I’m so grateful to Barbie for being a children’s media that gives a genuine exposure and appreciation to ballet and the classical arts. I appreciate so much when the arts are given equal importance in children’s education, especially when they’re young. Learning to appreciate the arts as a child is so helpful in fostering creativity, empathy, and a greater appreciation for the social and cultural value of art as an expression of human nature.

Actually in this version, they use the original ending of the ballet, where the evil sorcerer is defeated,(when the Prince tears off his wing) breaking the spell, and as dawn breaks, Odette and her handmaid's are now human again. (Many productions go for a tragic ending, but I prefer this one. It fits the uplifting music, which was written that way with a happy ending in mind.)

There is no more beautiful art form than the ballet. My mother was a professional ballet dancer in Paris during the German occupation of WW-II, and despite blackouts and curfews, nothing could stop her from training and getting to rehearsals. It takes that kind of commitment to achieve a goal. Mother passed in June this year at 96 and I will always be grateful for growing up with this music and knowing she lived out her dream of becoming a dancer in Paris.

Nobody ever put it more eloquently, 'ballet is the highest form of elegance'. Are you quoting someone or did that come from your own thoughts? Not that it matters, it's so apt! I'm an 18 stone, 62 yr old builder in my chunky check insulated shirt, and I actually sob quite a bit (every time!) with the intense beauty and elegance of it all, and no bit more so than the first waltz at the ball, around 1.06.00. To me, the music speaks of the purity and innocence of these six pretty young princesses, especially the sweetness and innocence of the little chirrups of flute or oboe(?). Just total, absolute elegance, and intensely beautiful!

This was my first time seeing that performance, and the 2 hours felt more like 2 minutes. This video made me realize, for the first time (I’m 17), the greatness of ballet. I always thought that if there was a question about storytelling combined with music, then the human voice (opera) was the way to go. But today, for the first time, I was introduced to the magic not of the human voice but of the human body. The way music combines with the body is like the soul itself revealing its substance. The feeling of that combination is almost divine, but at the same time it is very close to human emotion, and ultimately it succeeds in expressing so elegantly the essence of love and tragedy. I don’t think any other dancing form can even attempt to compete with ballet. It has a special purity to it as it dates back to an era when western civilization was, if not at its highest, certainly in a better state than today’s. This type of dance captures the beauty of life and defines what makes the human experience unique!

@ek5371 Thanks :-) That's a challenging question, but I'll do my best to answer it. Personally, I've always been drawn to German and Italian operas, although I do enjoy others as well. Taking that into consideration, here are a few of my personal top picks: 1. Mozart's "Die Zauberflöte" 2. Verdi's "Rigoletto" 3. Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro" 4. Mozart's "Don Giovanni" 5. Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" 6. Wagner's "Parsifal" 7. Verdi's "La traviata" 8. Bizet's "Carmen" 9. Puccini's "La bohème" 10. Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen" 11. Wagner's "Lohengrin" 12. Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" 13. Jules Massenet's "Thaïs" 14. Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" 15. Puccini's "Tosca" 16. Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" 17. Delibes' "Lakmé" 18. Donizetti's "L'Elisir d'Amore" 19. Mozart's "Così fan tutte" I'm sure I might have missed a few, but those are some of my all-time favorites. However, I'd also love to hear about your favorite operas and any titles you'd like to add to the list.

In 2014 I strolled down to the Met I wondered why so many people were streaming into the auditorium, there was a ballet performance. I noticed a woman holding a ticket for sale. Without asking what was on the program I purchased the ticket. To my surprise a fantastic prime seat. The curtain went up, was I in heaven? Swan Lake i was in tears, one of the highlights of my life.

All I have to say is that the two female soloists that did the first act pas des trois were absolutely bad ass. Swan Lake Pas des trois is notoriously difficult and they did it so beautifully. I agree, but the cultural context of that is really fascinating. You or I get what the dancers are saying-- there's all these dance storytelling conventions that we've been exposed to so long that it's obvious to us. I thought this language of dance was universal. Then, when I studied a little bharatanatyam-- Indian classical dance-- I realised that other cultures have really different storytelling conventions. To the Indian dancers it was so obvious what they were saying and what was being said, but to me it was literally like learning another language of movement. The same goes for music. It seems so universal to us that major is happy, minor is sad, etc... but fascinatingly that isn't always cross cultural. It even changes across time; Mozart's Queen of the Night aria sounds oddly sweet and pretty for a song about murder to us in modern times, but a listener of his period would have absolutely understood the musical conventions being used. Modern opera singers have to inject way more menace into their performances of that song, and their acting, to get the same point across. Really interesting stuff.

