese. This was hours after Pearl Harbor. More than 2 hours had passed by the time the Aircorp general got the OK from Mac to attack the Japanese. But by then the bombers needed to be refueled and the Japanese were on their way. Our entire bomber fleet was cought on the ground and destroyed, leaving our troops in the Philippines with no air power. MacArthur should have been fired. After this fiasco he had the bulk of our food and ammo piled up on Bataan even though he was warned that the Japanese could come in from the nothern end of the island. Mac felt he knew where they would attack. Well he was wrong and the loss of the food weakened our troops to the point that it cost many men their lives. Bottom line, Mac's defense of the Philippines is a text book case of what not to do.😮

@mikealvarez2322 Macarthur started out understanding why were there. He was one of the best, as you said. Then he became about himself and his own legacy. Pretty much the same with Montgomery who won in North Africa, only to let it go to his head.

Btw the US invade over 60 islands during tye Pacific theater during WW2 some battles were very short and lasted between day and 3 days and with very little resistance or not many American casualties. Then of course you have the battles that became more famous because of the intensity, the casualties, and the length of time spent in combat
