Ticketmaster has recently been in the hot seat over its handling of ticket sales to some of the world’s biggest concerts, including Drake and Taylor Swift. Tough questions are being asked about the company’s practices. Fans say they’re fed up with the high cost of tickets, while the former CEO says they should stop complaining. Plus, a reseller gives us the inside scoop on how he scores tickets and sells them for a profit.

TM is fine tuned robbery. I've heard artists be shocked to find out how much their own ticket prices are. Which implies TM sets the ridiculously high prices, not the artists. Also heard that TM absolutely refuses to do anything about scalping. Which in today's digital world would be incredibly easy to atleast curb if not outright eliminate. The list goes on and on. You know what I've never once heard about Ticketmaster? Anything good from anyone ever. Ticketmaster should go down in history as the biggest hindrance to live entertainment of all time.
@robbo8611
@robbo8611 7 ай бұрын
There's documentaries where you learn how Ticketmaster actually teaches and helps scalpers! You should only be able to resell a ticket two times and only then for %10 more than you paid. Not just that but no ticket company should have exclusive contracts with venues. That alone would fix most of the issues of scalping and price gouging through fees.
@shane250

@@robbo8611 I disagree. They should make tickets available BY NAME ONLY, and if you want to sell it (because you can't make it), the name can be changed once, and it will be listed for 10% BELOW what you paid for it. Having it 10% above means I can still make thousands of $ if I buy a few dozens tickets and resell them.

The Artists can opt in or out on dynamic ticket pricing. TicketMaster/LiveNation's algorithm determines the price based on demand and speed of sales. Also TicketMaster/LiveNation own 63% of the concert venues in the US, they own the food/beverage service companies, merchandise companies, etc., etc., etc. 1000% a monopoly and people are still lining up to get gouged

I work in live regional theatre which includes some concerts and plays (think a step down from Mirvish). Joey is right about 2nd shows being planned in advance. Shows are booked between 2-5 years ahead and sometimes more than that.. A second show is never 'just added'. That's a marketing ploy. It's planned.

It's absolutely predatory. I can't imagine how anybody goes to see live shows in North America anymore. To give some context and contrast, the last time I saw Roger Waters in concert in Tokyo, I paid the equivalent of about CDN$90. Not a prayer that I'd pay more than 500 bucks.

If I pay $400 to buy a resell ticket, the actual ticket price is 350, and 50 goes to ticketmaster fees. On top of that, the seller will only get 300, 50 goes to fees. So in total ticketmaster gets $100 out of nowhere

Here's a thought. Business ruining fines and penalties for malpractice. Companies are well aware of what they are doing is wrong before being caught doing it. Make it so they will be adverse to doing it in the first place. Though only applicable if the lawmakers will actually their job to protect the people and not fill their pockets in corruption instead. Going to live events under these flags are simply not worth going. Get better enjoyment from a recording or live feed. Less disgruntled about it afterwards. Good cover story this time around CBC.

30% of tickets sold with the intention of attending will have to sell or give away due to life, commitments or conflicts. There will always be a need for a secondary market. If you cant go to a show, you need a way to sell it. Also after Covid, demand for events is sky high. It was rare for concerts to have back to back nights. Seems like all artists have 2 or 3 shows, with prices still high. Imagine if it was 1 show. It would be even higher. There is an element of supply and demand at play here. Strategy buy week of the show or day of. Theres always tickets available & always desperate people looking to unload. Remember the day after the show, the digitial ticket is worthless.

I hate ticket master pricing and the process of getting a ticket. But at the end of the day, it is you as a buyer has to refuse to buy tickets when it is over price. STOP BUYING and it will send a message. But people still buy the ridiculously high ticket prices, so it tells Ticketmaster that there is a market and a need. Just my two cents.

I love that comment by Ticketmaster saying that they only take 5% of the entire amount. Rogers arena has over 17,000 seats, do the math on one night at about $500. Even at 5% that's over half a million dollars, just that 5%. I have one word...INTERESTING Ticketmaster. And Mr. Rosen? He's not wrong, however, that's called greed. And I'm guessing Mr. Rosen is fine with that. And just because you can, doesn't mean you should. He says 'free society'? So is Ireland, but maybe they like to add the word 'fair' to the 'free'.

Once they started with the dynamic pricing I stopped going to shows and live music is one of my favorite things to do and I really try to support the bands I like ( metal fan), but once the dynamic ticket pricing started, I tapped out. I follow a bunch of bands and usually get presale codes for shows and I was noticing a 300% uptick in pricing during presale, especially if there is a big waitlist. The only thing that will get them to stop is y'all have to stop giving them your money, that is the only thing they will listen to. Don't get me started on merch and merch fees.

No band or singer is worth 500per ticket, floors at the front should be capped at 400 mid to back floors 300, lower bowl seats at 200, lower half upper bowl seats at 150 with seats in the upper half of the upper bowl between 50 to 100 per seat. As an avid concert fan the most that I have ever paid is 300 for a single ticket in the 5th row on the floor in the center section. I average 8 to 12 concerts within a year 14concerts concerts in a year is the most that I have ever attended.

This is just the modern version of scalpers. There have always been people who manage to buy up a number of tickets and attempt to resell them at higher prices. Just when I was a kid it was easier for them to be caught because they had to stand outside the concert or event to do it. I've never thought it was right but I'm not sure how it can be controlled. I do agree that ticket master and those companies need to regulate the costs on their sites more instead of doing "supply and demand" pricing.

2 things need to happen: 1) Ticketmaster and LiveNation must split up, such that TM is not the exclusive ticket vendor of LN venues. This way, other ticket companies could be used at the option of the artist or promoter. 2) Ticketmaster must exit the resale business. That way they can’t double dip on service charges and they are not buying the best seats themselves and reselling for massive profits.

What is often missed is that TM is a de-facto punching bag for the whole industry, venues, promoters, and yes, even artists in some cases. Equal scrutiny needs to be given to all players. Taylor Swift has more than enough pull to force change, the fact that hasn't happened even after the debacle down here in the states tells me she's complicit in this as well. She is probably getting a cut of those outrageous resale prices because of her massive following, whereas other artists might not get such a sweet deal. Notice how the lone voices for change in the industry are the acts that don't have millions of fans crying at their feet. And at the end of the day, the former TM CEO, while very punchable, does have a point. If people suddenly decided they weren't going to throw thousands of dollars to worship a false idol on a jumbotron, the system would change in a hurry.

Platinum seat has no value in economics or society. It’s all in your head. Unless they actually give you platinum bullion as a thank you. I’m pretty sure we’re can’t be that obtuse.

Capitalism is freedom. If people want to be dumb with their money or debt, it shouldn't be everyone's problem. Let people who are financially irresponsible pay the prices. There are no obligations to buy concert tickets and concerts aren't a right and tickets can cost as much as they are worth, regardless how expensive they can get. Freedom isn't free - selling misleading/ misguided information on products and services the other hand, is terrible and should be punished. I've bought many tickets the hour of the concert for very discounted prices. Ill tell a skelper to take my 20 bucks or hold the ticket until the end of the show.
