The people who think trad archery is easy haven't really started. My eyes were opened after i missed over the back of the first animal i shot at. Shooting trad bow is something to be respected.

I'll agree with that I had a recurve for a specific draw hunt we have here in oklahoma and went but never got a shot was only effective to like 12 yards killed a good buck with my compound early season the next year and decided go back recurve. My first sit I had a 180"+ buck that we thought got poached come in chasing does I flung an arrow at 30 yards and sailed it an inch over his back. That was the first time a miss made me feel physically sick, after that sold the compound and have wacked a pile since 2020 tagged out last year filled all 6 tags with it but it took shooting every single day to be able to achieve that

@@shaunculwell1989 hell yeah!!!! Sucks to hear about the first miss, but it sounds like you learned a hard lesson that day. And more importantly, u learned from it. Thanks for watching!

You definitely have to love it, myself it’s what I started with so it was easy for me to back to. However you will have those days that nothing you do seems to work. So find what seems to work for you and stick with it.

Thank you, much respect. Retired welder, decades of work, guitarist since the stones were young. There is not enough time on earth to learn it all. Started recurve 3 months ago and I'm 65. Compounds are child's play. Never give up. Really liked the comments archers!

Absolutly true. Your message is one that every beginner in trad archery needs to hear. KZfaq is full of video's of people shooting perfectly. But a beginner needs to hear that it is a journey and the price just comes over time. You have to put your effort in first. Thanks for sharing.

Your message was accurate, true , and relatable. Absolutely spot on! This is one of the few videos, that I have seen, that speaks directly to traditional archery at its core. Well done young man!

Actually this has been one of the most honest and down to earth explanations of the plight of the Traditional archer/archery journey I have ever viewed. KZfaq may not circulate it much ... but it should! Very good video brother = God bless ya!

I started when I was in Highschool, I'm 70 now. Shot my 1st bow today, a Ben Pearson 25# Power Jet Bow just for fun. Finger pull on my 50-55# bows is just too great for me now. I've tried a loop & release using my shoulder & back more. I don't get mad when I can't get good grouping. A good smooth release is important & just enjoy your time with a bow!

I appreciate this video bud. I'm on my second year of trying to get my first trad kill in Missouri. It is a mental battle but constantly in the back of my mind. I keep learning, grinding and trying to get better. Last year hunted super hard and got three opportunities...no deer. It is one of the hardest things I've ever pursued...but I'm still at it.

Its definately a journey, ive been shooting for two years on and off and I just now think I have proper form and anchor, using proper back muscles. took restarting with a light bow and watching loads of tutorials. Tom Clum and jake kaminskis videos have been very helpful

I’ve tried lots of method. Best I’ve found is a combo one from Clay Hayes where I set my gap with my bow arm. Second. Look at the spot and think of literally nothing. No mantra, no laser, a meditative nothing. No mind. Works well for me. Draw back so far. I can’t maintain it in a competition. Works great by myself. But very hard if people are talking. Might try it. You might be thinking of to much. It’s easy to overwhelm yourself. Above all remember this is supposed to be fun. Totally agree its a journey.

Very well said my man. I struggled with confidence with traditional archery for the past 3 years. I missed my first deer at 12 yards and was ruined by it. Shooting my recurve literally made me despressed because it was stressing me out so much. I avoided my compound because my friends would make fun of me. But finally I said to hell with it, and started bowhunting the way I wanted to and found great success with my compound. I never got bored with it, but after I fell into a great friend group of traditional hunters at a 3D shoot, it changed my life. This year, I am going to hunt with my recurve. I finally have found the confidence. This is not to say that I no longer fall out of confidence, because I just did last week. But I walked away, consulted my experienced trad friends, did some trial and error, and I am back on the right path. Always hunt and shoot the way that YOU like. There will always be paths to tread and methods to try. Roll with it.