My daughter danced the role of Odette in 2001. Ballet is the only musical performance genre where you have to glean the story from the music and nuances of dance and movement. This is my favourite ballet of all time and its incredibly difficult to get right. It was the height of my daughters career after also performing in NutCracker. It was the culmination of 16 years of dance right through school and some weeks she put in 18 hours of practice. It was a journey she took me on and I never pushed her, just supported her. A year later she ruptured a disk in her spine in rehearsal and her career was over instantly. Now she is a senior executive in a major corportation. Its the most incredible character building experience you can give your child.

Not-Funny Comedian I expect you are lucky enough to be a very young person enjoying your youth, and just you keep doing that for as long as possible dear mate. A strange thing will happen to you when you're older if you're lucky, and this cavern of enormous depth will assail you. It deals with emotions so profound and moving that you really don't want them while you're enjoying your youth, but it really helps replace the lost frivolous fun of youth with something very enjoyable. This gives rise to such seemingly unlikely things as enjoying Tchaikovsky and other classics, and I hope when your time comes you get as much pleasure from it as I do.

I also have tickets for Russian State Ballet & Orchestra of Siberia at the theatre royal brighton which is a beautiful place to see Swan Lake & the tickets are cheap. Went last year and it was incredible. Also in Wimbledon again really nice theatre ..... not that I'm an addict :-)

There is definitely an element of excellence in Kirov (Russian) ballets. Swan Lake could not have been performed better than this. Everyone is in sync, controlled yet fluid and so very graceful. The acting is also first-rate. I also agree with the person who gave kudos to the dancer who is the "jester." He is amazing. Well, they all are. This performance was a joy to watch. And since I couldn't be there, I don't miss the live audience aspects...the clapping, coughing, sounds of toe shoes landing, etc. 😊 Thanks to who ever loaded it on KZfaq. 😊

I live not far from house where Tchaikovsky lived in Klin. He rent it. Now it is a museum. There is a small wooden table near the window where he wrote his music. And all kids in Klin loved him because he gave candies to them when went for a walk.

The first time I read that it as 'he gave the kids candles', and I imagined them arriving after dark and him helping them with lit candles ha ha ha. Seriously though, I would swap your being so close to Klin any day for my being a few doors away from Charles Dickens' house. To see the little table where Tchaikovsky, a sometimes tortured soul, would transfer his powerful and overwhelming emotions to paper in the form of intensely beautiful music is the epitome of joy. Lucky you Natalina!!!

Wow that's incredible Mieu thankyou for sharing that. So a small wooden table where he wrote his music and he was very kind. I adore Tchaikovsky as my dancing life was so intertwined with him. So he lived in Klin. It's been so hard not being able to dance with others during this challenging time but I love that you live near his home. If you visit it sometime close your eyes and tell him that he'd so well loved by me in Australia and he'll always be by my side❤️❤️❤️❤️ hey Mieu I hope your safe and your family during all of this pandemic

Trained in ballet for ten years myself. Still do it for exercise at age 58. Ballet is all about the beautiful lines the human body can make when the thighs are turned out and feet are pointed. I can't do big jumps anymore with any kind of assurance I'm not going to hurt myself, but I can do most of the rest of ballet movement, which is evidence that it's a great life long way to stay fit, and once you've learned it, you can do it in the privacy of your home. Helps to have a hardwood floor with at least a 12x12 space.

I quickly went from somewhat bored and disinterested, to in a trancelike state of being hypnotized by the movements and music... and then it was over in a grandiose flash. How delightfully trippy. We're in such a weird state of history where any sweaty poor man such as myself can partake in such beautiful media recordings and find value in it still, not quite out of curiosity but not quite familiarity either. That damned middlebrow.
