When I was a little girl in the 70s this movie was shown in our classroom, I think 4th and 5th grades. I remember how intense the scene of him playing the piano on the window. Almost 50 years later and the memory of the feeling is still clear. 🙂 My teacher's also showed a film about Peter and the Wolf. The movie A Christmas Story, when the bully shows up, always makes me think of that, too.

Grant Williams was an excellent choice for the role. He sang tenor during five seasons with the New York Opera and even created the role of The Tenore Buffo in the world premiere of Hugo Weisgall"s Six Characters in Search of an Author. He also sang with the Robert Shaw Chorale (you don't get much better than that!) and additionally was a professional pianist. His extensive background in serious music must have helped him in the role.

Totally sanitized and inaccurate but it was made by Disney for a young audience and in those days being gay was not acceptable and considered a mental disease - we`ve come a long way since then however in some countries attitudes remain firmly in the past.

Did Tchaikovsky compose both the sad and happy endings of Swan Lake? Or did someone fiddle with his masterpiece?
@felicity1877
@felicity1877 Жыл бұрын
It depends on - what is sad and what is happy ? The first Swan Lake ending was both lovers reunited in the lake/death and the curse of the Enchanted Lake broken. This was very unusual because enchanted Princesses - or pure fairy tale heroines in general - would get their happily ever afters. Also in all of the tales used as inspiration for this ballet (such as "The Swan Pond / The stolen veil" by Musäus etc. Of course, the idea of reunion in death was considered as very romantic, but it was a Romantic taste. That is why, Swan Lake gets in later productions a happy ending, closer to the Swan Princess tradition. In my opinion, Swan Lake was inspired by Tchaikovsky's episode with Desiree Artot (and it hadn't a happy ending). But shouldn't stories be told like they should end?
