My dad was wounded on Peleliu and carried Japanese hand grenade shrapnel in his legs for the rest of his life. He also carried a hatred for the Japanese, until he got to know my wife. She’s Japanese and a super great person. I’m glad he changed before he passed away

This show really explores the mental anguish and sheer terror these guys went through. The war in the Pacific just got more and more extreme until it abruptly ended with a couple big bombs. Also 11:25 he says Nambu, which is what US troops called the Japanese sometimes. The Japanese also had guns called Nambus, namely a pistol and a machinegun

The Nambu pistol was named after its designer. A friend of mine purchased one through a mail order ad back in 1960. I believe that the Ruger .22 autoloading pistol is modeled after the Nambu.

Part of the reason this battle was such a slog is this was when the Japanese started changing their tactics away from self-destructive banzai charges. They started doing things more rationally, digging tunnels and caves to fortifying positions, doing infiltrations at night to wreak havoc behind American lines and damage morale. Japan's military had been doing things the same way for seven years, ever since they first invaded China in 1937, so it was a serious shock to the Allies when they were suddenly doing things completely different. Also shocking that they seemed to be instantly good at it.

As for Leckie. He was knocked back into the tree from the shockwave. Probably suffered from "blast lung" / "shock lung". ("Blast lung is caused by a shock wave generated by an explosion causing widespread damage in the lungs, leading to intrapulmonary haemorrhage.") As for SNAFU = Situation Normal All F'd Up

As you no doubt can see, this is a pretty dark, savage story. The war in the Pacific theater was a nightmare, of a whole different way than Europe. My mom told me about having dinner in NY with a Marine during the War and he pulled out his "trophies" to show them off--a fine linen handkerchief stained dark brown with blood, a bloodstained photo of a young Japanese officer with his wife and child--he was proud how he had these souvenirs of his combat experience. The Marine had no idea it seemed barbaric.

It's not Bamboo machine guns, it's NAMBU machine guns, Nambu was a Japanese weapons manufacturing company, like Colt or Smith & Wesson in the US.

They tried morphine to subdue the panicked Marine but he was so pumped up with adrenaline that nothing worked. The hit on the head was meant to knock the man out. Interesting side note: In Season 2 Episode 7, The Call of Silence, Gibbs helps a Medal of Honor Marine, played by Charles Durning, get cleared of murder charges for killing a fellow Marine who was endangering the squad of soldiers with his screaming, by hitting the man on the head during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Charles Durning was a decorated Army soldier that survived the Battle for Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge.

A little more info on the water problem they had.. you might remember Eugene and the new guys cleaning out oil drums… they used old oil drums to bring water to the next island. Unfortunately the oil drums were not cleaned proper and all there water was contaminated with oil. So it took a few days to bring fresh water from another island.

SNAFU means "Situation Normal All F***ed Up". The next level is FUBAR - "F***ed Up Beyond All Recognition". An underlying reality of amphibious operations is that literally everything has to be brought in by boat and unloaded on the beach, then carried forward to the troops - and in WWII helicopters were still just interesting gadgets. Just keeping everybody fed and supplied was a huge job and a bottleneck on the beach could wreck the whole invasion. The Japanese had it even worse because they had no way to supply themselves at all; they knew that they were going to run out of everything and had no way to do anything about it.

Something to consider watching the episode on Okinawa, the number of US casualties and the fact that of the approximately 110,000 Japanese soldiers on the island, less that 10,000 were taken prisoner were large factors in the decision to use the atomic bombs. The book Ultimate Battle by Bill Sloan is a very good account of the battle.

Flags of Our Fathers is a pretty good book concerning Iwo Jima. It didn't translate well to film. Letters From Iwo Jima is quite good though.

The Japanese continue to modify their tactics from here on out. They dig in and start to cease the wasteful banzai charges to drive up the marine losses. Nambu Machine Gun. A type of Japanese machine gun. A full rundown here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_96_light_machine_gun