Great message. That allure of the history was a great part of the pull for me as well. It led to building many bows from a young age with my brother. Gradually gaining skill and making a couple great longbows. Embrace the challenges!

Great video. Having made the switch from a compound last season, a “journey” is the best way to describe it. I love shooting it and I’m as confident (inside of 20) as I was at any distance with my compound. That said, the stick bow makes it very clear how lazy you can be with scouting, stand set ups, etc.. when using a compound. There’s a huge difference in setting up to get one inside of 50 vs inside of 20. Keep up the good work.

I’m old, at 14 my friends Dad sold me a 30@28-50” bow he said 3 things stand sideways like this and remember anchor and follow through, always remember solid anchor and follow through. I went home set up a box full of magazines about 10 yards shot for hours every night for the next year. At 15 got my first steady job put a 45 pound Super Kodiak on lay away, month and half later I had it and a dozen new fiberglass arrows with newfangled screw in points. The city had an indoor range for free at the rec center. I spent the next 2 yrs shooting hours everyday it was open on my days off six to eight hours. The second year there a guy brought in this funny looking thing with wheels on it he called it an Allen compound bow haha we thought it was funny, then his son brought one in later he called it a Jennings compound it was a little nicer looking thing, I still whooped ‘em. they made me shoot in the adult male category. I’ll be 68 next birthday, I’ve miss more deer over the back and under the chest than anyone could count. But I’ve taken my share of animals over the years also. It was never the kill it’s the anchor and follow through watching that thing fly through the air that I love. I shoot my diy 56 lbs homemade longbow and a factory made 47# recurve everyday. I’m still working on that solid anchor and follow though everyday. :) It’s better to have shot at the moon and missed then to never have tried at all. Pretty sure that arrows still stuck in that top branch of that huge cottonwood on it’s way to the moon.

I've been shooting trad for years, there are still days where I find myself struggling, whether it's my stance or release...other days I feel like I can't miss. I've learned to not take it personal on the bad days, just back up a little and take five. Most important thing is to remember to HAVE FUN!

I started my archery journey making my own self/board bows. When I started I would be lucky to shoot an arrow that didn't fly sideways to 30 yards. My first year hunting with a bow I shot over or under at least 5 does. I have taken years to overcome target panic and other bad habits. I love archery, I love building bows and helping other people get into traditional archery. This year I'm going to shoot TAC in Utah with my traditional equipment. It should be a fun time, and I'll probably be the only trad guy there. Will I shoot 100+ yards? Yes, I will. I've been practicing out to 95 yards and it's been fun to see the consistency that I've developed. I acknowledge that I would never take that type of shot on an animal for any hunting purpose, but it's just fun to watch the arrow fly.

Even those who have been traditional bow people their whole life, the whole thing is a journey or process to get to a level, like me. Then there are people trying to make the jump from Target Open Non Compound/Leverbow division to more traditional shooting, often putting some kind of small pin/T sight for hunting on the bow they have to shoot a kind of point on gap or point on fixed crawl method with the sight fixed when using the arrow tip with a Gap style of the persons choice or even a nock/marking of some kind on the string at the eye level for a point on fixed crawl is the way to go in hunting as the sight can get out of alignment easier then one thinks.

Absolutely true. I've been playing with a recurve for years but just decided thos winter that I'm committing to the stick bow. I'm getting better but it's one step forward 2 steps back. Then one step forward.ive thought several times to he'll with this I'm selling it and getting a new compound. By the next day I'm shooting the recurve again. Can't say for sure I'll hunt with it. I may have to use my old compound because if I don't feel I can confid3ntly kill an animal I won't take a chance on wounding. But I will continue my journey and I will eventually switch to the stick boqw.

I love them too but that doesn't change the fact its a struggle. I have really good days and real bad ones. Missed 8 deer this season. Made a couple poor shots over the last few years that would be money with training wheels. Any Journey or endeavor worth going for is a struggle. thus.... struggle stick.
