The point of Hebrews 12 in its entire context is really emphasizing that God does and will chasten His children. The children are expected to receive it and grow in obedience. Verse 8 is a true statement, but we really don’t know exactly how God chastens us. How our fathers chasten us compared to God’s chastening looks a lot different. He chastens without sinning, and He does it in a variety of ways. You may not recognize it due to ignorance, stubbornness or continued rebellion. God may be very patient and forgiving. He may be delaying the chastening. At other times, we know exactly when the chastening comes, but we also can’t look at all bad and assume it’s God’s chastening. A good rule of thumb is to expect chastening when you do wrong. God may even let you live with the conviction and guilt. Sometimes you even correct your own actions, and God need not do anything. I hope this helps. Just because you know you’ve done wrong and haven’t had noticeable chastening happen yet is not an indicator you aren’t saved. The Holy Spirit brings you into a relationship with Jesus. He gives you the desire to love and serve God. He also gives you the desire to pray, and read the word. He is our helper and teacher here on earth. He helps us find our purpose in our walk with the Lord. Without Him, we will struggle, become discouraged, and eventually fall away. So be certain you have received Him, because we need to depend upon Him to make us more like Jesus everyday. When you sin, the Holy Spirit will convict your heart, and will lead you to repentance. The Holy Spirit will give you the power and strength to sin less and less. John 14:25-26 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
